  • WHAT IS CULTURAL HERITAGE? And how can we preserve our world heritage through Science?
Cultural heritage is comprised of tangible heritage, which includes natural heritage and intangible heritage. All the cultural heritage is very valuable to our world and society, and that's why it is very important to ensure the preservation of cultural heritage. Organizations such as UNESCO are actively working towards preserving our world's cultural heritage.
Heritage Science is the field that uses Science to help study objects and sites of cultural heritage and preserve our world heritage. Heritage Science can help with dating objects of cultural heritage relevance, with heritage conservation, heritage restoration, and with authenticating art objects.

When I was working in academia, in my research, I use different scientific methods to study precious objects of cultural heritage, such as ancient mummies and bones, paintings, and violins. One of my scientific research projects involves developing a scientific method to identify fake paintings. I love our world heritage and I want to share with the world fascinating cultural heritage stories through my videos, my blog, and my novels.

Hello Professor! I'm Yuree from CH Spring 2021. First of all, thank you for the wonderful video! I would say that my favorite cultural heritage site is Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, Turkey, which I first learned about while studying Art History a couple years back. I was captivated by the beautifully ornamented interior, with multiple windows on the central dome that floods the building with light, and the gold mosaics that allow for an ethereal feeling. It was also fascinating how it was constructed originally as a church but later was modified into a mosque, with minarets added on the four corners of the structure, and Arabic calligraphy on the inside. I'd love to visit the site in person and see for myself what it's like to be in such a heavenly place!

I've never been to Istanbul, but when I'll go, Hagia Sophia is first on my list of sites to visit there. I've been curious to see it ever since I've read Dan Brown's Inferno. I hope you'll get to visit it some day.

I love this video! Congrats on starting this new RUclips Channel. I really enjoy how you condense complex scientific concepts into simple, straightforward explanations, and I hope more people can find this channel soon! My favourite cultural heritage site is the Valley of the Kings in Egypt. I visited the 16th century BC archaeological site last Fall Break with my friends. From grand, complex chambers to detailed paintings and sculptures, I was amazed at the amount of time and effort, as well as technological advancements, that was used at the time to create such beautiful structures to honor their dead Kings and ensure their safe passage into the afterlife. Visiting the underground chambers and viewing their hieroglyphics also gave hints on the intangible heritage of the pharaohs. Their spirit of reverence towards Gods, and belief that their fate - from weather, catastrophe, to death, was very evident from their drawings and sculptures. In addition, their caste system and social norms associated with each caste was also prominently featured in their tombs. Advanced skills such as weaving, preservation of the human body, and cultural traditions are also intangible artifacts that one can see when visiting the archaeological site. Although it is a shame that much of the contents of the tombs have been removed and placed into museums (or stolen), it was still a breathtaking experience to walk in corridors built thousands of years ago by civilizations that still have legacy today.

Hello professor! I'm Mert from CH Spring 2021. Thank you for the informative content! My academic focus and personal interest have always been more on preserving intangible heritage, but I am very much excited to learn about heritage and preservation from a scientific point of view. My favorite cultural heritage sites would be the Residences of the Royal House of Savoy in Turin, Italy. It is a wonderful example of Baroque and Late Baroque art and architecture. I visited the Royal House during my J-term trip to Turin last year. The site is of special significance to me because it was after visiting the Royal House that I decided to minor in Art History and learn more about preservation. It was a shame that parts of the Royal House were damaged by the fire in 2008, but thanks to the reconstruction I witnessed during the visit, I started thinking about the importance of preserving tangible cultural heritage.

Hi Mert, that's great that you had the chance to visit the Royal House of Savoy in Turin during the J-term. And I'm happy to hear that seeing its reconstruction sparked your interst in the preservation of tangible heritage, and that you even decided to minor in Art History. Sometimes seeing places of cultural heritage can have a strong impact on u. For me, visiting Rapa Nui and seeing the moai is what got me into creative writing. I wanted to share with the world the beautiful island of Rapa Nui by exploring it through my novel. Both tangible heritage and intangible heritage are very important for us and we need to work on preserving both as there is so much to learn from all forms of heritage. Good luck with your studies!

Hello Professor! I am ChaeMin from CH Spring 2021. I would say that my favorite heritage site, as well as it being a heritage site that I would like to visit once all these COVID-19 situation ends, is the Acropolis of Athens, Greece. Always reading about the Greek Mythology comic book when I was little, I have always wanted to visit Greece when I would grow up. Having this interest, I came to interact with global UNESCO heritage sites during one of my research projects at high school. Knowing that the UNESCO's logo was based off of the Acropolis of Athens, my interest narrowed down to the Acropolis.

My favorite Cultural Heritage Site is the Badshahi Mosque in the Walled City of Lahore, Pakistan. It was constructed by the Mughal Emperor Jahanzeb in 1671 and took almost 2 years to complete. It is the largest mosque built during the Mughal-era and the 2nd largest in Pakistan even to this day. Looking at the mosque, this mosque is a perfect example of Mughal architecture and each corner of the mosque has a history of its own.

Hi Professor! I'm Fatema from CH Spring 2021. I really enjoyed watching the video and it was really informative in explaining the different 'categories' of heritage. I would say that my favorite cultural heritage site is the treasuries / treasure temple in Delphi, Greece. I visited Delphi during a J-Term trip last year and found the treasuries particularly interesting because of their financial and political importance. The temples are considered the treasure of the athenians, as they represent a history of warfare between the people of the same nation. It was fascinating to see how they were preserved in a way that ensured minimal reconstruction to their strong foundation.

Hi professor, this is such a great video! I would say that my favorite cultural heritage is Sarmizegetusa Regia, the capital of the former Dacian state before the Roman-Dacian wars. Apart from being a citadel, Sarmizegetusa Regia also included a sacred zone, with rectangular blocks arranged in a large circle. Some people say that the large circular sanctuary looks similar to the stone monument at Stonehenge in England. The remains of the citadel are located in Hunedoara, a county in western Romania. I had the chance to visit the place many times with my parents when I was younger and I can tell that it definitely looks amazing every season!

My favorite cultural heritage site has to be Xelhá in Quintana Roo, México. This used to be one of the biggest commercial ports of the Mayan empire. The name Xel-Há translates to "where the water is born". I visited here with my family a couple of years ago and absolutely fell in love with everything about this place. The ruins are beautiful in their own right but coupled with the panoramic views of the sea and the natural wells (cenotes) it results in a sight which I wish I could experience for the first time again. The ruins are not as well maintained as one would hope but that is no surprise after the destruction of the Aztec and Mayan sites at the hands of the Spanish and nowadays disrespectful tourists. However Xelhá remains my absolute favorite cultural heritage site.

Maria it’s me again :). Just wanted to say something - you mispronounce the word heritage, it really cuts the ear. Check out its pronunciation, it’s ‘dij at the end.

Thanks, Maria! Not being a native English speaker, there are some words that are more difficult to pronounce, one of them being "heritage". I'll do my best and hope the people enjoy the content of the videos. :)

Hi! Native speaker and English teacher here and wanted to point out that having an accent does not mean something is being mispronounced. In this case, Maria is using a more British pronunciation whereas you may be used to the American one. Hear examples here: dictionary.cambridge.org/pronunciation/english/heritage
Anyways, brilliant work on your educational RUclips videos! Really enjoying them :D
