I’m so glad you called out the 2016 writing. As a lifelong fan, it really felt like they tried WAAAY too hard to make Ratchet into a prototypical Hollywood hero. Where here he’s more an Everyman who has an actual arc.
2:27:51 Actually fun fact, the voice actor for Clank doesn't use voice modifiers when recording lines. He's just naturally able to sound like a robot somehow with no post processing
when a voice actor does two charactrs i always lik to imagine what its like in the recording booth lol, just seeing thm switch between voices for two different charactrs
I played going commando before the first, ‘cause I didn’t know, and it is basically the most important game in my life. Next to Tools of Destruction and The Last Of Us.
I remember playing that game first and never being able to finish it because something was wrong with my disc and it would always freeze up on a specific cutscene near the end of the game. I went from Going Commando, never finishing it, to Up Your Arsenal and absolutely loving that game, and then realizing that there was a first game just called Ratchet and Clank and being jarred by how dated it felt compared to the other two when I went back to play it. Love the whole series. Skipped everything after Deadlocked, but Penny inspired me to check out all of the Future stuff before the next game comes out next month.
As someone who played Ratchet and Clank 2(Locked and Loaded in Europe) first my true affinity is with the game set in the Bogon Galaxy. But going from a game with an experience based weapon/health upgrade system and more natural feeling controls to a game that was based around the right weapons for the right enemies/situation and clunkier controls, I didn't love it any less or have noticeably less fun as the 4/5 year old I was in 2002/2003. At that age I had no notion of sequels or prequels really so the time jump I inadvertently did by going 2 then 1 then 3 then 4 didn't affect much. R&C 2 is my first ever comfort game but I can't say that this one is worse in spite of less refinement. Autist fixation rant over. Peace from London, UK.
Apparently the writers of the movie kept changing the the plot so often that it left insomniac, struggling to actually make the game so they ended up with the quarkas narrator device to explain the differences.
A shorthand explanation on Deadlock's appeal; -the music is pretty much an industrial techno version of DOOM -its a capitalism critique like the first 2 games, but within the media sector this time -It is indeed "combat over platforming", the enemy variety is some of the best to me and the combat is fast-paced and delightfully intense -THE DUAL RAPTORS
I think the major thing writers have to understand is that not everything has ro be super serious of joking, sometimes its just okay to talk and stuff!
I think it's safe to say, after Rift Apart, that the 2016 game's weirdness was an isolated incident due to the movie! (Also, for the Spidey games, the comic writers only provided story ideas, the Insomniac team wrote the rest)
Does this mean we might see some more ps2 games? I would love to see a playthrough of Jak and Daxter! That game was my whole childhood and I would love to see you play through it and add your sense of humor
One thing I like about this game compared to all the sequels is how low the damage scaling is, so the wrench and your starting weapons are mostly viable for the whole game.
22:31-22:36 Ratchet: Look, plumber’s crack. Plumber: What did you just say? Ratchet: I said, “Look - the plumber’s back!” 🤣🤣🤣 That was a smooth, low-hanging fruit move! LOL 😂
The fact that penny quotes A Crack In Time with "The Hypersonic Brainwave Scramblaaaaaaah!" Makes me so happy. While modern R&C isn't too good, Crack In Time was the last AMAZING one. I think it's the last game that kept the classic feel.
You know, you say that, but I don't think that's necessarily a meaningful statement. Keep in mind, there have only been three mainline games *since* Crack in Time, and all three have a good reason to be exceptions: -Into the Nexus was only like five hours long -2016 was a remake and also a movie tie-in, so its problems don't necessarily reflect on everything else -Rift Apart hadn't been released yet when you made this comment So like, "A Crack in Time was the last true Ratchet experience" might have been a true statement when you made this comment, but I don't think it was a particularly meaningful one. It's not really saying much. You might have been holding All 4 One and Full-Frontal Assault against the series, too (and while I love Into the Nexus, those two combined with 2016 could admittedly give you a pretty bleak perspective on the state of the franchise), but they're just spinoffs, so I wouldn't hold them to as high of a standard as the other games.
My favourite R&C game is A Crack in Time, but I love this one about as equally. The gameplay is fun, the environments are nice and the anti-capitalist themes subtly present in the story works together to make a great experience. It’s no wonder why they made a franchise out of the game, for better or for worse.
@jjjjjjjjjjjjjjjj454 Not weird to me. Yeah, the PS3 titles can be decisive at times. It started the future saga of the series, which felt a little safer than the original trilogy, and as for after it, they tried all sorts until Rift Apart, so things like All 4 One and Full Frontal Assault weren’t received too well as they tried to change it up a bit. A Crack in Time was the finale of the Future trilogy, and is received quite well in the community, even to this day. Movement and combat is fun, the story is compelling and you don’t need to have played previous games to enjoy it (I know from personal experience, as it was my second R&C game), the designs of characters and planets are well done and hold up well for their time. They have their flaws, as do all things, but it is a really fun game, nostalgia goggles or no. But it’s up to personal opinion at the end of the day, and this is just mine.
@ge789 nice, thanks for response i only played ps2 ones cuz all my friends got 360 and i didnt want to be only person with ps3. but might go back and play them now
18:12 Watching this part after knowing what her Jak & Daxter experience is feels like watching a prequel that's blatantly foreshadowing something further in the series.
Love being able to see your streams in this channel, since I'm from a different timezone and most of the time i can't really watch them live! You bring me much happiness, miss funnygirl
God watching that boss fight was so frustrating. I guess people aren’t used to pressing start in the middle of a boss fight anymore. I don’t blame anyone, so many games are online nowadays that pressing start doesn’t actually pause the game, but still. Also in RnC1, bomb glove the best for early to mid game
I binged through the original trilogy again on an emulator a couple months ago, and god they're so good. And each title gets progressively better imo! :D
Was “Did he just slide down a sewer pipe“ a Mario reference/ram Also love the anti capitalistic rhetoric! This game really has soul and charm you feel the joy put into this
I'm very happy that she played 2016 before playing this game; she will now see how much more thought out this story is in comparison. 2016 is decent, but this game is just good. (Not to mention because Ratchet goes from a jerk to a nice guy as he grows during the story, and doesn't just start out heroic)
I think you’ll love the second game a lot more even. The gameplay is hugely improved in the sequel. This is a wonderful series and I’m so glad you’re playing it.
Ratchet and Clank, I loved the game so much when i was a kid. Even though the copy I owned was scratched, and because of the scratches the game wouldn't load the final Boss, I could explore half of the homeworld in the end game, but it just kept crashing. Yes PS2 Crashing lol. Last year I played the series reboot of the series, and I feel back in love with the game.
I'm so happy to see this play through🥰 especially with penny talking about the writing of the 2016 (🤢) version. the writing doesn't have to worry about it trying to BE funny, because it just is funny.
I haven't played it, but from what I've heard/seen of it, and the movie, which I *did* watch, I feel like they were basically trying to remake the OG game with the style of the Future series, but 1. relied way too much on borrowing/referencing stuff from the Future series, 2. missed a lot of the depth of the Future series, and 3. also cut out a lot of the fun stuff from the original game to make room for "lol memes" humour
@Safehouze__ This doesn't make any sense, the writing of the remake was more immature than this one. Not that people can't enjoy that, but liking the OG Ratchet and Clank doesn't make you immature. Unless I've misunderstood what you mean. Personally, my issue is less with the writing and more with the AMOUNT of writing. The chatter of NPCs with every little thing you do is grating. I think even fans of the remake can agree it was too much.
Super glad to see Penny go through R&C! I HIGHLY recommend Jak and Daxter if you have fun with this game. The Jak Series goes through a lot of "Changes" in it's trilogy. The First Game is more like a classic collectathon, all about COLLECT ALL THE THINGS! Where as the second and third games are more kinda like a Fantasy Sci-fi Grand Theft auto. All super fun games to play that are still some of my favorite action platformers. Although the dialog and cutscenes in Jak 2 and 3 are mega edgy early 2000s dated, it's still great to goof on.
My dad got me a PS2 when I was a kid and I didn’t know he had it until I played Ratchet and Clank (2002) and I got hooked on it but couldn’t finish most levels until the day I found out about emulators and PCSX2 years later. That’s when I started playing R&C again more and more. I’m glad you’re playing it.
I would be super into a stream series of the Jak trilogy. The latter two, particularly the second, are some of my favorite games, and they don't get nearly enough play nowadays.
Man it's been sooooo long since I played the original that I forgot how much better it is than the new one, and just how content got cut, like Eudora was one of my favorite worlds as a kid and it's just completely gone in the remake, god what a shame
Slowly watched this as I played through 2016, gon keeping watching the next eps as I do challenge mode now. Rly rly crazy how badly they gutted the original.
oh god i didnt even know Mr. Vendor was so squished in the PS3 version, he looks fine in the vita version but that's possibly because the console is smaller anyway, know this is late, but its cool to see you playing one of my favourite franchises, and I'm glad you've been enjoying it!
This was like the first game I EVER played on my PS2 which I got (when I was 6) in 2006, I know at that time R&C was pretty late but this was such a fun game that I was never good at. Cant wait for the ps5 game :)
I killed the Giant alien snapper using the sonic summoner helmet to summon a sand mouse that pilots a flying saucer that shoots enemies. It's like a silent version of Mr. Zurkon. I also used the Glove of Doom and the Pyrocitor.
This game and Jak and Daxter have been and still are my favorite games. The sequels for both are great too but I love the first games most. I loved watching this and I'm excited to see you play the other games!
Drek: Is your current occupation leaving a rotting taste in your mouth? Then you need to know about BTS. Snap: No, I'd rather not. 🤣 oh god this is so memeable
Its so tragic to me how you picked up on how much more fun this Ratchet's personality is when it is often cited that people thought he was "too mean" in R&C1 and that immediately caused them to start mushing the personality of the series.
Try as he might, Ratchet could not breathe underwater!
I’m so glad you called out the 2016 writing. As a lifelong fan, it really felt like they tried WAAAY too hard to make Ratchet into a prototypical Hollywood hero. Where here he’s more an Everyman who has an actual arc.
I imagine 2016 is a video game made in-universe about them and corporate meddling ruined what actually happened.
Plus they made Chairman Drek a supporting villain in his own story. I love Nefarious, but Drek deserves some respect too, darn it.
@TangledLion that's how I feel it worked out
I especially love his and all of the characters personalities and how they are all not just NPC 10
oh and I now I finally know the meaning of BTS
Well, it was a game based off a movie based on a game.
never noticed that Ratchet is fucking jacked for his size
His hands are ridiculously oversized
He's also only around 15 in this game
crash syndrome
@Dante_Sparda_DMC That explains a ton about his character
Ratchet and Clank was one of my first experiences with video games as kid. Every time someone mentions it I instantly wanna go replay.
2:27:51 Actually fun fact, the voice actor for Clank doesn't use voice modifiers when recording lines. He's just naturally able to sound like a robot somehow with no post processing
Hes done megatron in beast wars and optimus prime in transformers animated
@aquariussolaris2492 lol he done prime and Megatron he could argue with himself in the shower
when a voice actor does two charactrs i always lik to imagine what its like in the recording booth lol, just seeing thm switch between voices for two different charactrs
David Kaye is built different lol
vocal fry
This game is the source of my love of sandsharks as videogame enemies
They're like sharks... but in sand
Also, their design is just SO GOOD
it reminds me of moucers from tmnt 2012 version
@andrewaftontheandroidhedge2780 There's an enemy even closer to those in the sequel :)
-Capitalist businessman villain
-Mention of socioeconomic disparity
This game really has no qualms with bringing out the guillotines
A huge shame that the remake was cleansed of any of that.
@shiethegal Also of any of the actual funny and whitty character dialogue and emotional beats
@shiethegal Such a disappointment
Really appreciate how anti-capitalist the first two games are (and Deadlocked to an extent). Not something you see in games outside, say, Oddworld.
@zachstyles4177 It's refreshing
That thumbnail art is so cute
I never knew how much I needed lombax Penny
The Rift Apart art has her lombax be pretty thic tho. =I
My personal nostalgia is for Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando, so looking forward to that if Penny enjoys the first game
@IM-tz7hc It was a delightful rant. Thanks for sharing
Apparently the writers of the movie kept changing the the plot so often that it left insomniac, struggling to actually make the game so they ended up with the quarkas narrator device to explain the differences.
"NOOO RATCHET, STOP SIDEFLIPPING! MY BAAACK HUUURTTSSS"
I will give Mr Zurkon points for being voiced by Hotel Mario
Really happy to see someone relatively new to the franchise notice the horrors they slowly committed
i've never seen this game but a good friend talks abt it a lot so i'm gonna learn now!
A shorthand explanation on Deadlock's appeal;
-the music is pretty much an industrial techno version of DOOM
-its a capitalism critique like the first 2 games, but within the media sector this time
-It is indeed "combat over platforming", the enemy variety is some of the best to me and the combat is fast-paced and delightfully intense
-THE DUAL RAPTORS
Watching someone play the OG game after seeing them play the 2016 movie tie-in and utterly living for it adds three years onto my life.
I swear this series is so good. Really nostalgic for me as well.
*realises I missed several streams of the Ratchet & Clank series*
Well, time to binge-watch all the vods.
Penny, fell for the classic booba :
I am so happy Penny and Ratchet & Clank both exist ❤
h i t h e r e f u z z b a l l
When she did the clank impression befor the voice editor one caught me off guard cuz it sounded just like him
I think the major thing writers have to understand is that not everything has ro be super serious of joking, sometimes its just okay to talk and stuff!
A Ratchet and clank Fandub needs to happen.
GOD YES THE OG TRILOGY IS _RIPE_ WITH DUB OPPORTUNITY
@trashlord3214 it will be chaos and i love the idea
Hehe, 1
Yes, please!
Absolutely! Ratchet & Clank is the first game I replayed to death and loved so much. The original and future trilogies would be amazing for dubs!
I think it's safe to say, after Rift Apart, that the 2016 game's weirdness was an isolated incident due to the movie!
(Also, for the Spidey games, the comic writers only provided story ideas, the Insomniac team wrote the rest)
I want a fucking gif of that plumber dude saying socioeconomic disparity
Hi there fuzzball, glad you love it!
Penny learning that this series used to be about something.
small brain: flamethrower
big brain: go go fire gun
I've never seen anyone stream any ratchet and clank games. I know I'm way late but I'm so here for it
Does this mean we might see some more ps2 games? I would love to see a playthrough of Jak and Daxter! That game was my whole childhood and I would love to see you play through it and add your sense of humor
Also, I don't think there's too much that hasn't aged well. The only thing "bad" that I can remember was meant to be that way when the game came out
Sonic and shadow gens, all I am saying...
I literally just played the remake a second ago
The worst thing about Quark in the newer games is that he became exactly what they were making fun of in the originals.
One thing I like about this game compared to all the sequels is how low the damage scaling is, so the wrench and your starting weapons are mostly viable for the whole game.
Did we play the same game?
@ninjabluefyre3815 I've played it and I agree with OP, they're totally right
@ninjabluefyre3815 I think you weren’t playing the right game if you disagree with that……
22:31-22:36
Ratchet: Look, plumber’s crack.
Plumber: What did you just say?
Ratchet: I said, “Look - the plumber’s back!”
🤣🤣🤣 That was a smooth, low-hanging fruit move! LOL 😂
I can't believe chat would do something so heinous on Respect Women Month
Her back will *never* be the same
Chat: "haha boobs go fwooomp!"
*Penny dying of embarrassment*
The fact that penny quotes A Crack In Time with "The Hypersonic Brainwave Scramblaaaaaaah!" Makes me so happy. While modern R&C isn't too good, Crack In Time was the last AMAZING one. I think it's the last game that kept the classic feel.
Crack In Time has its weaknesses a little gameplay wise, but like, man, I do love that game.
@onimaxblade8988 hell no. Before rift apart it was the best gameplay wise I find
You know, you say that, but I don't think that's necessarily a meaningful statement. Keep in mind, there have only been three mainline games *since* Crack in Time, and all three have a good reason to be exceptions:
-Into the Nexus was only like five hours long
-2016 was a remake and also a movie tie-in, so its problems don't necessarily reflect on everything else
-Rift Apart hadn't been released yet when you made this comment
So like, "A Crack in Time was the last true Ratchet experience" might have been a true statement when you made this comment, but I don't think it was a particularly meaningful one.
This game is really good balancing wise,
Like I still used the flamethrower thingy even in late game (well before I got RYNO)
Coming back and watching this to prepare for Rivet :>
I know I'm 8 months late but the whole my next as a villainess part was just too good
Skid McMarx's dad is Karl McMarx
My favourite R&C game is A Crack in Time, but I love this one about as equally. The gameplay is fun, the environments are nice and the anti-capitalist themes subtly present in the story works together to make a great experience. It’s no wonder why they made a franchise out of the game, for better or for worse.
bit weird to respond to a year old comment but was that one still good i heard ps3 ones went down hill
@jjjjjjjjjjjjjjjj454
Not weird to me.
@ge789 nice, thanks for response i only played ps2 ones cuz all my friends got 360 and i didnt want to be only person with ps3. but might go back and play them now
fun watching her play but her not using the pyromancer and dying trying to use the wrench killed me
18:12
Watching this part after knowing what her Jak & Daxter experience is feels like watching a prequel that's blatantly foreshadowing something further in the series.
39:22 Timing of the loon call + Clank’s stretch made me laugh
3:10:30 Try as he might, Ratchet could not respect women
Love the thumbnail!
I never realized I am a little over a month older than ratchet and clank
This was very mood happening.
I always thought that Ratchet was just a fox
One of my Favorite Game Series of all Time!
is that alien gman
Was “Did he just slide down a sewer pipe“ a Mario reference/ram
Also love the anti capitalistic rhetoric! This game really has soul and charm you feel the joy put into this
Browsing my RUclips today and the instant I saw this and I must see! Brings so much good memories. Definitely would watch more.
“Come and buy a Pixelizer!” Has haunted me ever since I played the PS4 game, I refused to buy one and hate the weapon because of the annoying vendor.
God I wanted Grindboots to be real SO BAD as a kid.
Penny is going to love Courtney gears. Lol XD
Ratchet and Clank, I loved the game so much when i was a kid. Even though the copy I owned was scratched, and because of the scratches the game wouldn't load the final Boss, I could explore half of the homeworld in the end game, but it just kept crashing. Yes PS2 Crashing lol.

You make writing sound so easy. Like they intentionally wrote the 2016 game to pass Penny off.
15:09
THAT'S THE ORIGIN???
I remember watching this during my Ratchet phase in 2022
10:05pm
Oct 20 24 Sunday
I am so dang happy you are playing this!! This game made a lifelong friendship for me when it came out.
"Riight Al?"
*Æh*
Aww you cut out the Rachel and Clunk donations
This and ratchet and clank deadlock are two great games of my childhood
I'm happy he spoke about Jak and Daxter😂. Love that game, too. I enjoy Ratchet and Clank games then I think about Jak and daxter 😅😊
OH HECK YEAH the PS2 ratchet and clank games are my favourite video game trilogy. Also the music is so good I'm so glad Penny is playing it :)
I am pumped for this series.
Opens the vendor and see the stretched gadgetron guy *insert wide Putin song*
My dad got me a PS2 when I was a kid and I didn’t know he had it until I played Ratchet and Clank (2002) and I got hooked on it but couldn’t finish most levels until the day I found out about emulators and PCSX2 years later. the clank voice is spot on

watching this for the first time now and i thought 15:09 was a follow alert
Slowly watched this as I played through 2016, gon keeping watching the next eps as I do challenge mode now. Rly rly crazy how badly they gutted the original.
oh god i didnt even know Mr. Vendor was so squished in the PS3 version, he looks fine in the vita version but that's possibly because the console is smaller
anyway, know this is late, but its cool to see you playing one of my favourite franchises, and I'm glad you've been enjoying it!
It would be cool to see a fandub of these games.
This was like the first game I EVER played on my PS2 which I got (when I was 6) in 2006, I know at that time R&C was pretty late but this was such a fun game that I was never good at. Cant wait for the ps5 game :)
Local Funny Internet Girl Re-Discovers What Good Writing Is
I for one would absolutely love a Jak and Daxter series
I really enjoyed this stream and I look forward to a playthrough of Sly 2!
Wow, your good mood is contagious. Always fun to see someone enjoy a game from my childhood. 😁
I actually just started replaying this game yesterday!
I killed the Giant alien snapper using the sonic summoner helmet to summon a sand mouse that pilots a flying saucer that shoots enemies. It's like a silent version of Mr. Zurkon. I also used the Glove of Doom and the Pyrocitor.
2:03:05 definitely not taken out of context
But 2:14:45 though
This game and Jak and Daxter have been and still are my favorite games. The sequels for both are great too but I love the first games most.
I loved watching this and I'm excited to see you play the other games!
Drek: **singing** Flying in my spaceship, gonna blow this planet up! Gonna blow it up with dynamite, wo-oah!
Okay time to replay ratchet and clank
Drek: Is your current occupation leaving a rotting taste in your mouth? Then you need to know about BTS.
Snap: No, I'd rather not.
🤣 oh god this is so memeable
Its so tragic to me how you picked up on how much more fun this Ratchet's personality is when it is often cited that people thought he was "too mean" in R&C1 and that immediately caused them to start mushing the personality of the series.
..I feel like Keith from the Try Guys would love the Keith channel.
I love ratchet & clank when I was a kid why I was ashamed that I didn't got to play it😢
Hope you enjoy this series, Penny
I can't be the only person who immediately thought of Crab Rave from the music at 14:37, right?
