- I know the Season 2 Finale was hard for some, and some are angry with Alexander for what he did -- but remember, he's had nine years of regret for how he lost Lucy. Lennox pushed all of his guilt buttons, and what Alexander did in the finale was out of his DEEP LOVE for Charlotte. He thought he was sparing her more pain.
You can see how much they love each other. And that last look of Charlotte's was not one of a happily engaged woman.
Season 3 seems a long way away, but this is a love story for the ages. I'm willing to wait to see a beautiful ending.

Me too. Colbourne is just so much more dreamy and has more depth of character and I dunno seems more romantic. It just comes across so much more romantic and the chemistry. Sidney and Charlotte didn’t have the same chemistry.
Ben Lloyd-Hughes auditioned for Lennox’s role and they thought he would make a good Colbourne. He is a great Colbourne!

Yes, I read that in an interview he had. If I remember, he mentioned that when they gave him lines to read, it was then they realized he'd make a better Colbourne than a Lennox character!! Brilliant choice!!! I love him as Colbourne! (sigh)
True and Tom Weston-Jones auditioned for Colbourne but they thought he would make a better Lennox and Ben would be a perfect Colbourne. Such a great decision ! Ben has the shyness and tenderness that are perfect for Colbourne while Tom has Lennox's confidence. Perfect casting.
This is an amazing video. The way he looks at her is truly beautiful. Have to say though that one of the sweetest relationships is between Alexander and his brilliant housekeeper. Hope we see more of her in series 3 :)
Beautiful video! Heartbreaking ending to S2 but I know S3 will bring them together. How can it not. They are spellbinding together.
Honestly after seeing this season and looking back on the clips of season 1 with Charlotte and Sidney I wonder how anyone could like him? He was downright mean. All they ever did was argue. Sure, Colbourne may be blunt sometimes, but he’s not rude and mean like Sidney was. He’s actually very sweet, though he tried to hide that side for awhile. I mean it wouldn’t be hard for me to choose between the two.
I think more and more people are coming to realize that Sidney really didn't have the character of true Austen hero especially now that they have Xander to compare him with. I never warmed up to Sidney's character and wondered what others were seeing that I was not. I think this new story line with Charlotte and Xander will feel like it came straight off of the pages of Jane Austen writing tablet. We lucked out when Theo wasn't able to return.

Sanditon S1 was great; S2 was A_M_A_Z_I_N_G. I'm pretty sure S3 will be explosive. I love Charlotte and Alexander. It's going to be a very long wait, but it will be worth it.

This song is so perfect for Alexander! My heart breaks to see how broken he truly is. Sidney was broken but Alexander is broken at such a level Charlotte hasn’t even begun to understand. He hides behind speaking for his horse, his dog, and at the end his house. All these things are really him. When he plans for a new dog companion he thinks it will help him when he dismisses Charlotte, but no one can take her place. He runs after those two months of her absence when he realizes she’s replaced all his old memories of his hiding place (his home). She’s already consumed his heart and he’s terrified that he doesn’t deserve to be loved. I can’t wait for season 3!! ❤️💔❤️💔🎩🌊

@Jules Sciamachy Most of your analysis is indeed correct. However, what you wrote about Alexander Colbourne being "broken" is actually quite far from being true. What we are actually seeing is a man of such great integrity, strong conscience, and genuine compassion that he had become consumed by his sense of guilt. (Do you recall that Charlotte told him that he must forgive himself?) This is a well-known literary theme, and Ben Lloyd-Hughes plays his character exceptionally well, with all of the subtle nuances that a role like this requires. During an interview, Ben briefly talked about Colbourne being a man of such high integrity that it's almost as if it's a detriment to him. Here is a summation.
Like Charlotte Heywood, Alexander Colbourne is a compelling character. Obviously, throughout all of these years Colbourne has not been pining for his unfaithful, dead wife. However, he does deeply regrets having spoken so harshly to Lucy when he discovered her infidelity. He believes that what he said to Lucy was so damaging that it destroyed her will to live. So, he feels responsible for her death and for Leo not having a mother. Colbourne's compassionate heart and strong conscience have not allowed him to forgive himself-even after all these years.
In S2 we see how compassionately Colbourne treats his horse and his dog, and how he tries to shield his daughter and his niece-and now Charlotte-from himself. Colbourne is apparently afraid of ever destroying anyone again, so he puts up barriers between himself and anyone that he loves. Charlotte helped Colbourne to begin tearing down those barriers that separate him from the people that he loves. But now Charlotte is one of those people-so we see Colbourne as he struggles with his internal conflict between his desire to have Charlotte and his desire to protect her from himself. Interestingly, it is not until Colonel Lennox tells Colbourne that Charlotte is in love with him that he realizes that she is indeed in love with him, and therefore she needs to be protected from him. Because Charlotte is so unique, and neither meek nor submissive, Colbourne hadn't noticed the outward signs of her feelings about him.
During the time that Jane Austen wrote, men who did not intend to marry often wore a signet ring (engraved with their initials) on the pinky of their left hand-just as Alexander Colbourne does. Colbourne often twists the signet ring that he wears on his left hand and appears to be thinking. My guess is that is yet another reason why he chose to dismiss Charlotte. Colbourne knows that he is in love with Charlotte, and it is obvious that he desires her. The way he kisses her makes that quite clear. After Colonel Lennox told Colbourne that Charlotte is in love with him, Colbourne realized that, as her employer she might submit to his desires because he is in a position of authority over her. Now that he knows how he feels about her and how she feels about him, allowing Charlotte to remain his subordinate would have been highly unethical. Since Colbourne-unlike Lennox-is a man of integrity, he could not bring himself to allow her to continue to be his subordinate, and therefore subject to his will. That's why he forces Charlotte to leave, even after she acknowledges that she was a willing participant during their romantic moments.
When Colbourne goes to see Charlotte with the intention of asking her to return, Charlotte also makes the right decision. Sadly, at the end of Season 2, we were left with two people who are deeply in love with each other-and absolutely miserable because of the choice they had to make.
Of course, Season 3 is yet to come, and now Colbourne knows not only that he is in love with Charlotte but also how unbearably unhappy his life is without her. The look on Colbourne's face when he sees Charlotte again (in the preview for S3) makes that quite clear.

Then, as they are leaving the estate, the look Ms Wheatley gives A as he looks back, seems to say “yes, go get a fresh perspective, and return a new man.” The kisses between he and C show it’s time to “live our lives”, as she suggested. Now, what we will find with this engagement between C & the farmer will throw things into a tizzy. The “honor” card plays between A & C equally as they are promise keepers. A is going to have to present a very strong, sure, hand to make C go back on her engagement.
I’m embarrassed to admit I’ve been so totally captured by the dynamics of Charlotte and Alexander’s relationship from the start. Seeing these recaps of their encounters in this video made me weep!! Seriously! 😭 Episode 6 ending was gut wrenching for me…the utter torment Alexander lives with…did he believe Lennox’s last words to him, believing he would hurt Charlotte in the end? I want to see a beautiful reconciliation in Season 3. ❤️

I just watched episode 6 today, goodness what a 🎢 roller coaster. Was disappointed that Lockheart was a bad un, but Colbourne not getting his act together....well that was just so sad. Now Susan just have your videos to keep me going till season 3

Wow, what a beautifully well done edit of Alexander and Charlotte! RUclips is my only access to Sanditon and I’ve enjoyed piecing it together recently. Alexander and Charlotte was my introduction and they are still my favourite couple on this show.

Great video as always!!! You have posted great Sanditon vids for this season. Ugh heartbreaking these two were in the last episode. That Governess line, ugh painful. The most suprising thing was the engagement but I understand Charlotte's feelings. Hopefully Charlotte and Alexander work things out next season and overcome fear. Such a long wait but I'm glad they kept the series going. I love the character of Alexander Colbourne and how Ben has portrayed him. Will always like Sidney as a young love for Charlotte but with Colbourne the love is so much deeper, mature, and lasting in my opinion.
They’ll be fine. He had to be that harsh to get through it, otherwise he would have given in. This is classic Austen back and forth (see Pride and Prejudice and how Darcy’s motives were misunderstood) ❤️ It’s just unfortunate that we have to wait so long, but we will see a great love blossom from this 🥰

@@lisawilliamson3385 I think correct me if I’m wrong when he calls her to his study , he apologises twice for getting too emotional , stepped out of line as he is the master /employer and she is the childrens governess. 😭😭😂💔and he should have behaved better and he fires her as he was inappropriate. And offers her 6 months salary . Charlotte is furious as she says it was not onesided and she doesn’t care about the money. She feels disrespected & therefore horrible ending for both in S6 . They both love each other but Alexander needs to be honest and heal before HEA in S3 🤞🙏, sorry for rant but very 😭

I agree! Charlotte is a selfless, good person. She doesn't love Ralph and I think she wouldn't want to deprive him of being loved by someone else.
As for Colbourne, he had good intentions, he wanted to save her from himself, but he just did more damage.

I guess it makes sense in a way that she loved Sidney a lot and moving on now would feel like a betrayal and it would have seemed coerced to have two people fall in love and get married in two episodes only. Hopefully there will be some courtship in the third session. I don't like the fact that the incentive for creating new seasons is to have Charlotte never find love in the current season. Btw, what happened with Georgiana and Esther? Did Babbington come to look for his wife? I really REALLY cannot stand Edward 🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️😑

My guess is that by now most of us know that Alexander Colbourne is the perfect man for Charlotte Heywood. Alexander and Charlotte compliment and complete each other beautifully. Fate has a strange and surprising way of guiding us along on our journey. Who would have guessed that S1 would have ended as it did or that the scriptwriter and casting crew would have been forced to take an entirely different and unfamiliar path-which, in my opinion, has led to a far more interesting and reward destination? But, as fate would have it, Charlotte's romance with Sidney Parker and his betrayal in order to marry the wealthy Eliza Campion (who had done the same thing to him a few years earlier) better prepared Charlotte for the older, more experienced, and wiser Alexander Colbourne who would be attracted to and fall in love with her.
Not long into S2, it becomes clear that both Charlotte and Colbourne are surprised and thrown off kilter by their romantic attraction to each other. She and he had both sworn off love and marriage after falling in love and then being betrayed. At the end of S2, we're left wondering why exactly did Colbourne forced Charlotte to leave her governess position, and why did Charlotte not allow Colbourne to finish whatever he started to say to her in the Parker home. All we do know is that she and he made a choice, and now they are both unhappy with their lives.
We know what Charlotte wants, but what does Colbourne want? He's confusing us. Ah! The look on Alexander Colbourne's face when he sees Charlotte again in S3 makes it quite clear that Colbourne now knows exactly what he wants. The looming questions for S3 are-Can he still get her? If so, how? So, I am definitely looking forward to Season 3.
For anyone who hasn't been able to put enough of the pieces together and is still trying to make sense of Charlotte and Colbourne's love story, here is a guide.

Since Colbourne is a man of integrity, he knew that he had to let her go-even though he obviously wants her. Colbourne went to the Parkers' home to ask her to return because Augusta begged him to do so, not because he believed that was the right thing to do. (Colbourne told Augusta that she doesn't understand-which, of course, is true. Augusta doesn't know that her uncle is in love with Charlotte and that she is in love with him.) Colbourne did not object to what Charlotte said because he knew that she made the right decision, even though she made that decision because she believes that she means nothing to him. Of course, that's not true. This is a man who clearly is deeply in love with her.
When Colbourne goes to see Charlotte with the intention of asking her to return, Charlotte also makes the right decision. Sadly, at the end of Season 2, we were left with two people who are deeply in love with each other-and absolutely miserable because of the choice they had to make.
The good news is-Season 3 is yet to come and now they both know they are in love and unhappy without the other person.
That is a beautiful post full of insights and I agree with you on all points, but one. I think, alexander is younger than Sydney, I think, Sydney was 38 when he died (estimating)...Alexander is probably 35 or younger based on the clues throughout the six episodes...any way it's nether here or there, again a grat post infirmative and well thought out 😊
@@jstypula1619 Well, this is what I just read in the Sanditon character descriptions in Wiki, " Sidney Parker - The second brother, who is 28-29 years old. Good-looking, well bred, “air of ease and fashion and a lively countenance.” (Thanks to @J Stypula, I now know that the age listed in Wiki for Sidney is incorrect. @J Stypula reminded me that Sidney's year of birth and death appear on his coffin-which would mean that Sidney died at the age of 32.)
I am not sure how you arrived at the age 38 for Sidney Parker since, as far as I know, within the script we have been given no clues about his age-but I would certainly be interested in reading any information you can provide on that subject. Based upon what Colbourne told Charlotte (that he and Lucy married young), what we know about Augusta's mother (she and Lucy were twins), and being able to arrive at a reasonably approximate age for Augusta (16 or 17), I agree with you about Alexander Colbourne's probable age. Allowing for a margin of error, that would make Alexander's age 35 or slightly younger.
As far as I know-unlike Sidney, Alexander would have to be old enough to have a daughter who is Augusta's age. Whereas, I don't have any information that would suggest that would be equally true for Sidney. To my way of thinking, another factor would be that Colbourne, as I understand it, is not only a wealthy member of the landed aristocracy (since he inherited the family estate and, presumably, the lion's share of the family's wealth, also as a result of primogeniture) he is also a businessman, according to the character description that I read in Masterpiece. Alexander appears to be established and quite comfortable in that role, and he also appears to have the discipline often associated with maturity-which seemed to contrast, somewhat at least, with Sidney Parker.
In any case-all things considered-as you said, perhaps it is neither here nor there.

@J Stypula Yes. You are right, of course. Sidney's age is inscribed on his coffin in S2E1. Since his death, I have thought so little about Sidney that I had forgotten that. So, Sidney was 32 when he died, and Alexander would likely be about 34 or 35.

I have lately repeated Season 2, and until now, knowing the end of story, I cannot understand this contrast between Alexander with girls during breakfast and Alexander telling Charlotte - I'm sorry, I abused my position, thank you for your effort and goodbye forever.

I really want him to fight for her in season 3. I love Charlotte and she deserves to be properly wooed. Twice now she has been close to being chosen and being loved but both times have ended in heartbreak. No wonder she has resigned herself to a boring marriage with Ralph! At least he can't break her heart if she doesn't love him.
So sad that a woman with such love to give chooses a man she has no feelings for just because she believes marrying a man to please her father means he doesn't have the ability to hurt her. I'll be waiting, hopefully with great patience, for a better ending next year.

Second Kiss: In this S2E6 scene under a tree at Heyrick House, on the day after CH and AC’s First Kiss, Charlotte essentially proposes to him in such a beautiful and subtle way,
“I too have known heartbreak and betrayal. I had sworn off love and marriage. And yet, I have come to realize I cannot hide myself away. I must live my life. Is it not time you did the same?”
Before her last line is finished, AC has leaned in to kiss her, and then her proposal is doubly crowded out of the scene when the kiss is interrupted by Mrs. Wheatley. Did her whole statement and its meaning register with AC? Did he hear her question? Was the kiss a “Yeah, I agree with you,” or was he just focused on getting another kiss in before the start of the work day? What was in his mind at that moment? How would he have responded to her? I really wonder.
My thoughts: He begins the conversation under the trees by saying "Please forgive me, I said too much" in telling Charlotte his story with Lucy. When she tells him that not only was it okay for him to tell her, but that she understood his pain and fear about starting another relationship, I believe he's overcome with relief and gratitude for her compassion, and he literally cannot hold himself back. If they had been allowed to continue, I believe he was ready to confess his love for Charlotte and they would have been engaged by the time they exited the grove.
Mrs. Wheatley interrupts and from there, the romance takes a back seat to finding Leonora. Once they do find her, much more of the story has been revealed -- but still, Charlotte is near tears with understanding and compassion for Alexander. He thanks her and takes her hand to let her know there is much more to say.
Then, everything goes wrong. Lennox knows just what buttons to push and he manages to shake Alexander's confidence by saying that he will hurt Charlotte the same way he hurt Lucy, and because Alex truly believes he's toxic to relationships, he decides that he will spare Charlotte more pain by letting her go.
None of this was done lightly by him. And never did he mean to hurt her. In fact I don't think he knew, until she walked out the door, how deeply she loved him. By the time he realizes that, it's too late, and Charlotte has decided to protect herself.
A couple of months will go by and both will have perspective. They will realize they are meant for each other and all will be well. This is classic Jane Austen, and we are only at the middle of the story ❤️
@@susanfirth9883 Susan, your analysis is compelling, but it also made me chuckle. The ball was over, let’s say, 11:00ish, and CH comes to work at 9:00, so that was a 10-hour courtship that consisted of one kiss plus one sleepless night for both of them. Or we could say 11 hours if we count from The Dance since they were walking each other down the aisle with those eyes. I think, though, rather than being relieved when they were under the tree, they are there because he has finally let himself accept that he is madly in love with her, and he’s beside himself with those emotions. Even though he talks of “I said too much,” this is said with casualness rather than intensity, so I think his main goal with the “turn about the grounds” was to get her away from the house. I agree that CH slamming the door on him was a pivotal moment in his awareness of her feelings for him.

The writer of the show has said that neither Esther or Lennox will be in season 3. He believes their stories are complete and they don’t want to keep them swimming around just for the sake of being there...which I respect.

Wonderful! I was frustrated when finish this episode this morning, I understand that this a Jane Austin soap opera, but the will they won't they? I wondering why Charlotte is marrying the one guy she has shown no interest in at all, did some see her and Colburn or did something more happen on the night of the ball? Spicy I know.
She's engaged to Ralph precisely because she doesn't love him. Love hasn't worked well for Charlotte and she's thrown in the towel. But in S3 I have a feeling all she will need is to see Alexander again and.... ❤️❤️..... And that is a little too spicy for Austen. I guarantee you he kissed her goodnight and put her in his carriage ❤️

Augusta's mother was Lucy's twin sister -- so Markham was her married name. We don't know what their maiden names were. Lucy became a Colbourne, and her sister became a Markham.
