What I love most about Margaret Atwood is that she doesn’t suffer fools gladly. I’m glad she pointed out that people in economic strains aren’t going to be taking a trip to Ottawa nilly willy.

I tend to agree with the interviewer that she is an author that speaks to the public about matters that affect us individually and as a society , unlike most authours today.
In some ways she reminds me of the late, great Gore Vidal!!

To avoid divisive climate policy, you don't tax beef. You tax extraction of fossil fuels. And emission of carbon, so that, if your business involves release of methane (from CAFO effluent ponds or from fugitive methane emissions caused by fracking), you pay the tax. But not a tax. A fee is something you pay to use something. Charge a fee, then share the proceeds to all people.
We can raise the fees as high as need be to get the rate of reduction we want. Random polls can show what limit on extraction and emissions most people think is acceptable.

this conversation falls apart in the middle. unfortunately Jesse is a bit of a sycophant (possibly because Atwood is terrifying) so his questions are so busy trying to justify themselves that one tends to nap. Atwood doesn't help...she lets him squirm. aside from this embarrassing aspect of the interaction...some ideas emerged because Jesse got brave and wouldn't shut up. people from civilizations that afford a middle class lots of freedom are making CAREERS out of gender issues. there are waaay more important issues the world needs to address. but Jesse obviously needs to talk about it. this is where the whole thing falls apart except that ATWOOD SUGGESTS GENDER ISSUES PEOPLE SHOULD JUST GROW UP.
