I would love to propose an idea for airport staff training. Two people take turns blindfolding each other and guiding each other, without physical contact. I feel like this would show how useless things like hand gestures are in directing the visually impaired, and how important verbal communication is. I can fathom that even simple small talk can go a long way in getting a sense of direction.

In highschool we did an activity where they blind folded us on the oval and we had to make our way to a random spot somewhere else by listening to a particular sound.... Which we also had to find...
They had spotters but I still fell down a small ledge and walked into a barb wire fence...
That was 20yrs ago and I still remember it and keep the lessons I'd learnt ..
They really should put these people through similar... They might finally walk in another's shoes!

I suppose that maybe the hand gestures were for the dog? I don't know... I think that to do these types of jobs there should be people who have "people skills", I don't know if you know what I mean but... empathy... maybe just that would have been a huge help for him to do a decent job and be of some help. I mean, I don't work in an airport, and I had to deal with blind people only a couple times in my life, but... I mean the first thing that came to my mind was to describe to them exactly what was around them to have them feel less "lost" so to speak... but this should come to anybody's mind, I think...

So, that's how we - blind people and people with serious vision loss can work normally as you with 100% vision. I don’t know if you’re aware but the guy who ‘helped’ you onto the plane itself kept touching the dogs nose. I appreciate that different guide dog owners have different views on this but that’s a big no no in my partnership because Barney then thinks it’s play time.
Why on Earth were they not offering to guide you? In the UK, our government has said that sighted guide is exempted from all social distancing rules and staff must always offer guiding even if they’re not comfortable. I am deaf and I use hearing aid in right ear and cochlear implant in the left ear. People can be strange when it comes to dealing with unique ability that we have. I agree with many of the comments that the airport all across the USA should include some form of training on how to work with disabled travelers. I like the blindfold activity to give them a better understanding. Lets include the headset to remove sounds completely, so how do they go about the directions without being able to hear. So many ways to train them for different types of situations.

I’m so sorry Joy. I’ve been following you for a while and I would really like to say how inspiring you are! You always have a beautiful and positive attitude. You are really making a difference in the world. I have hearing loss so it is really interesting getting the other perspective as I rely on my sight, and your hearing is incredible. You’re amazing Joy! Thank you for your videos :)

honestly, I don't think this video is terrible at all. The young man, I think his name was Abby? Did very very good helping you I thought. Yes there was a language barrier, but you guys did good he really did try his best to help you.

I agree! I think it's unfair that he's painted in such a negative light. There appeared to be a language barrier/inexperience, but he wasn't disrespectful or rude. I think concerns should have been directly expressed to the airline.

I know, and now he's posted for many to see. Hard enough probably for him to have this job. Let's be inclusive. This is not educational to show people what she dealt with (this is not her ideal guide that's obvious), this is public shaming.

I agree. Things should be inclusive across the board. The same way she wants to be held in a certain regard/respected across the board is the same way one would want to be treated with a language barrier. He didn't meet her standards, so it's ok for his face to highlighted on her public platform👀

I work in the PRM (people with reduced mobility) department and majority of the staff I work with have that language barrier. It seems to me that this gentleman is very nervous and hasn’t dealt with blind passengers and their guide dogs. Maybe his supervisors/manager should take note and train him so avoid situations like that occurring again! I’m sorry to this young lady but she seems very genuine, nice and also patient. I’m sorry you had to go through this but hopefully someone day this young man can re watch this and learn from his mistake. He seems very genuine and kind towards the lady “yea ma’am” “thank you ma’am”. Many of us can’t learn from this

    Omg Arabella going backwards 😂

Poor Aribella. She did so great guiding you with almost no help from that guy. Most of the time, he wouldn’t even walk in front of her. He would just walk beside you, and there were multiple times he was walking behind you! So when random people would walk in front of her, she would automatically be confused and start to follow them. I’m sorry you had to go through such a stressful experience.

I'm legally blind and planning my first flight alone for next month. Have to say I was really nervous about navigating the airports alone, going through security, potentially dealing with a last minute change to my gate while at the airport, etc. Your videos have been a real encouragement to me though. Thank you.

They were just doing their job and besides 95% of the those passengers can see, so it's kinda hard to change your words when all you say whole day is what their seat number is.

Blind people use words like see, look, and watch all the time they’re not forbidden. Sighted people always seem to get so freaked out over it.

Soling106 but when a sighted person helping a blind person says “over here/there” people flip out at their choice of words that they also use all the time 🤷‍♀️

The first guy I saw holding out his hands once like he was pissed and the second guy was just very kind but did leave a bit early but he had so much better service then the first dude. I think the first guy was just uncomfortable too, he did look like it but he should have helped you so much more 😢
I was feeling upset for you

You always emphasize that the person guiding you needs to make sure Arebella keeps following them. It made sense when she stoped for just a quick second to say hi to a guy sitting on a bench. She seems to like people alot. ☺ She does such a fantastic job! A very hard working and friendly dog.

In my eyes he was. It wasn't perfect but he did have a camera on him coupled with a language barrier, but that part seems to be missing.

I appreciate you sharing both good and “not great” experiences because it sharpens my desires and teaches me ways to be a better guide for anyone who may I interact with that is blind, or has any special abilities. ❤️
