- Pope John Paul II visited Yad Vashem on March 23, 2000. During this historic visit, the Pope participated in a memorial ceremony in Yad Vashem's Hall of Remembrance. This clip shows the Pope meeting Holocaust survivors during the ceremony.

When His Holiness, Pope John Paul II shook hands with Edith Zierer (the one whom he brought to the train station for help when she was a little girl) my eyes misted a little. Such a moving and beautiful moment. I cannot begin to fathom how Ms. Zierer felt upon being reunited with the man who saved her life so many years prior. He was such an incredible, inspirational man. When he died in 2005 the Catholic Church not only lost a phenomenal Pope, but the entire world lost a phenomenal human being.
So moving! The narrator is talking about one of the women survivors who, as a child, was carried to the train station following her liberation by a young Polish priest who would become Pope John Paul II and now she is meeting him again! Amazing. RIP John Paul and long live Israel.
I don't know Pope John Paul ii's history, and I don't really care. During times of war, it is human to do what you have to in order to survive.
I'm not Catholic, I'm not even religeous, but I was a fan of John Paul ii. I remember that whenever Pope John Paul ii got off of a plane, he always kissed the ground, (a very humble jesture IMO) and he always had the most scerene, warm and contented smile I have ever seen on anyone.
Pope John the 2nd should have been awarded the highest honor from Israel. What this one man did for the jews during ww2 was amazing. And like others who have commented the world lost a great human being. We should light a yurziet (bad spelling) for him on the anniversary of his passing.
JP2 was an excellent leader of Christendom and of our Catholic Church...he will always be missed and remembered
He was a great person.I am a protestant but i love pope john paul 2.Imagine a priest carrying a jew woman to survivors camp and meeting her again after years.

Both Jews and Christians got the same roots in faith; wrongly antagonized during the course of history; my native Poland is best example of that. In XVI c. after Warsaw Confederation(1573) Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth gave best example and start of religious tolerance for Europe with wast Jewish community incorporated which became vital part of Polish community and culture. JPII is the very best son of that tradition and I will pray for all people of good will to stand together in God's PEACE!

I agree with you so much. We are all children of the same loving God. I hope Christians and Jewish people can find more ways to be united rather then divided. What the Church did in the past is horrible, but what we can do together in the future will be wonderful.

To Elibouscher: my grandfather is one of the Rightous Among The Nations (see: Chasid Umot Ha-Olam). Sad to read your comment. More than 30% of all medals given in the world belong to Polish people. Everyone from my country who did kill any of them was and is our enemy too.
Check the list of all Rightous from Poland (Yad Vashem, what was Zegota during Warsaw Ghetto Rising and find out at least who's Wladyslaw Bartoszewski.I don't know any anti-Semites from my country yet.

im not really a jew, but i respect all religions, and what the nazi,s did to the jew's in WWII was a disgrace!! i have studied WWII, mostly about what thoughs nazi's did to all thoughs inoccent people.
pope john paul II i belive was in a nazi camp, but im not sure it wasn't clear on that, but he show so much comassion to thoughs who have suffered in WWII and it also shows that this man was a true man of god and he knew exactie new what to do!!

You have never learned history didnt you? Warsaw in Poland was a nazi nightmare, fights and upraising all the time, comparing to france or netherlands that capituled straight away

Does the sin of mankind change the teachings of faith? You can't condemn a faith nor the worshipers that follow that faith for the actions of people who committed atrocites. By doing so then you become no better than the nazis. Keep in mind that an individual should be judged by the content of his character and not by his or her religious beliefs or race.
