I bought one j45 new in 2012 September and I didn't have try 4 to find a great one like many say on forums. They pulled a brand new on from the back and I was blown away and within 5min of playing it I bought it and love it every time I open the case.
I have a J-45 which I bought new in 2012. I'd been looking for a good acoustic for some time and tried Martins and Taylors as well but this one did it for me. I had to lower the saddle a fraction as the action was a bit higher than I like, but it's a beautiful guitar with a well-balanced sound and it just gets better with time.
@@samlynes7015 I got a luthier to sand down the saddle and it made all the difference. You might need to adjust the truss rod too but that's a job I'd leave to an expert. I also moved down to a set of 11s as I play a lot of Blues and I couldn't bend the set of 12s that were originally on the guitar.
Keep that guitar man it sounds good. I can tell by the way you're playing it that it's meant for you. I have a Martin d-18 I've had for 30 years. I have an emotional attachment to it. You're playing this guitar the way I play my Martin. Don't sell it Jeremy.
I just had a 1949 J45 refreted, neck reset, new bone nut, new bridge and saddle. Also had a couple internal braces glued back into place. Sounds great.
I'm currently having my 1946 a neck reset, and action lowering, and bridge repairing My 1968 has had new bridge, Nut, conversion of bridge to standard, and refret, and now a fret dress.
Like this, man. I have been using Aluminum Bronze EB strings for a couple of years and they have made my Martin 000-28ld sound awesome!! So glad you used those on this as I am in the market for either a J-45 or a Hummingbird and really wondered what they’d sound like with those strings. Think I’m sold on the J-45 thanks to this video. Thanks dude!
When I got my J45 I played a few other guitars in the shop first, Martin, Ovation, Yamaha, Takamini. When I tried the Gibson J45 the sound was so much better than all the other guitars by some distance, I knew it was the one for me. When the shop owner came over I told him how the J45 sounded so much better. He said "Ah yes, Gibson's have a soul".
I will eventually sell all 7 of my guitars and two amps ( Princeton and Boss Katana) for a J-45 when they put me in a home. That is one beautiful guitar. They cost up to $,.500.00 here in Oz. Lovely guitar. Congrats!!
Funny you posted this. We've got a 2017 j45. After Gibson's recent debacle we had a conversation about trading it for a d28 but decided to hold on to the j. We even thought about taping over the headstock but nah. It's such a beaut. Your video about this was timed well because it further supports our decision. (We know we've been weird with you in the past but that's just us being silly - we really love your content so thanks again)
Great playing on this demo of the J45.sounds really sweet . The Gibson just get better with age. My 2015 J35 is very similar to yours with the EB strings and I found these strings are the most musical for my Gibson.
Great video man! I was at the recently opened Sam Ash store in Jacksonville Florida this past weekend. I've been wanting a J45 for some time. They had a Studio and two Standard bursts; one with a cutaway. I actually like the darker tones; but after playing all of them for about an hour, both my brother and I thought that the Studio was the best sounding guitar of all; and that includes a $3,800.00 Hummingbird! The Studio was louder and clearer than the others. Go figure. This is typical is guitar world though,so the search goes on! I bought my daughter a Fender CD140SCE BK back in '08 from Guitar Center. At $250.00 it was the best playing and sounding guitar in the room under $600.00. High quality from top to bottom and never goes out of tune. I try to stick with American Made; but it is what it is.
I got my first Gibby J45 a couple months backs. Some days I love it some days I don't. being a Martin guy this Gibson will take some getting used to. But I do like it just to compliment my Martin, for something different if anything else. It finger picks extremely well is one benefit.
You just blew up the challenge in the best way possible! You still need to get that D45... but to get a custom... my man! That’s awesome!! Maybe that will be my next challenge
Hi Jeremy although post of the J45 is now 2yrs ago I still feel I'd like to put my pennyworth of thought in, I have been fortunate over a life time of hard work to own many of the very best in acoustic guitars and still have some beauties, I've had a number of the flagship Martin D45 and felt I'd reached the pinnacle of a Martin Dreadnaught however after using them for a while I realised the holly grail is not all what it seems don't get me wrong the D45 is a wonderful guitar but I let them go and moved on the point of my post is although in desirability a Martin D45 is your end game with all its glorious abalone I found myself switched completely the other way and absolutely love the Gibson J45 it is so understated in its appearance although still a classic ... the bottom line is the Gibson J45 is no plain Jane its a killer of an acoustic guitar and sound wonderful.
Hi, I agree with you. I have a 2016 Gibson J-45, a 2017 Gibson J-15, a 2018 Gibson J-35 and a 1968 spruce top LGO that I X braced. They all sound amazing. There is nothing I like better than the sound of a slope shouldered Gibson.
Yes, there is a lot of variation. The good ones are sold very quickly, and the “dogs” hang around the store for a long time. Naturally which are what most people are able to pickup and play. This doesn’t do Gibson any favours. But the good ones are truly amazing. Edit: Don’t buy acoustics online, because you’ll get the stock that’s been hanging around for a while.
I tried one of these today [or something very like it]. A good solid guitar and nice , muted sort of sound. It had the characteristic Gibson neck quality: with heavy strings and high[ish] action - but hardly any strain required to play it. To achieve that seems to be a sort of magic trick on an acoustic.
i like videos that are full of information like info on gibson martin whatever vintage guitars and differences and things to look for. thanks for the videos.
In 2018 I played j45s picked my favourite I love it Ive always had a strong romance with Gibson Les Paul’s too maybe soon a L- oo Really enjoy the content my friend
I bought my J-45 in 2021 at the time I could only find 1 shop within 300 miles of my home that had one in stock. Even the Gibson Garage in Nashville didn’t have one available. As soon as I strummed the first chord I knew I found my guitar.
Welcome to the wonderful world of slope shoulder Gibson guitars! Nothing else like them.....I would keep that one myself....my dream guitar is an advanced Jumbo...its the same thing only with different bracing and the longer scale....very powerful fun guitars....
I decided to get my dream guitar. Walked in to get the J-45, walked out with a LG-2 (for an extra $2g’s lol). But damn, I hear heaven from that thing. I even enjoy letting my friend play it because it sounds so good. Never buy an acoustic guitar online, they all sound very different. The good ones sell asap, and lesser ones hang around the store for a while. Ask the salesman which ones just came in, and take pictures of the serial number of the one you like before he takes it back to “wrap it up”. Just to ensure you get the exact one you want.
Hope all is well. try to see if you can find a Bob Thompson Guitar. You will love them. I have a BLK wood B/S with Adi top, and... WOW! Great video and series!!!
Yes that ones a cannon....I have a 2014 Gibson J-15 walnut first year for those guitars the Walnut is highly flamed and it’s a cannon too I put super jumbo frets on it and I think that doing it help with its projection

Very informative Jeremy! Rapidly becoming my # 1 guitar channel! Keep on!!
My understanding, and I bought a J-29 from around that period, is that Gibson named certain collections of specs, as a "2016" model. They then made those models for a couple of years or more. I have seen even 2018 serial numbers of a "2016" model. Seems to me they were focusing on possible bankruptcy, and those new non legacy HP models during this period as well. Not at all a bad thing on the 2016 models though.
I've had two relatively recent J-45's, and really tried to like them to no avail. I tried different strings, tusk bridge pins, yadda yadda, and they had no ring to them at all. Usable for doubling a rhythm guitar track and that was about all. No use solo at all.
Hello, I have a brand new J45. My low and high e strings seem to slip off the freatboard easily above the third fret. Does that happen to you as well? I love your review and the sound of that guitar ! Cheers
Check the spacing in the nut and maybe the saddle. If the nut is too wide it could cause that to happen. That’s rough. Did you buy it from a good shop?
Either you are setting up your recording stuff differently or this guitar may be the one you need. Let me suggest you go through some of your previous videos and listen to this guitar compared to other premium acoustics. The tone is even, the volume very nice and it just plain sounds as if this thing is a part of you. I know what it’s like to dream about something so much you don’t want to settle for anything else.... but... this thing is like another appendage. Just thought I might put a word in on this guitars behalf because that’s the way it seems to me and I’m a Martin kind of guy. Anyway, do the listening test and see what you think. Don’t throw away the perfect to search for the unobtainable.
I believe Gibson are making the best guitars right now. Look through the fog of whiners lead by drama/subscriber hungry RUclips celebs and be surprised to see the beauty of a Gibson iconic guitar
I’ve Owned many Epiphones and loved them, but they just don’t stack up to a USA made Gibson. All this drama generates views and revenue for these RUclips people. I used to hate in Gibson since 2015 but after I tried out a traditional and a 58 custom reissue my mind was blown away. I’m a huge Gibson fanboy now despite the recent “play authentic” crap which does bother me a bit for those who really can’t shell out the money on a Gibson, doesn’t mean you should hate on it.
Markonefifteen nicely put. The drama thing is ok I see the purpose of it for you tubers but I respect authenticity, truth and keeping it real far more then any of that. I have nearly 20 good guitars . Just bought a 2019 Gibson SG HP and it sounds and feels unbelievable.
Oh that's cute you think it is still Gibson guitars it's not. Just cause some one buys the name does not make it Gibson. Gibson ended along time ago get over it. Enjoy your crappy KKR Guitars , Juszkiewicz Guitars, and Norlin Guitars. The Gibson spirit died when CMI sold Gibson to Norlin.
Thanks for the cool video. The only suggestion I have is to get a better microphone and get it up close. From that distance, the guitar didn't sound good to me (even though I'm sure it sounds great in-person). Please do more of these videos but get some microphone that you can either use as a Boom Mic above the shot--or something right in front of you on a tripod.
Thanks for the demo! I know this comment is a few years old, if anyone is gonna keep/buy a gibson, the present day is the cheapest you'll get brand new cause my experience, the price will not go down or go on SALE! I recommend not to wait, figure a way to finance or whatever.
Lovely sounding guitar, great playing and I like that you kept the cameo from your kid at the end. RUclips can be way too sterile and staged! Whether you keep it or not, you found a cracking instrument there dude...congrats.
I want to buy a j45... how do the new gibson j45s compare to the vintage ones from back in the day. Would you recommend these new ones or should I spend more and get an old one??
Then, as now, they’re all over the place. It’s hard to say either way. Some old ones are wonderful and some aren’t, same is true with newer ones. The guaranteed turds are from 1969 until early 90’s.
I'm glad your J-45 intonates well. I had one for a few years and I could never get it to play in tune all the way up the neck. Those cowboy chords sounded glorious though!
Hurrah some good news for Gibson! My own experience of a new J45 didn’t concur unfortunately, glue poking out under the bridge/binding had a gap near the strap pin/excessive forward bow in the neck an a faulty pickup. Couldn’t care less about the cosmetic issues, but the neck was too far gone. Had it 4 days then back to the dealers for a d-18. Wouldn’t swop my 59 335 for anything though!
I think mine needs work. I have a Gibson SJ200 that is a dream, and a J-45 that I bought new last year that just seems off. High action, intonation off. I should probably just bring it to a pro for setup, but the cost of these new would lead you to believe that they would be perfectly setup already.
Jeremy I'm also considering the recording king Raj 126. I've read it's a fantastic avordable nod to the j45. I'm not entirely sure if it's the right tone for me. I fingerpick with my nails. The dirty 30,s make a great sound. Is the j45 an all round guitar? It seems used in rock a lot but still has a throughty mid range tone that I like. I'm also considering the RoT16. I'm a big fan of ooo guitars. The Martin ooo18 is nice. I'm buying from an official RK dealer so I know there guitars are good build ones. Do u have a favourite RK?
Before you decide to keep the J45; have you tried a Martin D18 ?, you may like the D18 more. Both guitars have very similar specs, and both have been used in so many recordings.
Is there a guitar store in the future? “Jeremy’s Rare Guitars”! Do you have an opinion on Martin authentic series as opposed to vintage? I played an OM-28 authentic the other day and it was amazing! I just don’t have anything to compare it to as far as vintage goes for the same price point. Thank you and love the channel.
Jeremy Sheppard thank you! I too am in search of a dream acoustic guitar and will continue to hunt for what I want. I’m going to have the chance to go to norms next month and will hopefully get a better idea of what I’m looking for.
The Songwriter is a joy as well. I actually went into my guitar shop to buy a D-28 or D-35 but fell in love with the Gibson.
I bought one j45 new in 2012 September and I didn't have try 4 to find a great one like many say on forums. They pulled a brand new on from the back and I was blown away and within 5min of playing it I bought it and love it every time I open the case.
Bozeman has been a consistent bright spot in Gibson manufacturing since around 1994 when Ren Ferguson got things on track. Nice guitar, nice playing!
The J45 is the best ruclips.net/video/kU0L5jJqXbQ/видео.html

how did you lower the action? Just you just sand down the saddle? I picked one up last year and find the action to be way too high...

2016 was a good year for Gibson acoustics. I picked up an LG2 American Eagle 2016 in February and it's really special.
2016 was an amazing year for ALL Gibsons in general.
I've got a 2016 as well. It's awesome. I did have it refretted though.

That's a good sounding Gibson! HOLD ON TO IT OMG 😭❤️
I see you playing some good ol dashboard!
Goodnight that thing sounds good! I'm looking for my first "good" acoustic guitar and this one is definitely on the list.
I got my first Gibby J45 a couple months backs. Some days I love it some days I don't. being a Martin guy this Gibson will take some getting used to. But I do like it just to compliment my Martin, for something different if anything else. It finger picks extremely well is one benefit.
Same story here. I try to love my J45, but it's only okay to my ear. I'll never buy another acoustic online.
My 1991 J45 is a superb instrument. It has opened up and can be as subtle and sustained as it can shake the house.
Beautiful sounding guitar! Dig the Isbell song at the end
Daniel Horsley yes, Elephant is a killer song
Tony Pelecastro riff
Amazing content man. Keep it coming. I started going on some hunts and found a lovely 62 Gibson 335. It’s the best ES I’ve played.
62 Gibson 335!!!! What finish?! A cherry 64 like Clapton played for a while is on our bucket list.
You just blew up the challenge in the best way possible! You still need to get that D45... but to get a custom... my man! That’s awesome!! Maybe that will be my next challenge

Thanks for bringing guitars and friendship to my feed. Yes to demos :)
Love my Gibson !
Love this channel, great review, sounds so rich! Fantastic player to boot!!!!
I love Ernie Ball acoustic strings the aluminum bronze is my go to strings from now on to my guitars. Not only a great strings it’s also dirt cheap!
This J45 is beautiful and hope you got this one Jeremy!
Hi, I agree with you. I have a 2016 Gibson J-45, a 2017 Gibson J-15, a 2018 Gibson J-35
and a 1968 spruce top LGO that I X braced. They all sound amazing.
I think you are doing the guitar a disservice with your string choice.
Try D’Addario EJ-16’s (12 to 53) and I doubt you will be looking for a Martin D-45.
after the string change. There is nothing I like better than the sound of a slope shouldered
Gibson.
Agreed Ken! I have a 2017 J35 ( Great guitar) and see an advanced Jumbo in my future!
I've played several Gibson J-45(s) over the years and all but one have been dead sounding. I'm glad to see that you have found a J-45 that you like.
Yes, there is a lot of variation. The good ones are sold very quickly, and the “dogs” hang around the store for a long time. Naturally which are what most people are able to pickup and play. This doesn’t do Gibson any favours. But the good ones are truly amazing.

Keep it!
awesome review man !
j45 rocks - coming from a martin guy
Very nice review. Love that guitar and really like the scale length.
i like videos that are full of information like info on gibson martin whatever vintage guitars and differences and things to look for. thanks for the videos.

Just love the honesty of your work
Talk more about the specs, and how to adjust and set up for different issues .. buzzes, warp necks, intonations, etc, anyway, thanks
My favorite guitar playing my favorite artist (Jason Isbell). Thanks for the great video.
Hi Jeremy, have you ever come across Gibson j185......i bought a 2013 sunburst one, I'm loving it, a vintage one costs a lot.
Has any of the spec changed in the 2020 models? Thanks
Got a 2020 and it’s the best guitar I’ve ever owned..
Welcome to the wonderful world of slope shoulder Gibson guitars! Nothing else like them.....I would keep that one myself....my dream guitar is an advanced Jumbo...its the same thing only with different bracing and the longer scale....very powerful fun guitars....
What song is that you were finger picking at first in the video ? Love the videos new subscriber looking forward to newer videos and hearing back !
this Gibson sold me on my next acoustic guitar , i love the sound just amazing

Got mine in march. Its just perfect. I'm a Brit but this baby is the sound of the USA 🇺🇸♥️🇬🇧
Sounds freaking great.
Yes that ones a cannon....I have a 2014 Gibson J-15 walnut first year for those guitars the Walnut is highly flamed and it’s a cannon too I put super jumbo frets on it and I think that doing it help with its projection

Hi ..I went buy Acoustic guitar from Amazon, any advice? .. and I like that one on video
I wouldn’t buy from amazon. Reverb.com is best.

Should do a guitar lesson video on that finger picking part at 2:06. Can’t find it anywhere and that sounded amazing !
That's a song called When the morning falls, I will try to do a lesson/explainer video.
Heard that Jason Isbell you played! Sounds great
Hi mate, awesome video! What exact model is this one? Sounds perfect for me!
J45 Standard
WOW! Great sounding guitar! Could somebody please tell me what was the first piece he played at 2:04. Thank you
"I will praise him still" by Fernando Ortega.
Jeremy Sheppard thank you so much! Love ur videos btw
EXCELLENT VIDEO
HELP…
What is the NAME of that fingerstyle blues progression you played starting @3:30 ?
It is great!
Please let me know.
I would keep it
Thanks for the demo! I know this comment is a few years old, if anyone is gonna keep/buy a gibson, the present day is the cheapest you'll get brand new cause my experience, the price will not go down or go on SALE! I recommend not to wait, figure a way to finance or whatever.
Thank you, nice demo ! What song is that at 6:14 ?
Thanks! It’s something I have played for years, it’s vaguely inspired by “Sweet Illumination” by Shane & Shane.
Classic J 45 punch. Kicks right through my computer speakers. Is it the GOAT? It comes damn close.
Great playing!!!
Lovely sounding guitar, great playing and I like that you kept the cameo from your kid at the end. RUclips can be way too sterile and staged! Whether you keep it or not, you found a cracking instrument there dude...congrats.
Don’t get rid of it its a sweet guitar!
I just bought one a month ago! Freaking love it! What song do you play at 4:23? Sounds beautiful!
Love it! That song is "All Creatures of our God and King" by High Street Hymns
Sounds pretty damn good to me
I'm glad your J-45 intonates well. I had one for a few years and I could never get it to play in tune all the way up the neck. Those cowboy chords sounded glorious though!
Totally agree.
Your editing skills are getting fleek. Great job
Thanks, hombre.
I think mine needs work. I have a Gibson SJ200 that is a dream, and a J-45 that I bought new last year that just seems off. High action, intonation off. I should probably just bring it to a pro for setup, but the cost of these new would lead you to believe that they would be perfectly setup already.
Love that demo! How do you find this stacks up against a songwriter?
Different guitars Different sounds its what you want have both if you can afford it
Yay a positive Gibson video.
What song is that at 3:30? Sound great!
12 bar blues with Travis style picking.
Love it
Cool merci
I sold my j45 2020 i miss this guitar is amazing/ last week i got 2016 good deal i wil never make this mistake again /you can’t go wrong with j45
J45 is like a more dynamic D18. Has more bass. Don’t know RK’s well enough to have a favorite.
Thanks Jeremy.
Before you decide to keep the J45; have you tried a Martin D18 ?, you may like the D18 more. Both guitars have very similar specs, and both have been used in so many recordings.
I have! I’ve owned many D-18’s and think they are better than most every Martin. What’s your preference between mahogany and rosewood?
@@JeremySheppard mahogany
Awesome guitar! Keep it. 🙂
They are very different. The Vintage are the best “new” martins and the authentics are amaaaaazing. But they’re considerably more expensive.
Jeremy Sheppard thank you! I too am in search of a dream acoustic guitar and will continue to hunt for what I want. I’m going to have the chance to go to norms next month and will hopefully get a better idea of what I’m looking for.
Was that a bit of Jason Isbell - Elephant I heard in there lol
Sounds nice!
Does anyone know the song at 2:45? I've seen it played in so many demos and I still dont know the name.
Needs a wider nut width for me
tempted to keep it? Who lent you the guitar?
Is there a Gibson acoustic that's the same size or similar specs as a martin OM model?
That’s a good question. There’s not a direct comparison. Maybe the J185? L-00 is like a Martin 00.
What music is that? oops that was the ad music
@6:57 is that Elephant?
You have great taste, good sir.
Yup
I love your demos and I think you're really cool just started watching you in the last 6 months
