Correction : There's a major fault line in New Jersey called the Ramapo Fault, which stems from the Appalachian mountains, and there are at least five smaller fault lines under Manhattan island
They can happen anywhere in the world. The Madrid fault is a pretty bad one that acts up every once in a while.

How did the Ramapo Fault shift the Tri-state area and the Taiwanese in the Far East within a day? I find this very unusual because most natural earthquakes occur in the same area OR a nearby vicinity, shifting other teutonic plates, etc. These two earthquakes occurred on opposite sides of the earth. Could it be that they were two (2) separate earthquakes? (And not one major earthquake?)
@@lindaliang3825 The gogirian calendar says it's the year 12,024. Catastrophic events supposed to happen ever 10,000 years so we'd be about 2,000 years behind schedule ....Sounds stupid but it my mental illness.🤔

An old 85 year old doctor I worked for in the early 2000s said in his lifetime we here in Boston would see a major quake. We thought he was wrong on that. We get small quakes infrequently. He said the east coast’s infrastructure will be what makes it deadly. He passed at 100 without seeing one.

@@gohawks3571 no saving us for that up in New England. Old old buildings and worse bridges. I woke from a small one and saw my water swaying on the nightstand. We get a lot of tiny tremors no one feels. The one that happen way way back down south changed landscape forever. I’m 50 and hope not to see a big quake in my time 💯🙏🏻

But your buildings were designed to handle that. In NYC the office towers collapse free fall into nothing after a couple hours of office fire.
But Japan knows how to build for it. I don't totally know the East coast, but I imagine the major thing aside from fire that buildings are designed for is hurricanes. That's a different force than earthquakes ☹️

To my friends on the west coast. If we had a hurricane or tornado, we would act like it was a very big deal. In Florida when hurricanes happen it needs to be a significant one for people to evacuate. I would be freaked out if a tornado touched down in San Fransisco. Would we want people on the east coast to be mocking us and laughing at us? Why are people so mean and hateful? We are all neighbors. Be kind.
In comparison it was rather small. Better be stronger than that in case something really bad happens is what people are trying to say.
But the northeasterners were mocking Atlantians when they had the snow storm years ago.
No one should be mocking anyone when an unusual event happens to them. I've lived through several earthquakes and would never make fun of someone experiencing one. It's an unsettling feeling along with the trailing aftershocks. I'm glad to hear that not much damage was done. Hang in there. :)

Some of these comments are so idiotic. We never have earthquakes here. It was plenty big enough that everyone felt it. We are lucky there may not have been much damage, but we are not "crying," or, "babies," to report on it. Give me a break.
Soo true, Earthquakes shouldn't be taken lightly. And even in today's world, there are no early warning ⚠️ signals. Stay safe. 💛 As far as the California comment, not all Californians are use to earthquakes. California is a huge state and eastern California hardly ever feel earthquakes, but that's not to say it won't happen 😉 I am sure my family who live in eastern California would be 😨

My building (which is almost 100 years old, and on a hill, shook like crazy! Because earthquakes are very rare in this area (especially of this magnitude), I thought maybe part of my apartment building had just collapsed because of all that rain for the past few days.

I was sitting in my recliner with my dog in my lap when all of a sudden I felt my chair fall from underneath me, almost like a falling feeling, and all the windows in my house suddenly started shaking. This lasted for around 15 seconds. Freaky stuff. Sullivan County here.

I felt the earthquake here in South Jersey, approximately 1-2 minutes after 10:23, when it started. Very minimal, but you felt your body and floor shake.

I’m in West Jersey and we get a lot of heavy dump trucks rolling down the road here and I initially thought it was that. After my windows were shaking and the floor was doing the same I immediately thought it was an earthquake. Lasted about a half minute. Very scary!

As I sat behind my desk at 10:23 a.m. that day, it felt like the Cyclone rollercoaster just finished it's run and was pulling into the last stretch of tracks.

I felt it today about 10:24 brooklyn l was at school and the whole class started Shaking from my leg too some student on the first floor even run out but it was just about 5 second it went away too one was hurt but it was the first time this happened on me so l am now really scared about it but it all right.
I live in New York so I felt the waves of it, but I was in school while at lunch. I don't know if my eyes were playing with me, but I saw my bag of chips shaking a bit. 👀 I felt it at 10:30 am!

We are in the area of the globe least subject to severe earthquakes!!! The thick, unyielding, mica-bearing bedrock under Manhattan is called "Manhattan schist". Any home damage would be on homes where a simple wind might do the same or more damage. Now people in badly constructed, not to code or fragile buildings from decades or a century of neglect, will try to collect money or get government money as in from our taxes! All kinds of non-geological people don't know what in the hell the reality of this area is and will try to exploit it for their own financial gain!!!
