I only got the student guide this year and not being told of any issues!!! We find that we have discussions my son comes to discuss what he’s reading!!! We add in TGTB language arts!!!

    This was super informative - thank you! I have a 9th grader, but he isn't as strong in formal writing assignments, such as the persuasive essay you showed. I'm working on getting those writing skills more solidified, so he will be better prepared for 10-12 grades. This year has kind of been a nightmare with writing assignments... he just isn't independent in that area, and he really dislikes writing.

    • @SevenInAll
      @SevenInAll  Год назад +1

      Writing can be a tough subject area for many students! It's a complex skill made up of many more fundamental skills, and it can take a while before a student is ready to do most parts of the process on their own. My sister is now in the stage where other than possibly some initial brainstorming or talking about the assignment...and then going over the assignment together when she turns it in...she can do it all independently. But that's definitely NOT where she started! I do have a video on the process I use to teach writing from middle school on up: ruclips.net/video/bboLksR-q90/видео.html
      And a video on what I look for during the process of going over a finished paper: ruclips.net/video/sEwOP7VlVpA/видео.html

      I'm glad the video has been helpful! We do own Sonlight 300...unfortunately, the edition we own is probably in the range of 15 years old, and Sonlight has made a lot of updates to their booklist over the years (many are still the same but there are also a fair number of updates), so I don't feel like the set that we have really gives an accurate picture of Sonlight's current 300 level. That one focuses on 20th Century World History...which, as we know, was an eventful and heavy century of history. I definitely think it's ideal to keep that one for 11th/12th grade as maturity of the student will help a lot with processing the historical events covered.

      @@SevenInAll Thank you for sharing about Level 300. I completely understand your reasons in not sharing about something that's been updated a great deal. I plan to use it with a 12th grader, and the heavier content is mostly why I've been searching for reviews. I'll probably preread, or read together the titles that are more mature/heavier. Thank you so much for your reply. I thoroughly enjoy your videos, and recently purchased the Elementary Exegesis to use next school year. Thank you for providing God honoring resources and content on your channel! Blessings...❤

    I would have a video request if ever you have the time: Why do we teach literature?
    Boys especially tend not to care for it. I think we do it because we want them to be well articulated and have a large vocabulary. But are those two necessarily related? Surely you can just practice making an argument.
    I would love to hear your thoughts on that.

    • @SevenInAll
      @SevenInAll  Год назад +2

      I would actually lean more toward saying that we teach literature because "story" itself is such an integral part of humanity. People throughout all ages have shared stories with one another, orally and now through the written word. Through understanding the shared cultural background of written "story" that humankind has created, we better understand who we are, who others are, and the connections and differences between us. And I think it's a little bit of an overgeneralization to say that boys tend not to care for literature...after all...many of the great works in the 'canon' of Western literature were written by boys who grew to be men. It's definitely an interesting topic to ponder!

    • @SevenInAll
      @SevenInAll  6 месяцев назад

      Yes, we've used levels 100-400, Government and Civics is 400, I believe. Our editions were all purchased a LONG time ago (back when I was in high school, ha!) and used over and over for kids #1-#7 so for the most part I haven't felt that it does justice to Sonlight to review their curriculum when they've made so many updates in the years since (for this level, my mom bought the new IGs and just a couple new books to update the level she owned). Looking over the level 400 booklist...it has so many interesting titles I'd be interested to re-read or read for the first time since they are newly added since I did the course.

    Wondering if this is geared towards 9th or 10th grade? I am just looking into Sonlight primarily for Literature/Language Arts as I move into the high school years next year & considering this company, but there are so many levels in Sonlight for high school…6 I believe? But thank you for this detailed video!! 😊

    • @SevenInAll
      @SevenInAll  10 месяцев назад +1

      Yes, there are more levels of Sonlight available than you can actually do in 4 years of high school...you can pick the topics/themes that are most relevant to your student's needs. Sonlight's Level 200 is recommended for ages 14-17--all of the cores are age-adaptable...I'd probably lean more towards using this one for a 10th grader vs. a 9th grader.

    How does Sonlight teach grammar and punctuation? I want to add that to my rising 6th grader, but haven’t found anything I’m thrilled with.

    • @SevenInAll
      @SevenInAll  Год назад +2

      Sonlight doesn't have any grammar and punctuation at the high school levels....and unfortunately, it's been too long since we've used Sonlight's LA for me to really know how they approach it with the upper elementary/middle school levels--they have made a lot of updates in the last 15 years. I usually lean toward a worksheet approach for grammar and punctuation myself, as I think it's the sort of skill that works well with worksheets. Winston Grammar is a favorite of mine for learning parts of speech and they also have an advanced level although I can't at the moment remember what all is in that....I'm not generally a fan of Abeka, but their LA punctuation and grammar workbooks are very thorough and effective (not so much for writing skills, but for those little nitty-gritty things, they do a good job).

    • @homeschool.pray.repeat
      @homeschool.pray.repeat Год назад

      @@SevenInAll thanks!! We’re reading Ambleside Online books right now. My oldest needs a little guidance with grammar and punctuation for his written narrations and free writes. I actually wondered if just an Abeka work book would suffice. Especially since I don’t need the writing element, and since I heard they are strong on grammar. I’ve looked at other worksheets and they’re just all boring, lol. Anything I have found outside of worksheets includes more than I need. I never anticipated getting hung up on grammar and mechanics. You probably said this and I missed it, but how long would you say the Sonlight part of your sister’s school time takes?
    Also, are the middle school levels also independent for the student or just high school? We’ve only gotten to Level C, but are changing to Notgrass for American History instead of Levels D/E since we’re having a baby this Summer and I’m not sure I have the time needed to read aloud as much as is needed.

      Aww man not to change your mind but D is amazing. All my kids 2-13 listen in and beg for the next book. We can do a weeks worth of reading in a day or two. And I have found several of the books like Johnny Tremain on Hoopla Audio. It’s been a really amazing level, Im the adult and can’t wait to start E 💗 What a blessing to have a sweet new baby!

    • @SevenInAll

      Sonlight tends to be the curriculum that she most likely works on on the weekend or in off-school hours...so it's a little hard to say exactly how long it takes (especially including the writing, because she tends to write on weekends). I guess I would say the reading part is probably about an hour-ish a day for her? Maybe a little more? The middle school levels are NOT designed to be independent...however...that doesn't necessarily mean that they can't be done independently. It depends on the kids, how much they like reading themselves. My middle school sister is actually doing an older version of Sonlight D+E right now, mostly independently (she reads all the books to herself, and and the end of the day narrates/discusses what she read with Mom). That's not how it's designed to be used, but that's what works for our family right now.

    • @jerilyn-ourhomeschooltable

      @@SevenInAll I thought about doing that in a couple years. Just taking a pause while I have a baby and toddler and then picking back up with D/E when she’s on the older end and can read it more on her own. My daughter is a voracious reader so I don’t think it’d be a big stretch even for next year, but I’m just not sure. 😊 She would have to be on board with knowing she’d be more on her own.

      @@LearningPlantingGrowing 😊 I appreciate the feedback. When we started Sonlight three years ago I was so looking forward to D/E, so it’s been a hard choice to think about changing. Funny enough, I was going to use several Level D titles to have her do as Readers because it matches so well with Notgrass American history. Seems like I should just do Level D and then utilize audio when possible. 👍🏻 I’m definitely going to have to talk with my daughter and see what she’s willing/wants to do. She absolutely loves History and all the books.
