Nature and Spirituality: The Sun in African Spirituality

As a child, I would see my African grandma address the sun whenever she had something that troubled her. Sometimes, it would a petition for justice. Other times, it would be her declaration of her innocence. What possibly could be the reason that she addressed the sun? What role does the sun play in African spirituality, that my grandma was appealing to?
