    The Umbara arc, also known as Dee Baker falls to insanity from talking to himself for hours on end.

    For some reason, I always love Filoni's quote of, "You just can't walk in and kill him and say, 'Well, he was a Sith lord!' because what does the senate care? They're like, 'Yeah, but the trains ran on time!'" That connection between real-world Mussolini and SW's Palpatine somehow really fits. I love it.

    • @shugaroony
      @shugaroony 3 года назад +12

      And yet Mussolini was assassinated too! Dave does make a valid point though, what does the senate care if Palpatine announces he follows the Sith religion (and hide he's a powerful force user); if they are happy with his actions in running the republic/empire. Many won't.

    The truth is that Umbara chose to be with the CIS. What the Republic did there was very Imperial-esque: occupy a foreign planet, crush resistance, enslave the population aftewards. You begin understanding that the Separatists were the ones fighting for a just cause, after a while.

    • @JacksonBegleymusicguy
      @JacksonBegleymusicguy 6 лет назад +95

      The Separatist cause would have been noble if it weren't a product of Sidious and Dooku's war conspiracy plot.

    • @JCM-ve5gg
      @JCM-ve5gg 6 лет назад +73

      As far as we know the Umbarans didn't even do anything wrong. Their representative in the senate was murdered back in Season 2, that made them lose their trust in the Republic and they withdrew to the Separatists. The Republic invaded their home turf, in a lot of ways you can see the parallels to Vietnam, I suppose the Republic thought that retaking Umbara by force was the only way but that's a very Imperial approach..

    • @sethmoss8671
      @sethmoss8671 5 лет назад +12

      Vicious But the Republic did not have anything to do with Dee Chi's death. He was killed by Lolo Purs to silence her revenge scheme. Besides, Deechi was a supporter of the Fund More Clones campaign so if the Umbarans wanted to join the Seperatists, they would've done so before he was murdered. The Umbarans had to have gone to the Seperatists for more sinister reasons.

    • @starlighter93
      @starlighter93 5 лет назад +9

      And it's not like the Republic overrun a planet full of pacifists. An army of Umbarans with unknown technology switched sides during wartime. It's either the Republic attacks them (and as far as we know, none of the casualties were civillians) or they wait until Umbara attacks first.

    • @johnwells6486
      @johnwells6486 4 года назад +14

      The ideology for the CIS is a noble cause but all the CEOs n major CIS companies that sit on the CIS council are pretty ruthless. Most of their prewar droids n vehicles were from their own private militias, for example the Hellfire droids were used for debt collection so...

    "Epic" is not a good enough description of this arc, I think "masterpiece" is more fitting.
    While it helps to watch previous episodes so you know clones like Rex, I think if you started here you'd still get invested with these clones because they have such great moments in this arc.
    Especially Rex's line "we lost good MEN, not clones but *men.*"
    Such an amazing arc, plus you by the end you want to see Krell brutally murdered because of how big of a douche he was. Oh man I hated him so much!

      It's probably best for each of those clones to never see the end of the war. The tears that were shed under their helmets during Order 66 as they mercilessly slaughter the people they've always looked up to without being able to do anything about it. That's an experience you'll never come back from.

That means for every 1 U.S. Serviceman's death, 19 NVA or VC died. North Vietnam won the War against South Vietnam in 1975 when they broke their treaty and invaded. U.S. troops had completely left Vietnam in 1973.

    At the beginning of the Umbara story arc, when you see the troopers landing from the gunships being peppered with blaster fire, it reminded me of WWII. Specifically D-Day.

    • @coloneljurten9046
      @coloneljurten9046 7 лет назад +34

      I feel it was more Vietnam in theme, with the gunships dropping troops. I also believe that Geonosis was more the clone D-Day, attacking entrenched positions and then pushing through occupied territory.

    The Umbara arc left me shell shocked. I couldn't watch anymore episodes that night (I tried to watch one more but I kept pausing it and just couldn't focus). Never in my life have a felt so much emotion watching a Tv show. Intense anger towards Pong Krell, joy watching the clones hijack those planes, immense, immense horror and sadness during the friendly fire scene and Waxer's death. This arc is a *masterpiece*, and I rank it right behind Ahsoka's arc at the end of season 5.

    The episode where Krell send the clones to kill each other might be my favorite from the show, at least until now. The moment they realize they were killing each other gave me chills, like I've never had with CW before. Seeing Waxer crying right before dying was though. And the animation, the planet itself, the battle between Krell and the Clones, the lighting, it was specially beautiful. I think my only problem with the arc was the explanation to why Krell did what he did. I think it would've been more interesting to him, instead of joining the Separatists, simply be a changed man because of the war, a change that made him see Clones as inferior and expendable, to the point where he makes them kill each other just for disobeying him.

    These are great! I miss this show so much, and that's due in large part to how good this team was at making it. They managed to make a Star Wars TV show that was equal parts cartoon and drama, mature and yet watchable at young ages. I can't help but wonder where it would have gone if Disney hadn't come in and destroyed all hope of its continuation. I also can't help but hope that it may still be continued someday. I'm not a big fan of Rebels, I believe it's nowhere near as good as Clone Wars. Not as mature, a huge noticeable difference in visual quality, and the focus of the show is just too similar to the original movies. Clone Wars brought us something we had never seen before outside the expanded universe, a war. A rebellion against a superior force, the politics and forces working in and around a war, but never a view from the frontlines. We had never seen so many varied characters, locations, events, and it was refreshing and interesting. I felt for the Clone troopers, named or not, for the lesser known Jedi and other Republic allies, even for Separatists and their pawns. Nothing else in Star Wars made me think so much in every moment and feel like Clone Wars did, and now it's future is lost.

      The early 2000s Justice League TV series had some brilliant writing as well which I think deserves a spot in TV Shows meant for kids that is so much more than that. It involved story arcs, character development, and dark themes very similar to those of Clone Wars and last airbender (which I've never seen but I'll take your word for it.)

    The Scene where Rex realizes that They're shooting at their own Brothers is so Heartbreaking and when Waxer dies it's always so emotional. I wanted to just destroy Krell after that Scene. I think what makes Umbara even better is the hints at Episode III and Order 66.
    We see Krell be viewed as a heroic Jedi and then become much worse, like how the galaxy looked at the Jedi as heroes but then believed they were the bad guys.
    We see clones fighting a Jedi and then doing whatever they can to take him down, which massively hints at Order 66. Especially when it’s the 501st and 212th who gets the most Order 66 scenes. And there’s Dogma, who is loyal to the Republic and chain of command and he executes a Jedi because he “betrayed” them and the Republic.
    We see clones who are willing to obey Orders no matter who they come from, so long as it benefits the Republic, which is what we thought was Order 66 was about, until we learned about Inhibitor Chips.
    And then we see the clones view in themselves and what they think of the war, their place in it and then their place after it.
    It’s just these little things that are the universe feel so connected and connect the movies and animated shows even better.

      Nah he ain't a Sith, "Only two there are." Krell saw the corruption of the Republic and realised that it wasn't what it used to be, so he turned sides and tried to take it down from the inside, or at least hinder it. Leading from the frontlines to command suicide missions gave him the opportunity wipe out as many troops as he could without directly fighting against them.

    You know, one thing you as a viewer don't immediately realize when watching this arch is that the clones as a whole are really the bad guys here. The Umbarains are defending their home from an invading force and as a people, they have the right to self determination. Their only crime was to succeed from the Republic, which they should have the right to do.

    I've been wondering for a while. If it's just a force field door, and the force field is generated by some gizmos on the sides, and you have a light saber, why not cut the gizmos on the sight and destroy it? Like if you watch the Phantom Menace light saber battler or that part in season one when Ventress locks Ahsoka in a cell for while it seems totally doable.
