    The comment about backing in from the driver side is great…but you better practice from the passenger side as well. In my case I can only back into my barn from the passenger side. And some camp sites can only be entered from the passenger side. The power mirror is your friend here. Keep adjusting your angle of the mirror to keep the trailer in sight.

    Many years back I purchased a pop up tent trailer from a guy who trained new semi drivers how to drive for a major trucking company. He suggested backing up with only my right hand at the 6 oclock postion on the steeringwheel. The direction my hand moved was the direction the trailer moved as I tracked it via the side mirrors. At the time I had a long single driveway right by the neighbour's fence off a busy road and this technique proved successful as I never hit that fence.

    Definitely some good tips, I practiced a lot solo, because I didn't always have a spotter. So I'd be using my mirrors constantly, and with newer vehicles, I added the use of the backup camera. I have family members that have ignored the spotter, and jackknifed the trailer and then blame the trailer, lol. Only 1 trailer we have had, has had a slight bow to the tongue, but its easy enough to compensate for. I'd use big hand signals when spotting, and make myself visible to the driver, only time its not as easy to do so is when we're in the garage, not enough light, haha.

    Yeah I remember towing a jet ski/trailer and navigating around ramps to launch it. Definitely a good learning experience when I was young. After working at a job that necessitated extreme backing sometimes (like backing up a mile or two on a trail sometimes) I feel pretty damn confident now.

    Great useful video, I'm 56 years old & have been backing up trailers all my life. It started with backing up tobacco trailers at the barn on a tractor at 10 years old to backing up construction trailers just this past weekend. Always backing from the driver's side "whenever possible" Is the best tip for me.

    Good idea with the toy truck/trailer. Reminds me of practicing my boat steering skills with my breakable Titanic model in the bathtub and toilet.

    Great video guys. We have a 16' travel trailer so are constantly dealing with the short trailer twitchiness. One tip that was an enormous help to me is to start with an S turn. Assume you're entering a driver side space. Pull up close on the driver's side, stop, turn the wheel hard right, pull a few feet forward, turn the wheel hard left, pull a few feet forward, stop. Now when you start backing the truck and trailer are already at an angle so the trailer immediately turns to enter the space. With some practice you quickly learn where to start the turn and how far to move on each part of the S.

    I have backed trailers for years, both my own and trailers for my work. One thing people need to know is that every length of trailer backs differently. Believe it or not, a longer trailer is more "forgiving" than a short one. If possible, when I am setting up to back a trailer, I prefer to get the trailer and the truck completely straight and then back from there. For me, it's easier than starting with a trailer that is turned the wrong direction from where I'm trying to put it, although, I realize that isn't always possible.

    Awesome advice and tips.
    My dad designed and built this really cool trailer back in the 80s for himself that he put a weatherproof storage compartment on it for extra luggage. It attached to the bumper of our van with these claps and had a single wheel that swiveled in the center. It made backing it up and pulling it super easy. I wish we still had that trailer.

    The interesting thing is the pro trailer back up functions as how I learned to used my mirrors. Hand on the top center of the wheel and then if you see the trailer getting too big or more in one mirror or the other, you turn your hand toward that mirror to get the trailer to "go away."

    Some campgrounds the campsites are angled where you have to back from the passenger side and also because it’s a one way street

    This is perfect, I drive around with a small dump trailer at work all the time. This summer I will be towing a 31ft RV for a trip. So this is exactly the type of video I wanted to watch

    While I understand the principle of backing driver's side only, my wife and I encounter many situations where we have to back to the passenger side. We are equally comfortable with either side. Also, because I have been towing and backing trailers for so many years, I don't think I would ever use a pro trailer assist type of system.

    Howard is so right about first timers giving up after only a few tries backing in a trailer. We had a tent trailer and could never back the thing straight into the driveway. We waved the white flag and bought a wheel that attached to the tongue and we pushed it into place. This was way before RUclips and channels such as Truck King that could show us the technique for getting it parked in one go.

    Just starting the video. Here is my advice. If your tow vehicle has a low range use that. If you can't disengage the front axle by unlocking the hubs or have a open center differential then don't do this on high traction surfaces. But, being able to have much more control with high torque/low speed is a real game changer. Low range can also help when hitching up.
    I learned on a 1989 F-150 short bed, regular cab, manual transmission with manual locking hubs and a transfer case shifter on the floor. We left the hubs unlock most of the time, but we didn't hesitate to reach down and put the transfer case into low range when backing up the trailer.

    1st ever tow with was with a 21ft travel trailer being towed with my Tacoma TRD off road crew cab long bed. I picked pull through slots because my clip on tow mirrors flew off driving, and didn’t get in until 0100 and 0200. Went from ct to tn.

    Maybe be the MTO or other province agencies should offer a teaching course on how to use a trailer when towing on a class G licence, that would help a lot of drivers out on the road. As you mentioned the key words is experience. We need to taught on one of these driving experience.

    The horrible hand signal techniques that so many people use while trying to be helpful and guide someone, they would be better off if they just stood there with their hands in their pockets !. That may sound harsh to some but a hand or arm flapping away many feet away can look like keep coming back ... stop .... go forward .... turn ... which way ? and on and on. Long long ago I worked for a short while for an oilfield company and they had a written set of arm motions that all employees had to follow to guide the backing of any unit when in the shop yard or oilfield lease site etc. For safety reasons we HAD to have a person guiding while backing in their equipment yard to maintain safety as a lot of accidents happen while backing. I would imagine most companies have such guidelines that their employees are taught. As to the always turning from the drivers side of the vehicle, unfortunately that is often not a choice so one should practice both ways, and yes getting out as the driver and looking at what is going on as many times as required vs "hoping" nothing will go bad.

    I guess I am weird. I find it easier for me to backup from passenger side 🙄.
    I use orange collapsible cones to backup, gives me good points to look at.
    I also have trouble using mirrors backing up, causing me to turn around, which is harder the older I've gotten.
    Any tips on backing up with mirrors, I would rather do that?

    Driver's Side only - never thought about that. That means i've been doing it wrong with my RV down my driveway (normally I pull up where my house and driveway are on passenger side), but I clearly need to do this the opposite way.

    Really really stupid, but i learned the basics of backing up a trailer in american truck simulator. It actually worked in learning how to think about the pivot point of a 5th wheel/gooseneck. Now a bumper tow is very different animal and the pivot point being behind your rear axle messed with me, still for 5th wheel, youd be suprised how accurate it is for a game

    I back up my TT next to the house 🏠 off the street day or night with inches to spare between the house and the fence. If you want to see for yourself there's a short video on my channel and all I'll say is "That's how it's done"

    Is it true that tandem axle trailers are easier to back up than single axle? Once I got my wife to stay in my sight lines backing up, it goes well. I don't have much trouble backing up our 23 foot Roo. I am also glad my Tundra has high boost on the power steering, sure saves wear and tear on old worn out arms and also automatic transmission. Backing up with a manual would really suck.

      They definitely can be, single axles can pivot pretty easily. Tandems take a bit more force and so I think are a bit slower to respond which is a good thing sometimes for recreational users.

    As someone who has a CDL and drives a truck for a living , I believe that anything bigger than like a 6 foot trailer , should require the driver to have a CDL by law. I can't count how many times I see Joe schmoe who probably just had a beer pulling a 40 foot trailer with a boat attached and a quad attached. How is it legal to pull doubles or triples for a regular Joe who probably doesn't deserve a normal license but we need a ton of training and endorsements to do the same thing. I back a 48 foot liftgate up 20 to 25 times every day. I feel I am qualified to say that normal people shouldn't be allowed to back up trailers, let alone pull them since there are professional over the road drivers who can't even do it very well...
