    An engineered septic system is a more advanced type of septic system designed to effectively treat and disperse wastewater in challenging conditions, such as the rocky, decomposed granite soils we have here in Teller and Park counties.
    Primary Treatment - Septic Tank:
    Wastewater from the home flows into the septic tank.
    In the tank, solids settle to the bottom, forming a layer of sludge. Fats, oils, and grease float to the top, forming a layer of scum.
    The clarified liquid (effluent) in the middle layer is what will move on to the next treatment step.
    Pump Chamber:
    After the septic tank, the effluent flows into a pump chamber.
    This chamber houses a pump and related controls. The pump is used to dose the effluent to the sand bed leach in approx. 125-gallon intervals, ensuring even distribution and controlled percolation.
    Sand Bed Leach Field:
    The effluent is pumped from the pump chamber to the leach field, which is comprised of Quick4 Infiltrators atop a 3' sand bed. The sand bed is a constructed area filled with a specific grade of sand that aids in the filtration and treatment of the effluent. The sand acts as a secondary filter, removing smaller particles and providing additional treatment of the wastewater.
    Infiltrators:
    Infiltrators can be thought of as modern replacements for the traditional perforated pipe and stone systems. They are dome-shaped modular plastic chambers that provide a space for effluent storage and facilitate its distribution and absorption into the surrounding soil.
    Final Filtration and Percolation:
    As the effluent moves down through the sand and into the native soil, harmful bacteria and pathogens are further reduced, and the water is cleaned before it eventually reaches the groundwater or dissipates through the soil.
    The primary advantage of engineered septic systems like this is that they can achieve a higher level of treatment and are better suited for the rocky soils we encounter here in Colorado. Regular maintenance, including periodic pumping of the septic tank and checks on the pump and other system components, is crucial for ensuring the system's longevity and proper functioning.
