- In the early morning hours of September 15, 2001, the Queen Isabella Causeway was struck by a barge and a tug causing several sections to fall into the Laguna Madre Bay. Eight lives were lost and for the 66 days between the collapse and it's reopening on November 21, 2001, a variety of watercraft provided the only means to reach South Padre Island. Reconstruction took a mere 50 days after a contract was signed. Location: Texas, Rio Grande Valley, eastern Cameron County over the Laguna Madre Bay.
I remember that day everyone thought it was another terrorist attack because it was 4 days after 911
I was in 3rd grade and I remembering the teachers saying it might have been a terrorist attack
Puro valle mamadas.
I was actually scared when i found out the bridge collapsed, i thought we were being attacked as well since it happened a few days after the events on 9/11. I was in first grade when all this happened:/
I knew someone who drove off that bridge, Harpoon Barry Welch. Had worked with him and gone surfing with him; he was a funny character. The older I get, the more people I knew are not around anymore. Guess one day it will be my time to go too. You never know when it could all be over.
Harpoon Barry was a mentor to me , he taught me to surf and gave me my first tattoo when i turned 18, his son was only 2 when i moved away from the island in 2000, I just learned that his surviving son William just passed on Dec. 25 2021 , i have no idea how , the ob only says that he passed away peacefully
It's terrible for these souls to have been lost and so close to the tragedy of 9/11.
that day i was going to the beach cause it was my birthday that day until my parent's turned on the tv around 5'o in da morning and we saw this on the news and all my love goes to all people who lost there life in this tragy day i'll never forget this :'(
A good friend of mine and his wife were 2 of the people that died that night.
harpoon barry tatooed me. RIP.STILL REMEMBER THE DAY HE TATOOED ME
I was so excited to go to south Padre Island when I was younger and my dad came home and told me that the bridge collapsed and I was so shocked and surprised I was only little at the time
RIP Harpoon Barry
Yo vivía en Brownsville recuerdo un muchacho de Whataburger que murió salía de su trabajo y no se dio cuenta que el puente había sido destruido instantes antes
i was there on the beach when it happened all i saw was the dust, concrete, blood, and a car falling.
Was it scary?
@@brianmendiola8133 It probably was I mean wouldnt you be scared??
Why did you see blood? The people in the cars drove off the edge and into the water in their car.
yeah barry did my tatoos...
I remember crossing the bridge all the time as a kid and I was only four months old when it happened gosh it feels so long ago
I live there my mom was gonna have me good I wasn’t there PORT ISABEL AND SOUTH PADRE ISLAND IS THE BEST!!!!
I live an hour away...
@morgmagg Barry was my brother in-law god how we miss them both always in our hearts
Barry was a good friend of mine and a great guy
Barry was my mentor when i was a teen , he taught me to surf , gave me my first tattoo , taught me to bungee jump , I just learned that William passed , he was only like 1 or 2 when i left the Island in 2000 , I hate to ask this but how did William pass , if you don't want to answer i understand
I just cross that bridge with my family this weekend. I'm not afraid of heights I just don't care for them and the thought of falling 80 feet freaks me out
I was literally on this bridge a couple years ago and i didn't realize how dangerous it was.
It was struck by a barge it wasn't a structaul failure. Anything getting hit by a multi ton ship at speed will break
I was in Laguna Vista when this happened, we all thought we were being hit because 9/11 had just happened a few days before. Rest in Peace!
i was 4 years old when it happened, i remember seeing the bridge like that so sad that this happened.
I Live An Hour Away From There!!!!!!
Me too!
@@kaitlyn4358 Same!!!
RIP Harpoon
He was a good friend of mine, he was a great guy and is deeply missed.

The part I have not read is the story of the person that pilot the vessel that struck the bridge. Was some one else other than the captain in control of the vessel?
You can read the findings of the Queen Isabella Causeway Allision here: www.dco.uscg.mil/Portals/9/DCO%20Documents/5p/CG-5PC/INV/docs/documents/BrownwaterV.pdf
People thought it was another terrorist attack
Which that means why a big boat
I live 40 minutes away im 9 my parents take me alot
Henry Trevino u already said dummy
I’ve been across it the best thing is Laguna Madre is shallow about 3 ft deep except the ship Channel and guess where they went in the deep end but there were survivors can you imagine middle of the night
That day at night well I was on the bridge once I Saul the boat I backed up I reverse my car and I went back home
Woah really?
I live there i was terrified
my dad was on one of the coast gaurd boats and claims he helped
Coast Guard didn't help during the rescue. They made matters worse for those that were injured. Joshua Moroles interviewed one of the 4 fishermen that saved all of the survivors
Driven this bridge many times. Not even half as bad as the pictures suggest.
I live there
