Perhaps Phil could learn it again here... In an interview a long while back, he said he couldn't remember how to play it. I've speculated that after so much time working closely with Tony Banks, whose focus when song writing is with chord structure and melody that he'd automatically gain a significant chord awareness. I think it rubbed off, and this is one of the beautiful results. The man is a marvel. He is one of the greatest drummers... living or dead, and a good singer. He has excellent pitch proven by the overdubbed multiple vocal parts on Genesis' Entangled... I'll be crushed when he passes on. He's got two musician sons, Simon, and Nic. Both smoke on the drums, and Simon sounds just like Phil vocally. Ok, I've said enough.
It’s making me feel old that they didn’t know it was written for a movie called: Against All Odds and the song was nominated for Academy Award. It really should have won. The movie wasn’t good at all.
You're a wonderful teacher. Thanks for all the time and effort you put into making this tutorial. Look forward to learning this beautiful classic. Greetings from New Zealand.
I’ve always loved this song. Thanks again Pierre. Your style of teaching works well with my style of learning. LOL I appreciate your steady, precise method.
Yes yes yes! Great tutorial and easy to follow, rewind, stop, practice, and learn it in small chunks. More Phil please...he's got so many good piano licks.
Started piano late July 2024. Experience players said to do it again, they'd just focus on songs. Thanks to Pierre's phenomenal 📹 & teaching style,I've learned songs from artists i ❤️ & never thought I'd be good enough to play. Very grateful Pierre.
Heyyy Pierre !! Beautiful song!! Huge fan of Phil Collins and Genesis!! Great tutorial!! 🎶🎶😃 one of my favourite drummers and I like how he plays the piano/ keyboard!!
That second chord of the chorus is one of my favorites in any song! I suppose one must have a mind gloriously free of music theory student baggage in order to put the 11th in the bass of a dominant chord. 😁 Great tutorial as always! 🙌
Same with the Cm7 in the verse…standard music theory would dictate the VII should be half diminished. Same with the second chord of The Beatles’ Yesterday…Paul obviously wasn’t distracted by theory limitations either!
Oh, if I'd have access to this walkthru back when I was 12, it would have saved me so much time and and struggle in front of the family piano. Great to know exactly which chords there are...
PP, Many thanks for another well assembled tutorial. As much as I love the "lift" that adding supertonic Maj2 gives I feel like it introduces additional common tones that create a bit of ambiguity in the actual harmonic motion. There are a ton of common tones in this progression to begin with and I will likely leave it as is. Just my .02 Thanks! -CC
Awesome vid/tutorial as always! Chord 2 in each the verse and in the chorus are the most interesting imo... esp the former, completely unexpected! Both also use the flat five.
We recently went to see the Alamo There is a Phil Collins collection of memorabilia there He was fascinated with Davy Crockett since childhood Worth a trip to see!
I have somewhat figured out this song by ear before, but your video helped me to get the inversions and some of the nuances more correctly. Thank you so much! Though, I could never resist and had to play a Db major after the outro, haha!
Nice, dude! I am no way a good pianist, but I taught myself how to play this from the sheet music and from listening to the song when it was a hit back in the day. It’s a great song.
Great lesson as always!😃 when the chords are inverted in addition to having the bass in the left hand, I find it tricky to remember the logic or the "pattern" of the chords, so that I can remember them better. Do you have any tips?
Thx Pierre I really like the way you teach it. I hope one day you do a tutorial of Michael Bolton - how am I supose to live without you 🤞 anyway thx for all your efforts 👍
Another Awesome Tutorial, my wife got us front row center tickets for Phil and and to this day the best concert I’ve been to, I’ve wanted to learn this song, Thanks Pierre 👍
Thanks, yes I’ll definitely do that! In this video and most others, it’s the Garritan CFX Yamaha plugin with the “Famous E Electric Piano” by Orangetree samples layered. Tiny bit of Space Designer reverb and that’s it!
Hi Pierre. I just discovered your channel and I am enjoying it a lot. You are engaging and to the point which is always a good thing when it comes to tutorials and explanations. Some songs that come to mind I would love you to teach are Take the Long Way Home by Supertramp, The End of Innocence by Don Henley, Keep On Loving You by REO Speedwagon, I'm In You by Peter Frampton and Desperado by The Eagles.
He did play the piano with this song live at the famous Live Aid Concert. He makes a mistake right at the start and I feel his pain every single time!!!
I actually wasn't using any sheet music. I've considered publishing my own versions of sheet music, but have found that the overwhelming majority of people who teach for a tutorial on RUclips are doing so because they can't read.

Phil Collins. Whatever ur opinion of him I think it is incontestable that he was a very talented songwriter.
I think he's incredible!
Agreed!!! Very talented!! 🎶😃
Drummer too.
Even more so!
Phil Collins is one of the best singer-songwritera (drummers) of all time.
Excellent job Pierre! Your tutorials are my favorite.
🙏🏻❤️
As a teen, this was played on MTV regularly and it always ripped my heart out
Fun Fact: This tune took it's name from the first movie it was in, Against All Odds (1984).
It’s making me feel old that they didn’t know it was written for a movie called: Against All Odds and the song was nominated for Academy Award. It really should have won. The movie wasn’t good at all.
😂😂😂 I see what you did there.
I love Phil. I am a drummer so Phil is my drumming hero
if you like drummers - check out Mick Tucker ( of Sweet ) if you haven't already

Even this guitar player of 43 years may be able to pick this one up...Thanks for posting a great lesson.
Yes been wanting this one. Thank you.

It’s the limitations that make the artist!

Fantastic lesson and so easy to follow !
Great tutorial, I’ve been wanting to learn this for a while, thank you!
"and I'm holding the pedal as you can see, because it's a ballad". That's great!
Haha I read this at the same moment in the video.
Ha! Not my most articulate moment or reason for pedaling, but I got the point across, I guess 😆
@@pierrejpiscitelli 😄
Well done. Clear and to the point. You’re very good at this.
🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Very good Tutorial. It took me about 1 hour (watching & practice) now I love to Play it.
Thanx so much! 🤘🏻
Good job, Phil Collins' creative genius shines through💙
Great job.Thank you😊
Good job Man right
I really appreciate your tutorials. Very easy to follow even for a bang average intermediate player like me. Thanks!
Oh, if I'd have access to this walkthru back when I was 12, it would have saved me so much time and and struggle in front of the family piano. Great to know exactly which chords there are...
That was only the first time I will watch this video. Saved.
I appreciate you for this

Just an awesome lesson and insight , thanks
Great tutorial!! i don't touch a keyboard 5 years ago, this video makes me want to go to get one and return to practice!❤🎹
I have somewhat figured out this song by ear before, but your video helped me to get the inversions and some of the nuances more correctly. Thank you so much! Though, I could never resist and had to play a Db major after the outro, haha!

Very helpful.
Excellent channel & tutorials Pierre ! I've been wanting a good tutorial on this and 'Your Song' by EJ and you've done both - thank you ! 🎹😊
Thanks!!
You are a great teacher :)
🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
It took me 2 days but i learned it, thank you dude!
Awesome!!
I went to ''base 2'' thanks to your tutorials 😄
Great lesson as always!😃 when the chords are inverted in addition to having the bass in the left hand, I find it tricky to remember the logic or the "pattern" of the chords, so that I can remember them better. Do you have any tips?
How did you get that sound?
Thanks!
Thanks!!
I use the Garritan Yamaha CFX Plugin and the Famous E Electric Piano plugin.
Thx Pierre I really like the way you teach it. I hope one day you do a tutorial of Michael Bolton - how am I supose to live without you 🤞 anyway thx for all your efforts 👍
Agaon...great tutorial...thanx man Mr.Gregg
Again...sorry
That intro is so cool. I’m going to visit my local music store and casually play it on one of their keyboards :)
Another Awesome Tutorial, my wife got us front row center tickets for Phil and and to this day the best concert I’ve been to, I’ve wanted to learn this song, Thanks Pierre 👍
Great video as usual! Would it be possible to show how you get the sounds you use also?
Thanks, yes I’ll definitely do that! In this video and most others, it’s the Garritan CFX Yamaha plugin with the “Famous E Electric Piano” by Orangetree samples layered. Tiny bit of Space Designer reverb and that’s it!
Yes, please!😊
Super lesson Pierre, any chance in the future of you showing us “Holding back the years by Simply Red” ❤
This was great! Do you have a chord chart associated with this for download?
Yes, please!

Thanks you're the best, could you play all the song in an other video ? Sorry for my english... iam french 😅
Thanks
Great video. Fantastic chord progression. Isn’t that second section really a bridge and this song a “verse/refrain” form or AABA?
Just read that Phil didn't play piano on this song but it was Rob Mounsey. Phil did play drums, naturally.
That’s right. But live, Phil did show off his piano chops several times! He was pretty good.
He did play the piano with this song live at the famous Live Aid Concert. He makes a mistake right at the start and I feel his pain every single time!!!
When "Do you remember?" or Genesis "In too deep"? Just to mention a few... Thank you
Yes, please.
He reminds me of Mike Myers in one of his comedies
🤣
@@pierrejpiscitelli I really appreciate the careful instructions on the tutorial. Thank you 🙏
Could you do a tutorial on Kate Bush “Wuthering Heights”
I just subscribed. I love this song. Do you have sheet music available for this arrangement
Stay tuned, may create some in the future!
@@pierrejpiscitelli fingers crossed!
Good By Stranger - SuperTramp
I’m sorry for the second message but I forgot to ask if you would ever do Ambrosia’s “You’re The Biggest Part Of Me?”
Love that song!! Stay tuned…
what model keyboard would you recommend for beginners
I love the Yamaha P - series 88 key keyboards. Depends on budget and how much space you have!
Love this song. Can you teach it with the melody on top?
What setting is that on the digital piano? Honky tonk? It's not Rhodes I don't think. Thanks!
I’m mixing a Rhodes and Acoustic piano together.
@@pierrejpiscitelli cool. Forgive my newbie question, how are 2 (Rhodes and acoustic) stubs mixed together?
40 years ago, well that's not depressing at all is 😞
Where is the sheet music for this lesson?
I actually wasn't using any sheet music. I've considered publishing my own versions of sheet music, but have found that the overwhelming majority of people who teach for a tutorial on RUclips are doing so because they can't read.
I am a beginner. I am not sure if i can follow this tutorial.
I would choose an easier song. I have close to 100 others, many of which are easier!
Is the Yamaha DX7 sold as a synthesizer?
What is the approx cost?
Hmmm.. difficult chords
Excellent tutorial. It's about time someone covered this!
