  • Most prospectors will be curious about how far their gold has traveled, so that they can give a guess as to where the gold was originally formed. Perhaps there is a valuable pocket of gold nearby. The gold which is angular and rough probably has not traveled too far and gold that is totally smoothed over like a jelly bean has likely traveled a good way.
Usually the majority of the gold eroding out from a single source will come out of the ground with a generally similar appearance. However, usually in a placer area the gold is not all coming from just one source. But if a lot of your gold is rough and angular, you may want to search for the source. Another indicator that you may be close to your source is angular quartz gold - the quartz shatters and pounds out of gold in a fairly short distance - a matter of a mile or two.
