I worked for a builder [I am a retired gas engineer/plumber]. He insisted on tiling EVERYTHING, I told him time and time again not to use plywood as a bath panel then tile it later. His answer was “Good plumbers should not have issues” and if any issues popped up later on, I had to attend F.O.C to fix the issue.???? Time to part ways I thought 😡😡😡
Good Job Mark, I learnt as an apprentice Joiner years back all tiled bath panels had to have an access panel. I spent 4 months making them on a job as an apprentice. And tiling them too. Also learnt to plumb the bath in at same time, hot and cold and waste in solvent weld. Never looked back. I’d do everything the same in that video as you but I’d reconfigure the bath framework and tile it again before I left (accessible this time) don’t see the need to call a tiler, but that’s just me
When I was building my house, I made it a point to assume at one point there will be a pipe break or leak. When you think along those lines, you can have concealed plumbing but also think of access points (like an adjacent closet room shared wall with an access panel), and I built in catch basins drains under the rooms that have running water where a break might happen, a drain catches it. Lastly I planned during the build to have my plumbing run through bulkheads that had their own burst drains. My point is when you put lifelong servicing of systems as a top priority during the design phase or a remodel, you tend to create very durable systems.
Pop-up wastes are a bloody nuisance always have been and clicker wastes aren’t far behind. Can’t beat the good old plug and chain. Me, nooo, I’m not old fashioned at all even though I’m 74. I want practical things not fancy things. Keep it up Mark, you could always get a second job with the circus as a contortionist when it comes. I once was almost upside down while wiping a joint on a lead incoming mains. Oh for the good old days, I don’t think.
Agree 100%, design over substance most of the time. My mum was getting her shower room refurbed and wanted shot of the fancy waste thingy in the sink. Wanted a mixer tap and ordinary plug & waste. 'You don't get them any more' said a guy who came out to quote (from a largish local company.) He wasn't impressed when I showed him that very thing from Victoria Plumbing. Might be old fashioned but I'd prefer it any day over the modern stuff that, eventually, goes wrong.
Nothing wrong with pop up waste. All these old farts complaining about technology. Chain and plug never sealed well in my experienced and looked hideous, plus can be hazardous for young, thank goodness they've gone.
Thanks for that, Mark. Concealed plumbing always comes back to bite you sooner or later. Nice to see the house from the two bathroom job again. The first one of your vids I ever watched was the one where you were doing the soil pipe boss on that one.
I laugh my head off when I see bath's tiled in, like you said there's serviceable parts under there and customers just have no idea, but their faces when I tell them what will have to happen when something needs replacing is priceless. Thing is bathroom fitters are to blame for not telling the customers the problem with tiling baths
About a decade and a half ago, I was working on a timber-framed newbuiild and was asked to make a bath panel for tiling over (I'm a chippy). When I asked what fixing was needed (pushfit lugs? screw cups? mirror screws perhaps?) I was just told to screw it on. It was then tiled without any option for removal and the pipework hadn't even been tested. I was transferred to another site before the job finished and never went back there so I don't know the outcome, but I always thought they were crazy.
Don't you just love it when you come across a tiled bath panel . Not a lot you could have there Mark ..at least you fitted something that should cause less problems. 👍👍👍👍
Happy Christmas 🎄 Mark, Brilliant content this year looking forward to seeing it all again next year, “Real World Plumbing” is a brilliant way of summing up the plumbing game, 👍👍🤜🎄🤶
As part of my business, I offer call-outs and maintenance services. It's important to note that anything mechanical will wear out and stop working eventually. In domestic settings, access can be difficult, but we make it work by removing anything that's in the way, such as tiles or floors. However, commercial properties are much easier to work on. I've had two brand new bath wastes fail to seal. I believe some products are not fit for purpose, resulting in plumbers spending an excessive amount of time attempting to make a brand-new product work without leaking.
Hi Mark, another great jobbing film very enjoyable, yep I have come across the tiled bath panel scenario loads of times over the years. I always cringe when I see one because I hate causing any damage, obviously explanation given to the customer first. Also a nice little valve Change Job too and yes the bathrooms are both still looking very smart, well kept by the customer, always great to see with my ocd. Have a great week and as always take care, regards, Chris. 👍👍👍
Mark, have you/do you ever use paste on your joints? I never did until recently and now I'm converted. I didnt used to get leaks it just feels better now with the paste! Love your vids as its 90% the same work as I'm doing every day! Keep it up pal
Great and informative video again. Well done as always 👍👍. I notice the hoover was a bit noisy I’ve heard you can replace the bearings on them on internet lol 😉
I always used to tell customers that tiling your bath panel in is like welding your car bonnet shut, you are going to need to be under there at some point, and if you are going to do it, then leave some tiles under there for the future, so you don't have to re-tile your whole bathroom if you break any removing the panel and they have stopped making them.
Great work on the bath mark can’t beat the old plug and chain 😂 can’t understand why the person who tiled the bath onto plywood didn’t think about having some screws with caps on so you could lift the panel off. Sheer madness
Hiya Mark, Loving your videos. Could you tell me where to get one of those red water catchers that you used when you swapped the radiator valves. Thanks Paul
It’s because they see baths in hotels done like this but what they don’t realise is there are maintenance corridors / panels to access everything I’ve had customers fit huge sheets of granite down the side of a bath making everything impossible to get at They think we can fix leaks and replace taps using keyhole surgery
Had an issue with one of those bath plungers, the joint seemed to wear out and would then drip out. Replaced it with a traditional chain and plug after speaking to someone in the local plumbers merchants as they said they’ve seen this issue happen many times with these types of plugs.
Those pop up wastes are ridiculous (progress??) Was that your hair in the waste Mark ?? Haha. I’m a baldy, beardy too. That’s what years of plumbing does to a man !!!
An easy fix with tiled bath panels...just make an inspection panel that removes with mirror screws and neat square edge tile trim....looks great and easy for maintenance 😀
As a plumber and when a customer calls me and and says they have a leak under the bath or they want there bath taps changed, first thing I ask is “is the bath panel tiles” bloody nightmare. Tiling the bath panel shouldn’t even be a n option.
As a plumber myself I would refuse to not put in an access panel. I don’t fit those silly pop up bath wastes either, it’s almost inevitable within a year or so the customer would be calling me back as it has problems.
Hi Mark. Nice couple of easy jobs for you mate. I think they do an invisible fix for the Bath panels. If l 👍come across it I will let you, maybe you let your tiler know. Have a good week mate
Could still have a tiled bath panel. But set it up on a button fix system and it will pull off with glazer suction pads. And you can deal with any problems minimal effort.
Personally mark iam not a big fan of push up plugs(waste) had them on the past in my house end up replacing them and always best practices to leave a acces to your plumbing under your bath enjoyed the video.
New builds are the worst, showers fitted on top of floor boards with the only point of access is to cut the ceiling out underneath, and side mounted taps on the bath next to the wall !!
I'm a big fan of keeping things simple and original. I would have said to the customer "Look ere cocker, i'm going to put you in a normal plug and chain and you are having a plastic bath panel instead
I'd have thought it be common sense if something needs access then don't put a permanent fixture a top of it. To maintain an aesthetic finish like this surely tiling on to a removable panel would make a tonne more sense
These buckets ain’t stiff at all… perfect for draining rads… Also rocking up to a customers house and using bin bags to carry water out doesn’t give a great look imho
Really 🤣🤣🤦🏻♂️……….. You’ve watched the video, then gone out your way to note the time that I replaced the valve…..THEN took the time to type a comment asking that…….🙄….. Why….. what do you want to know for???

Well done Mark you managed it very well 👍🏼 I always advise Customers to do not tiles on panels 😊👍🏼♥️

Just love your videos Mark - real world plumbing indeed. I can't do what you do but I'm learning a lot - thanks.
Hi mark, good job.lets all go back to plug and chain save all the agro.
Hahaha sometimes I think the same
Awesome video, thank you.
Tiled bath panels do look nice, but accessibility is a pain. Bet it didn't take too long to sort out.
Thanks Mick…. Yep soon got it sorted
I use plumbers mate sealant, Which doesn't go off and works very well, every time...

'cause they get paid more to tile in a bath probably!

100% agree about the access, I also hate bath taps on the far side of the bath especially when it’s an outside wall

So how was someone going to get the hair out of the trap ?
With a hair slug
So there’s no need to change the olive when you change a radiator valve then.
Nope….. not always
Yea the plunger bit that allways sticks and customer phones saying its not popping back up 😭......
Yep🤣🤦🏻♂️

Doing a tiled bath panel today. Larger tiles so will silcone the one tile in and use as access panel if any leaks. 👍

Why don't installers fit an access panel
