- Robert Osborne was the host on Turner Classic Movies from its inception in 1994, in large part due to his deep and abiding love and knowledge of film. Osborne got his start working for Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. The ever-perspicacious Ball suggested that Osborne combine his interest in classic film and training in journalism, and write instead.

Died: March 6, 2017 (age 84) in New York City, New York, USA
To this day - I miss him and he will always be TCM. His interview with Betty Hutton is one of my all time favorites. Miss him. So humble. God rest his soul.
Wonderful guy, Mr Robert Osborne. He was a all around professional, who had great love and appreciation of cinema.
A wonderful, knowledgeable host. He treated actors from the Golden Age of Hollywood with kindness and respect. Miss him.
Robert Osborn was a class act and when the Shows provider for TV was free I was able to watch for free. Not sure when they started to charge for TCM and I cried. Now my generation is still being asked to pay. This doubly hurts because we old folks really are quarantined and I would love to see these again. Thank goodness some are on RUclips

I cried, did not know him personally, you just got use to seeing him, I love TCM. Mr Osborne shall be missed.
When certain personalities pass a whole era collapses. 100% this applies to Robert Osbourne.
I'm 33 years old. I grew up watching Robert Osborne - he was a teacher for me. I swear I was born in the wrong era, as a child I was always drawn to old films. And still to this day, I appreciate the stars of the Golden Era. I shock myself and other people when I share what I know about films and the stars of the 20th century. Things you wouldn't expect someone to know down to the least expected detail. I would have loved to be in Mr. Osborne's shoes - I live my fascination and appreciation for film through him. Continue to rest in peace, Robert Osborne. Thank you for your talent. ❤️
I felt the same way, that I was born at the wrong time and Robert Osborne was always there to introduce people of all ages to fine movies and all those personalities who made the old movies the best.
I just recently discovered that he had been in a relationship with one man for ~20 years until his death. I love that! He was like me: discreet and not "in your face" about it. He was such a gentleman.
Writing such a thing in the year 2020 is a pathetic vestige of bigotry that hopefully will disappear altogether one day. Yeah, props to Mr. Osborne for not giving you the vapors. Funny, you don't compliment straight people for being secretive.
I was fortunate to know Robert Osborne when I was part of the Industry. A lovely, funny, kindly, intelligent man.
I remember his interview with Bette Hutton. She was clearly not well and wracked with anxiety. He was so kind and reassuring, made her feel more comfortable and relaxed. I was very impressed by this compassion. It's no wonder he made such a success of his life. Kindness counts.
I felt the same way. I loved Robert Osborne because he brought wonderful films into our homes. He shared the history that I love so much and also brought these stars back to the limelight where we could again see and hear their voices. I miss him a lot.

Robert Osbourne with TCM made Millennials long for something they had never experienced.
Terrific film historian, so interesting, and incredible voice--classy, elegant, and warm man--he is irreplaceable--will miss him terribly.

Had no idea he had passed until today. I was not always a fan of the classics, but over the past five years I began to watch TCM more. I've seen Osbourne on television my entire life and feel as though he was almost like a sort of friend. He was a wise man who knew so much about film and all kinds of things. I will miss seeing his face and hearing his iconic voice introducing the greatest films of all time. R.I.P.

I've been watching him since it first aired, and as a researcher I looooove history about ANYTHING, & i looooove entertainment so I was engulfed by his life and stories he would tell about his days in Old Hollywood, they don't makem like this anymore he is truly missed Rip 1Luv.💋 S.N. He died 4 years ago today and has been missed every day since. I have watch TCM since it came on the air and Robert Osborne was the one who made that channel shine. His knowledge of movies and his commanding presence, plus his gentlemanly ways were a class act and cannot be duplicated. He is so very missed. TCM has changed a great deal since his death. Some of it good. Some bad. Frankly I like the way it was, but change has to come. Thank you Robert Osborne for the 23 years you were host! You were indeed a class act! We won't see you like again.

It was very thoughtful of TCM to make a documentary on Robert Osborne's life. I really didn't know anything about his career or personal life, outside of hosting TCM. Very informative. Thank you. :-)

Robert Osborne was a great gentleman. Two stars stand out: he interviewed Susan Hayward just before Susan was diagnosed with brain cancer. Osborne got Kim.Novak to open up during an extended interview and his friendship with Lucille Ball which changed Osborne!s career and life. RIP

Robert was the best, but not the first. Way back in the late 50's Bill Kennedy, an actor who did a number of Hollywood movies and TV episodes, turned his career into hosting an afternoon movie broadcast in the Detroit area. During the movie breaks, Bill told stories about his Hollywood days and the people he knew. Beyond that, he did interviews with various movie stars who came through Detroit, and these interviews were then aired during his show. He retired in 1983. No, this was not a national show but his format was very much the same as what Osborne created in the 1990's.
Bill would also give his audience a chance to ask questions

I watched Bill Kennedy back in the late 1970's. He was totally different Type Person Than Robert Osborne. He CERTAINLY did NOT Display Any of Robert's Warmth & Kindness. To be Totally Truthful, Bill Could Often Be Quite Obnoxious & Egotistical.
I Knew Many People, Who Couldn't Stand Him! I Only Watched Him Due To My Great Love Of Old Movies. Back in the day, He, also was a Movie Actor. He Appeared in "Mr. Skeffigan" With Bette Davis & Claude Reins, as One of Her Many Beau "Suitors". Including Near The Final Scenes, Where Her Once Great Beauty Has Dramatically Faded.
For someone as lively as Robert Osborne, I'm genuinely surprised my grandfather outlived him. They were the same age, but my grandfather is decrepit.
He made love the classic movies.

Was checking out TCM for the first time in a few years the other day. Still some great movies on display, but the whole feel of the network without Osborne just isn't the same. When I embarked on a quest to explore classic movies many years back, I was watching TCM for hours a day on a day to day basis, and Osborne was both like a personal guide to this wonderful under-discovered world, and almost a grandfatherly figure.
I'm grateful he was there with me on that journey, and he is still sorely missed.
Yesterday, Sept. 1st 2021, TCM updated its logo and production design. While I'm apprehensive about these changes, I know they reflect TCM's attempts at longevity. Today I'm watching old Robert Osborne clips to remember where it all started. I can only hope TCM continues to honor his incredible legacy.

I wish SOOOO much that TCM was offered as a single station on cable (sorta like Netflix) so I wouldn't have to buy the whole cable package (I don't have cable). I love TCM!!!!
I miss Robert so much and Alec Baldwin but Ben M. & the others with the strike, heck TCM is GREAT! I can't imagine why they refuse to pay these talented people for the new wave of streaming & as usual a corporate country (run & owned by conglomerates) the poorest of the public will pay! In the long run that's why the middle class is history!

It felt odd for me to see all those actors, whose movies I've enjoyed for so long, in their golden years. I'm so used to seeing them frozen in time in their films.
