I just came across it and I must say I'm impressed. the sound quality of the percussion, piano, violin, and even the guitar holds up to modern standards. the old techno elements have aged perfectly, promoting the dystopian/existential/robotic aesthetic. I've listened to a lot of electronic music, so I'd like to emphasize, I rarely hear distortion sounds (or 'filler') as unique as the first minute or 2:39 the truly great part of this song is its structure. It takes it's time to introduce its elements. giving each sound a turn in the spotlight. the first 30 seconds plays around with ambient noise, distortion sounds, that plucky techno loop, and the percussion. playing snippets or shorts patterns individually while making them overlap in an order that raises tension. at 30 seconds as the vocaloid (voice synthesizer) starts to sing, we're hit with a pause that releases (or heightens) the tension built up before. as the piece blows over from sample showcase to song. familiar elements get exerted further, playing simultaneously, while new distortion sounds and single notes on the guitar, piano, and violins are played, subtly foreshadowing their presence in the song as we approach the 1:00 mark. With most of the elements introduced, the song shifts gears, focusing on supporting the vocals, i won't say much about the rest but something to notice is that it is 5 minutes long (average song would be 3-4minutes) yet it doesn't have a reoccurring 'chorus'. each part of the song has it's own melody or pacing, some parts may sound similar but they are all different. the song progresses, it changes and never goes back, reflecting on the moral of the song. The idea of using numbers to represent the lyrics in the video is a cool original idea. (i still haven't figured out how it works, please enlighten me if you have.) I haven't seen many videos from 2010, but these visuals seem to be way ahead of their time. these are all pretty high level 0:131:181:582:503:44 and these two sequences are especially great in my eyes 1:332:45. it's great how the visual style changes go along with each musical style change. in the intro and outro, the distortion of words is used effectively and appropriately with the distortion sounds. I feel the visuals at 3:52 are appropriate, as it gives me a feeling of falling or diving into someone's mind. the lyrics presenting the idea of changing the color of your personality/mind to be liked more by others, and the idea of finding your true color/achieving your ideal color. the other scenes are much darker in general possibly depicting the confusion or uncertainty of the singer as she tries to figure out what color she should be.
