I’m not sure where you're from, but in Brazil, wealth and poverty are always together, for better or worse! It might be a bit of a culture shock, depending on your roots. Now, when it comes to Rio, I’ve got a few favorite neighborhoods: Barra da Tijuca (it’s got the beach of your dreams), Santa Teresa (it’s so quaint, you’ll think you’ve stepped into a postcard), and Ipanema/Leblon (Nice beach and full of life). These places are safe in my opinion, you can walk about during the day, no problem, and there’s more to do than a cat has lives! Now, I wouldn’t recommend strolling alone through unknown neighborhoods - it’s not an adventure you want to embark on, you can visit the favelas with a tour guide or even an Uber, It's affordable. Remember, that in Rio, it’s all about keeping a low profile, don't show off and you will be fine.
