  • A major project to help columbine students move forward is halfway complete. Crews have been working to replace the school's library with an atrium.
The atrium opened up the cafeteria ceiling - eliminating the sealed-off, second-floor library where 10 of 13 Columbine victims were murdered in the April 1999 massacre.

Let’s not forget that the school wanted to just do some minor repairs of the bullet/bomb damage and stains and get right back to school. It was the victims’ parents that banded together and demanded more changes be made. This caused the students to finish the school year at their rival school Chatfield while this was being done. It’s amazing they were able to do this instead of nothing but yes I agree it would have been better to rebuild the school.

You can’t erase what happened and though you get rid of the physical floor of the library where the bodies laid after they were shot the spots still exist you’ll just point at open air where it once was and where their bodies were... the walls that encapsulated and once witnessed that horror are still there still looking upon a vacant floor where once all happened they still remember.... because changing the space won’t change what once happened!!!

They weren't trying to erase history. Have you ever been seriously traumatized by something? Seeing or even smelling a trigger can be crippling. They did not want those students to have to face an area if the building everyday where they almost died. I'm glad it was torn down.

In my opinion they should have tore the entire school down and rebuilt another one with a new mascot name because 'rebels' isn't fitting after what happened especially considering 'Reb' was Eric Harris's gamer nametag.

Yeah back in the late 90s, us kids played online shooters via PC such as wolfenstein, counter strike, and Doom. Doom caught alot of heat for what Eric and Dylan did at Columbine because it was their favorite game and it excessively glorified murder and guns. In Eric's personal journal he wrote that the sawed off shotguns they chose for the killings were the same as the ones in the game. He even named his shotgun 'Arlene' after a character from Doom... Those boys were obviously very easily influenced and were clearly looking for any negative inspiration to motivate their evil intentions.

it never crossed my mind for the library to be removed after the shooting. but it’s actually a brilliant idea. and i think it helps with the healing. i wouldn’t be able to walk back in the same library knowing my fellow students died in there. it’s horrible to think about and horrible to be in that place where it all happened. may they all rest in peace, they didn’t deserve what happened to them but at least they’re in a much better place. 💜

To be clear.....the event was April 20, 1999. This video shows them REBUILDING the library, likely in 2000. (They had to process the scene as a crime scene. Then tear it down. Then get approvals to rebuild. Then get materials to rebuild. Then begin the rebuilding process. So yeah, this video likely IS in July 2000.)

Don’t scroll through the comments..not worth it. Unless of course you wanna see a bunch of dumbass comments from wannabe-edgy children with memes as their profile pictures try to say that the library shouldn’t of been torn down...pretending like they WOULDN’T have horrific flashbacks walking into the same room that they had just watched their friends getting murdered in. Sure, obviously we know tearing the library down wouldn’t erase history...but it would at least give the place a new look and help those suffering PTSD from the situation by giving them a fresh perspective.

  • @DreamBelief

Look, I'd be curious to visit it too, but my curiosity does not take precedence over the wellbeing of victims (including those who weren't injured) and their loved ones (victims in their own right), nor does it take precedence over the students being able to get a good education and access the important resources of the library.
There is no need to try and demonise people for being curious though or not believing it should have been torn down. We all look at things from different perspectives and backgrounds.

If you look at the layout the library should have been demolished and rebuilt on another wing of the school and where the old library would have been would actually be or could be an outdoor memmorial. Just my opinion.

eric and dylan were trying to demolish the library anyway, they hoped it would be destroyed. now that it is, they got what they wanted. not to mention the fact that the cafeteria is still there where other students died, and the room where the teacher died(unless they tore that part down too).
i still think they could’ve done a little more, but who am i to say anything about something that happened before i was born. at least still tried to make it better.
what happened was terrible. it shook the country, much like every other shooting, even the lesser known ones still make an impact not just on the people who lost a loved one or a friend, but everyone no matter who you are, where you live, or when you lived.
i hope that they stop i hope that government takes control and does something to stop gun violence. i hope they find a way to get rid of all the loopholes, i know daniel would appreciate that.

From what I've researched, the families of these victims does not want that Library to remains... and have other students walk into the very room where 10 of students were brutally murdered by Eric and Dylan. It's surreal enough that it is not quite comfortable knowing that room still exists, so they provide donations to remodel the whole thing... so that room where it all happened no longer exists for the better.
