Hi there! These are amazing questions, and I really want to dial into them with you, but I’m going to be away from that computer until this weekend. Could you please reply to me on Saturday?
It’s probably about 6 feet of usb cable in my case, but if you brought a laptop on a stand it’d be closer. I’m not noticing any more latency than using cables in general, but you may need to watch buffer size and sample rate.
I have a Roland TD07KV and have purchased Counterkit as my midi pack. I use Reaper and have the appropriate driver for my kit installed. Reaper picks ups my kit, reads the midi but doesn't playback anything can you advise? I'm frustrated trying to figure this one out
@@nicmcwhirter so I’m not familiar with that drum plug-in, but I’d imagine you’re gonna need to find the midi mapping settings for your kit in the plug-in so that it knows to play the correct sample on the correct hit.
Good tutorial, I'm looking for specifically using the VH11 hats with the hi-hat stand for recording open/closed hats and I don't think there's a tutorial that exists for that. Time to just mic up some acoustic drums I guess? I just wanna use my TD17KVX for drum demos, but not being able to record open/closed hat notes as I play them makes me wanna just mic up an acoustic lol
I can’t say I’ve played with those models, so best I could do would be to point you to the hardware’s documentation. As an aside though, I’m a big proponent of: electronic shells, acoustic cymbals.
@@CoreyAllgood All the goodies of fine-tuned shell sounds without the guess-work and some nice cymbals, I get you! Tuning drums is the worst part of playing drums haha
Hi!, i have an Alesis Surge kit, a huawei d14 laptop, Reaper as a DAW, and both SSD5, and ezdrummer3. it takes me a while to connect all the stuff and make it work, but somethow when it works, 9-10 times the drums will stop transmiting to reaper after a moment, sometimes its less than a minute, sometimes it works for 5 mins or so. i had it connected to a usb2.0 port, changed it to a 3.0 port and it works a little better. One more thing, when it stops sending the signal to reaper, in order to make it work again , i have to close reaper, turn off/on my drum module and usually that makes itwork for a brief moment. any thoughts??
Any tips on how to use 2 modules at the same time? I have a td12 and expanded using a td10 to create a larger kit. Can both be used in a software like ezdrummer 3 so that I can midi out all of the drums and cymbals as 1 kit? Never worked with a computer hooked up to my kit and just wanted some feedback before I invest in the equipment/software to do so. Thanks
You know, that’s not something I’ve tested before. I can say if you’re not using a separate interface, it’s almost definitely a no if you’re on a windows machine because ASIO usually gets priority to a single device. But if you’re using a separate interface like I was in this video and running two modules in via usb or midi cable, I have no idea if it will work. Unfortunately I don’t have a second module to test with, either.
Hey bro. I followed ypur advice. My reaper detected my lemon module. I can record. But when i try to check how it sounded, when i hit play in the mixer i dont hear a thing.
This is awesome man! Quick question on latency…..I have my TD07 plugged into my laptop via USB(bypassing my 2i2 interface). In EZ Drummer 3 I’m having some pretty bad lag/latency. Sample rate is fairly low(10 seconds) and driver is up to date. Any ideas what else it could be?
If the sound is going out of the speakers on the interface, then it’s not completely bypassing the interface. My guess is that either in the module or the interface, you’re gonna want to take the buffer size down. I like to start at a 64 buffer size for live recording, and crank to 2048 for mixing.
I have the TD-27 as well, and when I try to record, it says offline where the notes should be and will not play back any audio. Do you know what I might be doing wrong? Thank you.
Typically when I see “offline,” it means I’m tabbed into another program. There could be a lot of reasons. Go through the checklist: 1. Are drivers installed 2. Is your reaper set up using an ASIO system, and do you have an interface or your module selected as the subsystem? 3. Is the midi device enabled? 4. Do you have your drum plugin on and midi mapped for your module?
@@CoreyAllgood the drivers are installed, I'm not sure how to check #2, the midi device is enabled, and for #4 I'm not sure what I have to do for that, i just plugged in the module through the USB.
Not sure if someone asked, but how do you go about mapping the kit. I have my kit all jumbled up, the toms sound like cymbals and so on 😂 anyways l, great video, and any recommendations will be greatly appreciated 🤘🏼
There’s usually presets for mappings in the plug-in software. I showed how to do it in superior drummer, but other software has its own system for mapping.
Hi Corey. My edrums easily connect & play within superior drummer 3 (standalone), however I am unable to connect the edrums to superior drummer within Reaper when inserting new fx track. SD loads fine within reaper but edrums are not connected. Midi device (edrum) is enabled also. And Channels set to Any.
@@CoreyAllgood thanks for the reply. I got it running. I used "Insert ^virtual instrument in new track" opposed to what I originally was doing 'Insert new track' & then fx sd.
Hey I wonder if you can help or point me in the right direction. I got a roland td-6v kit that's been packed away forever.. got it connected to ugritone in reaper. How do I get into assigning say the ride and it's bell to the cymbal pad? I'll have a crash sometimes bleed in on a tom when hitting rim of pad too. The kit could be trash too since I've had it for 17yrs, just learned the hh control pedal is junk
Hey! So I don’t have a whole lot of experience with the Ugritone drums, but if they’re anything like toon track, there should be a midi mapping setting in the interface somewhere. I’d say look for that and find where it’s at. There may be a mapping for your module, but if not, you can find out what midi note it’s assigned to and map it to the proper sound.
I'm having a problem with my Alesis Surge module and the Reaper DAW. I can connect the module to my laptop, start Reaper, get it all set up with the VST drum plugin/settings.......I get a signal from the kit going into the DAW but the signal cuts out maybe 30 seconds of the module being connected with the VST. At that point, there is no response from the pads of the kit. What technical problem is this and how can I solve it?
Hey there! I haven’t run into that specific issue personally. While I could definitely try and troubleshoot with you, it would probably be faster and less of a headache if you reached out to Alesia’s support, as they have probably fixed this issue a million times. I know that’s kind of a non-answer and I’m sorry for it, but I do think their support would probably be more helpful than I in this specific instance.
@@CoreyAllgood yes, but I managed to find the problem thanks for answering anyway... only problem is that my superior drummer 3 isn't making any sound except for some snare or cymbals in different kit, so I'm downloading my core library again rn
I have a td17kvx with reaper and Stephen slate drums. I cant get cymbal grabs to work. Any ideas? Also how do you prevent hearing drum module sounds over top ssd? Im hearing both. Also, do you have to put the td17 module in vendor mode?
Alright, couple of questions here. 1. I’ll have to play around with SSD and a cymbal choke. I haven’t tried that, so I don’t have a definitive answer there. Give me some time. 2. The mixed sounds is tricky. Are you listening to audio on your module through headphones, Basically using the module as an interface? If so, I think that there’s probably a module setting I haven’t found yet. If you’re on a separate interface, you’ll need to make sure that only the midi is armed and not the audio. 3. Yeah, I did have to mode my td27 into vendor mode, and I think I forgot that step in this video. I really need to make a better version of this video.
Alright, I found the part for the chokes. If you look in SSD, there’s a “map” tab. You’ll need to find the cymbal you want and find it’s corresponding choke note, then assign it to the proper note for the choke pad on your cymbal, and make sure to map it to the proper choke note in SSD. Unfortunately the drum presets that came with SSD for me don’t have a td27 preset, so I just loaded the td30 preset and it seemed to pick up most of the right notes and I was able to do a choke no problem.
And I found out how to turn the Roland samples off and just get midi. You need to disable local control. The setting may be in a different place for you, but on my module I hit “system->midi” then I scrolled down to “local control” and turned it off. Boom, only SSD through my headphones.
@@CoreyAllgood do you get any latency issues? I have a track my buddy sent me that I want to write drums for. He wants to take the midi and apply different effects and drum samples. I'm new to all of this.
@@theradiantchild that is very dependent upon the setup. I use an audio interface, so there’s far less latency than there would be just running through the PC speakers. If you don’t have an interface but are having latency issues, you could try using the module as the interface and using headphones on your module. There’s a bit more of a setup for that.
I have a roland td27 and I want to record via usb with a console sound card on the laptop (windows), what cables should I connect specifically and where if I have the sound card? you can help me; thanks
That’s an interesting way to go. I’d really recommend sending the audio over usb from the module into your laptop, so you’d record through your module as an interface, and then using the sound card for any mixing touch ups later if you’re gonna go the sound card route, but if you insist on going the sound card route, you could probably do a stereo Y cable from the two audio outputs of your module (1/4”) to your line in (1/8”). Unfortunately, traditional sound cards aren’t really the best for modern recording setups.
Thanks to this video I was finally able to get some sound from my kit into reaper (god finally). However, I started playing using SSD5 as my VST and I noticed that some of the notes I play sound off beat. So I'm wondering is there a way to fix this weird delay? It happens in a weird way 'cause it's not always but some of the notes just drag or seem rushed. At first I thought it was my tempo when playing, but I've tested this with very simple grooves and it still happens. Any clues on this?
Hey dude! I’m glad you were able to get sound running through! Are you running straight through windows audio, or are you running a separate interface?
I was actually able to fix this. My issue was the input lag. So after doing some research into that, I found a way to fix it. I appreciate your help though!
I realized way after the making of this video that I wasn’t really clear on that part and I should probably make a follow up. In this case, the audio is going out through an interface I have, so it’s going out through my monitor speakers. If you want the audio routed through your module, you’ll need to set your module as your ASIO device in reaper.
Subs!!! This is very helpful. I run into some problem maybe you can help me??? Basically I own ugritone drums and GGD drums And I run them to Reaper. I use roland TD11 to trigger midi notes. Reaper gets the midi notes from TD11 no problem. And also I’m the ugritone no problem. But in the GGD with Kontakt I just can’t get it to work. Can you please help me??? I change midi channel notes and other but I am lost. Let me know if u have another Sol out ion I can try out
Unfortunately I don’t use Kontakt and refuse to install Kontakt on my machine, so I’m not sure about the extra step, but there’s some sort of additional auxiliary step that Kontakt uses.
@@bongsenson are you running into a pc with an audio interface? If not, your easiest bet is gonna be to route your audio out into your module. If you are, I’d recommend lowering the buffer size on the interface.
So I have a midi usb to usb cable, my kit is recognized in my laptop. But when i use reaper it says there's an error issue and wont work, so i downloaded cakewalk, and it Will work, briefly for like 20 seconds, there very little sounds, but the virtual drums are highlighted and then it just stops working altogether. if i un-plug the cable and put it back in it will work briefly again. does anybody know why that happens? do i need new cable or a midi to usb cable instead? i got a Alesis crimson 2. I used a midi monitor and basically the same thing, it recognizes me hitting various drums, then stops. Thanks
Hi there! That is a strange issue! Unfortunately, on the top of my head I don’t have an answer for you as there are a lot of variables it could be, so troubleshooting could be hard over comments. As I haven’t played around with Alesis kits, I’d be lost on that end. I would recommend reaching out to Alesis support for help on that particular issue, and if you find your solution, please come back and let us know what the issue was, in case someone else stumbles across the issue.
Unfortunately I haven’t played with Counterkit because I avoid Kontakt like crazy. I know Kontakt drums have an extra step to take in order to work, and then it’s just worrying about mapping. If you manage to figure it out, make sure to save the track as a template like I show in my drum programming video so you don’t have to set it up again.
@CoreyAllgood 100% I will do because I did it before like a h Year ago I was nerding out on it and got it to work. I'll keep fucking with it everytime I'm off work it will work I even ordered the kinda circle midi cable on the back of the kit! I had the regular midi but just ordered the other one might be better one
@@cristhianreyes3437 I took a look and it seems like the module uses a generic midi controller. First thing is first. When you arm a track in reaper with the track set to midi, do you see a little line move on the fader of the track when you hit a drum?
Definitely recommend downloading your module’s drivers from the manufacturer. It *may* work on either Mac or windows, but it’s gonna work best with the manufacturer drivers
@@eli0who370 oh, if you’re on a Roland kit, I think there’s a step I forgot to add. You have to change the module’s driver mode. Not sure about on all modules, but on my td27, it’s in system->usb audio. Then you scroll down and change driver mode to “vendor.” You’ll need to restart your module for this to take effect.
I retrospectively thought of more this video needs after helping a few commenters out. Namely it skips over that this video assumes you're already using an interface and skips over using the module as the interface. What do you think is missing so I can add it to the list of the eventual redo of the video?
@@CoreyAllgood Pretty much exactly what you said. I am just getting started, and this video was a big help, but there are also some parts where you lost me while setting up the software by skipping a click or using a shortcut.

Thanks so much!
Thank you bro... Life saver!

I'm having the same issue in both Reaper and Studio One, where I cannot hear the playback of a track. It is recording, just can't hear it play back.
That’s a weird one. I’d recommend checking in Alesis’s support forums and see if anyone has had that issue. If not, try asking there.
Great video
Thanks for the video
My pleasure!
Cool thanks that really helps...✌️🙏🤘

very useful
Happy to help!
I have the TD-27 as well, and when I try to record, it says offline where the notes should be and will not play back any audio. Do you know what I might be doing wrong? Thank you.
Typically when I see “offline,” it means I’m tabbed into another program. There could be a lot of reasons. Go through the checklist:
1. Are drivers installed
2. Is your reaper set up using an ASIO system, and do you have an interface or your module selected as the subsystem?
3. Is the midi device enabled?
4. Do you have your drum plugin on and midi mapped for your module?
@@CoreyAllgood the drivers are installed, I'm not sure how to check #2, the midi device is enabled, and for #4 I'm not sure what I have to do for that, i just plugged in the module through the USB.
thankyou helps lots
Really nice content! Congrats and keep it up with the drums :D (I'm also a drummer)
I really hope this helps you get some drum stuff going. I’d be stoked to see some drum videos!
@@CoreyAllgood Thanx
Hi Corey. My edrums easily connect & play within superior drummer 3 (standalone), however I am unable to connect the edrums to superior drummer within Reaper when inserting new fx track. SD loads fine within reaper but edrums are not connected. Midi device (edrum) is enabled also. And Channels set to Any.
Is the midi device selected on the track in reaper? And is the track armed for record? Both of those are easy things to miss.
@@CoreyAllgood damn why didn't I think about that haha...oh cuz I'm still learning midi 🤣 cool I appreciate that dude
@@Chaotic_Enigma we’re all new at some point dude, and there’s no shame at all. Settings are weird. 😂
My edrums doenns't appear in the input selection... even after all of enabling and downloading the drivers, any ideas why ?
Did you make sure to enable the midi device within reaper’s preferences?
@@CoreyAllgood Thanks for the prompt reply. Do you have an Instagram Facebook we can talk from there if you want?

@@rubenramos2328 heck yeah dude! I hope this makes playing more fun and recording easier!
Thanks man. I appreciate the help too!
Where is all the sound from reaper going out? are your headphones connected to the module or your daw?
I realized way after the making of this video that I wasn’t really clear on that part and I should probably make a follow up.
In this case, the audio is going out through an interface I have, so it’s going out through my monitor speakers. If you want the audio routed through your module, you’ll need to set your module as your ASIO device in reaper.
@@CoreyAllgood Please do that would be great!!
Subs!!! This is very helpful. I run into some problem maybe you can help me??? Basically I own ugritone drums and GGD drums And I run them to Reaper. I use roland TD11 to trigger midi notes.
Thanks bro
I tried this but I got latency. Do you know how can I get a lower latency with this? Thanks.
@@CoreyAllgood I will for sure Thanks.
thank a lot
I'm trying to do this with counterkit in having so much trouble I did it one time a year ago now I forget how I got it to work...
@CoreyAllgood 100% I will do because I did it before like a h

This video skips some wildly important details for people just getting in to e-drums
