White Whale is probably referencing the book Moby Dick. Because of the book, white whale refers to something mysterious that is always being pursued, but never caught. :)

Since i have gotten older i have noticed that the perfumes i like now are much more stronger. My favourite at the moment is Myrrh & Tonka by Jo Malone. I also love Allure by Chanel. I used to love Daisy before but not sure i would buy it anymore though.

You're spot on about perfumes triggering memories to a certain time. Black Orchid always reminds me of the city, as I happen to wear it all the time when I visit.

Some of these normal perfumes don’t last long because of the alcohol in them as it burns away the oils in the perfume.
High end designer brands such as Chanel, Dior, YSL etc some are good but the smell doesn’t last.
It’s not worth spending all that money on something that’s not gonna last.
Your only just paying for the designer brand, bottle, packaging and advertising.
I always use 100 % concentrated oils, such as the ones you can get from Suna Musk in Westfield, or from special Arabic stores that only sell perfume oil.
100% Perfume oil last for DAYS even WEEKS. It’s also very very inexpensive. Some of the oils that I have only cost just £2.00! As it’s 8ml, but you only just need to put a little bit on as it’s concentrated. x

Haha it's funny how you said you can't wear certain perfumes because of memories, I have that same thing with a lot of perfume that I love. That made me stop using about 30 out of 40 that I have 😕 That also happens with other people's perfume if, let's say, I had a bad experience with them after that I can't stand the perfume that they wore, even if I used to like it! I get that memories thing with music as well🌞
And yes, based on your choices I can tell you like heavier perfumes 😊 I like a lot of the ones you have mostly on others. I love floral perfumes and I have been wondering about Gucci bloom, (I have a bad association with a few of Gucci perfumes for the reason mentioned above haha). I think you kind of convinced me to try it! 💛

I was always so drawn to the miss dior bottle, but couldn’t bring myself to like the scent. It just wasn’t me. But when I smelled the new one I bought it right away. I do love floral scents btw, but this was a bit different. Have been using it as my autumn/winter perfume! 😄 Recommend it so much!

What a lovely post..thank you! My grandmother once owned a hotel based perfume bar in a resort hotel. She adored perfume and I got my love of it from trying on hers as a child..a special Saturday activity in my childhood. I am an academic psychologist, the senses of smell and taste are the most closely associate with memory. Our sense of taste often leaves us before we die but memories at other times of life can be strongly associated with smell and tastes. And both positive and negative experiences become in our minds STRONGLY associated with smells as eating (the pleasure of which largely derives from SMELL, a vital component of taste, is one of our most basic functions to keep us alive.

I have to admit to really liking Gucci Bloom! (Which is perhaps a firing offence as I work for Jo Malone! LOL), and reckon it's similar to Tom Ford Soleil Blanc. You should try some of the Jo Malone intense colognes - wonder if you might like Velvet Rose and Oud, or Dark Amber and Ginger Lily? Pop into a boutique and have a play! :) xx Love your channel!!

I live in the rural U.S. south so no one has heard of it yet 😂I also like Dolce Rosa Excelsa by Dolce and Gabbana, absolutely blooming by Dior, Bourbon by Elizabeth and James, and a cheap Anthropologie perfume called Fleur D’Oranger. Love this video Sophie!

Why the perfume industry is so success? The smell of them bring back memories. At 17, I use a kind of baby perfume with a sweet tone, my boyfriend at the time, love it. Even he told me baby by the smell. One day, I know wanna see him, when I say hello with a cheek kiss (to my now ex) put the baby perfume and the guy put the biggest smile. Memories people, the food and music have the same effect. XoXoXo from Chile 🇨🇱😊💕

    Hi Sophie,
This was great video about frangrances. I have a lot in my collection too. In past 3 years I learned and noticed that it is much better to have a small bottle of the perfume as it evaporates with time. Also this gives me an opportunity to use different frangrances and use them more efficiently. My favorite one is Bvulgari omnia coral

If you like heavy perfumes, than these are three to try: My Burberry Black, Versace Crystal Noir and Attrape-Reves by Louis Vuitton (this one has strong staying power). I wear them in the evening. Also, a great travel summer, beach, travel body fragrance mist is Brazilian Crush by Sol Janeiro. It has a buttery, caramel scent. You can spray this all over your body with your swimsuit on and go to the beach.

Oh gosh I really resonate with scents and music carrying very strong memories. The smell of Davidoff Cool Water and Clinique Happy remind of highschool and not in a good way. The same with Dave Mathews Band and Lauren Hill music. On the other hand Lancôme Poem abd Hannae Mori bring me back to when I first fell in love with nicer perfumes. Btw, you’re sweater is gorgeous!

Your food poisoning episode with the accompanying scent really hit the mark with me. I loathe the scent of potpourri. It goes back to my childhood when my mother always kept an Avon potpourris air freshener spray in the toilet. So now, decades later, every time I smell potpourri my brain immediately associates it with diarrhoea.

"Cuir Beluga" is one of my favorite scents ever. "Cuir" means leather. And "Beluga" is the name of the Beluga whale that delivers the caviar. I guess they named it that way in order to say that this is the most exclusive leather smell out there (so "Beluga" is used here metaphorically). Greetings!

Hey, Sophie! Beluga is a type of whale, yes. My guess was that Cuir Beluga contained ambergris, which is an expensive and luxurious ingredient in perfumery. I hate to put you off, but ambergris is essentially whale vomit! ;) However, upon further investigation of this scent, I didn't find any admission of ambergris in the notes. Actually, I think it might be only one type of what that produces ambergris... Perhaps the name is to invoke the feeling of velvety soft leather? (cuir=leather en français)

Fun fact from a former neurology student: The reason scents conjure up memories so effectively is because the olfactory center (that processes smell) in the brain is seated extremely close to the area where memories are stored and formed.
Less fun thing: I did the same thing with the food poisoning. I *love* ginger in smoothies, and so one morning I made myself a breakfast smoothie with lots of ginger. Little did I know that the yoghurt I used was quite badly expired, and any off taste was masked by the amounts of ginger I'd put in there. So I got to work, opened up the café I was working in at the time, just managed to serve my first guest, and then literally emptied my stomach into the sink just behind me as the first guest walked away.
So now, as much as I love it, the smell and taste of fresh ginger brings back a horribly vivid memory of being violently ill.

I’ve just read your comment with my hand over my mouth 😂 I knew your story was going to be bad but as soon as I saw “expired yoghurt” I was like ......ooooooh noooooo! 🤮 So no more ginger for you?! 😋
I’ve got a similar story to yours involving Bacardi rum (when I was a teenager). I now can’t so much as smell the stuff for wanting to be sick!
Well I’m glad you’re ok, thanks for sharing your story - you had me reading it on the edge of my seat!
That so interesting about where smells are held in the brain too and would make sense regards memories. I get a similar memory/association thing with music too!
Thank you so much for watching and sharing your story! Xxx😘💖

No more ginger for me, I wouldn't touch the stuff with a ten feet pole! And I'm assuming no more Bacardi rum for you! 😂 😂

      @SophieShohetOfficial  6 лет назад

I don’t think I can ever drink Bacardi again in my life 😂 I feel sorry for you that it’s happened with ginger though as it’s used in so many nice dishes 😣 Have a lovely weekend!xx😘💖

What do you think about the new fragrance from Chanel, Gabrielle? I find it amazing. Every time I am in Paris, I get it. (I’ve got lots of unfinished bottles now lol, love it though)

Armani “Si” is one of my faves , soooooo perfect and gorgeous 👍🏻👍🏻
I’m gonna be checking out the Macs “velvet teddy” now - I love Thierry Muglers “Angel Muse”- it’s amazing for a cold winters day
You are my spirit animal - so classy, cute , and high class without being annoyingly bougie .
    I want to be u lol 😀😜

And thank you for showing your hair perfume! I was on a look out for something like that. I never used anything from this brand, I'm interested in trying it. Does it make the hair dry at all? The way some dry shampoo do? Some of them dry out my hair too much and I can't use them for this reason.

I always liked the IDEA of Miss Dior, but never liked it when I tried it. Maybe I’ll give it another try, if the new composition is different.
