This presentation was an Extremely well written, thoughtful and exemplary tribute to the late, great Mr. Blatty and to this most humanitarian and brilliant of all his works.
I appreciate your analysis of this unique and powerful film. A favorite of mine and my (now deceased) best friend since we discovered it as high school sophomores in 1980, we spent hundreds of hours discussing the dialogue, character dynamics, and philosophies of Blatty’s masterful work. It’s refreshing to hear a kindred perspective and appreciation of this underappreciated masterpiece. Thanks.
"Most radically, however, this (1985, New World, 117 minute, 37 second) version also crucially transmutes a final act of suicide, whose potentially sinful overtones long troubled the writer-director, into one of unambiguous self-sacrifice. By removing a single shot of a knife falling from Kane's grasp which existed in all other versions, and having Stacy Keach revoice Kane's parting words to Cutshaw, Blatty finally achieves a conclusion which reconciles his dramatic and religious concerns." - Mark Kermode
Love this f***ing movie. Every time I repeat-watch it I see something in it I hadn’t before. Keach, Wilson, Miller, all of them are brilliant in it. W.P.B.’s best. Yes I like it better than “The Exorcist” and realize it’s conceptually related. This whole story is the stuff of genius borne of that fugue-state between reality and fantasy. I agree with the reviewer that the religious overtones are a part, not a feature, of the point there that transcends any faith.
not just conceptually related. Captain cutshaw encountered reagan o'neil, and was told "you're gonna die up there!" Reno (jason miller) may be, if you account for his return in exorcist 3, may be Legion, and father Karras. following the one connection made. According to the gemini killer, Karras would be alive, but recovering. 'Reno' winds up back in a georgetown asylum for exorcist 3
This is the second movie in the blattys trilogy of Faith in god that take place in the same universe : 1. The Exorcist- How to overcome with faith 2. Ninth Configuration - trying to figure if God exist 3. Legion/Exorcist 3- Skeptic turned faith
@@crimestick6648 The Astronaut that Reagan tells "Your going to die up there" is in The Ninth configuration. This interaction is what plants the fear of space in him.
I thought the book was much better. Blatty’s inexperience working with actors and and a camera really showed in this film. It’s a cool movie, but didn’t move me like the book did.

This video essay deserves much more attention. Well done!
Great analysis of an underrated film masterpiece. This film is pure genius, from William Peter Blatty, a truly brilliant writer!
A great movie which presents the viewer with a hard question. I wish more of Blatty's humor made it into The Exorcist.
i'm glad that it didn't.
it made it into exorcist 3. some great, great dialogue, and funny moments
One of my favorite movies. Raises the question of the existence of God.
One of my favorite movies...like ever
Great review . Ed flanders is great in his role

That was an honorable acceptance speech not like Will Smith
