As an European it's strange to watch. Here is cage keeping looked down because it is against the "animals comfort". But I understand the other point of view regarding to be able to feed a growing population in difficult times. I like the business advices.
People who push for cages to be done away with do not understand poultry farming, as a farmer i can tell you that when a chicken is stressed it doesnt lay eggs, when it doesnt eat well or drink well it doesnt lay eggs, these are things that are constantly present in the deep litter method. Deep litter chicken constantly get sick and when they do it spreads fast through the whole lot, so you're forced to constantly medicate them with antibiotics. I dont see why one would see that as more "humane". The alternative is freerange poultry which highly limits the amount of chicken farmers can have therefore making eggs too expensive for consumers. I think people have to face reality when it comes to commercial farming.
