There definitely needs to be more videos on Compressor out there. Thanks for this one Dylan! I usually use it to rip audio from several interviews that I've filmed to then pass along the audio files to my audio editors to clean up.
Can we please back up even further and do a video on WHAT is it and WHY it's used? Like the video that comes BEFORE Compressor 101? I've watched most of this video, but it's lost on me as I'm such a neophyte with it. When I hear "compressor" I think "make smaller" as in making large videos "smaller" in order to upload faster to YT...but have yet to find that to be true.
Good question. How it was once explained to me was. Original video format is a strong coffee. Compression adds milk for those who like it weak but you can add coffee anytime don’t think compression = smaller. Think compress\ decompress if unsure right click file >Get info and at the bottom is Encode Selected Video Files
Was trying for hours to shrink some iPhone 4K HDR videos in size to save some disk space with ffmpeg on a Windows PC, but preserving the HDR meta info was a complete PITA and didn't work ultimately. Then I remembered that I also have a Mac and Compressor, and after watching this video, it was a matter of minutes to shrink those videos while preserving HDR as well as all metadata. ffmpeg is definitely a fantastic tool (it's also used in handbreak), but for Apple video formats, Compressor seems to do a better job. So yeah, thanks for the video! Compressor always felt like a mystery to me because I always overlooked the settings icon in the top right corner lol
Great video Thanks. I’ve been contemplating Compressor but how much is it an advantage over what’s in FCPX’s export capabilities. Thanks again for your hard work on all the tutorials you do. It’s definitely helped me with Motion and FCPX. Cheers.
Excellent job. I picked up quite a few things here. I've owned Compressor for a couple of years but I've only started really using it in the past 6 months. I love it now and with these added tips, the experience will be even greater. Thanks!
Been using Compressor since it first came out and you know the one feature I'd really like? Keeping creation and modification dates of the original file. I've only found one video converter that does that (Converter Pro), but it doesn't output H265 files that play nice with FCP.
super helpful video. I am however experiencing issues on making my custom export settings visible on Final cut. When create new export, on the Compressor folder/customs it shows 0 presets. Anyone else experienced the same ?
I have this application, but when I want to reduce the video size, I am surprised that the final cut is less size than this application. I hope you explain how to reduce the size of the video and not convert the format.
This is great, Dylan. question: I would like to take some ungraded, unedited SLOG 3 4k 10bit Sony a7Siii footage and downscale it to 1080p for archiving. Stuff I don't need, but might want for broll later. HD will be fine for this particular stuff. I want to do it in Compressor, so I can batch a few dozen of these things and get'em done. Would Compressor be my best choice? (I have a blazingly fast M2 Ultra) How would you tell Compressor to do this?
Holy shit, you just saved me HOURS of headache. For me, Final Cut was freaking out with stabilizing vertically oriented clips from newer Sony camera with the gyro info. Compressor can flip the orientation to horizontal right in the file itself before I even import it into FCP! BOOM, I just have to rotate in the edit but stabilization works perfectly. I cannot believe I didn't think of this or knew. I've been rendering optimized media, stabilizing in Davinci as a final step, or doing whatever annoying workarounds that take forever, and this just solved all that. So from the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU DYLAN!
@@FlowDefoe Unfortunately for whatever reason, Final Cut was not recognizing it when I do it in Finder, it still reads the orientation as the original, most likely because of the Gyro info embedded in the files. Compressor must be stripping that info from the clip and it works in my case. Might work for others in Finder but I've been losing my mind for weeks trying to find a full proof solution.
( Adobe Media encoder is no issue that same process and it’s working fine. ) I like apple compressor but for this issue I using adobe media for some work…
Wow! Awesome video. I'm very new and find all this difficult. I'm told there is a way to inject Metadata into a 360 video with compressor. Do you have a video or link you can refer me to?
Great video. However I set destination folder to source but my files render to MOVIES folder despite that? How can I set a bespoke output file name and destination folder to be the same folder that the master file is in?
Hello I cannot choose to transcode batch with multiple computers when sending final cut pro directly to Compressor Now I can only cluster render on final cut pro by first sharing files to a shared folder and then on the import compressor.
Exporting out of FCP/Compressor and then squeezing some more using Handbrake has been my go to process. I've tried various settings in Compressor to achieve the small file size but relatively great quality that Handbrake provides but just can't match it. Is there a way to do this?
I just had a client who needs a file that needs to be 30mb for some reason for streaming or something of a video I did. The videos is currently 75 mb and was basically instagram H.264 HD video. Is there an option in Compressor to see what the file size will be with the highest quality possible for the file size...? PS> Also when choosing an apple device why does it try an export ALL the iPhone size and individual files for each phone or device. I do not want to export 20 versions of the same file... Just want to compress one file. Not 20 versions...
So when u tick the video pass through it will keep the same codec video file when we import in? for exp. Importing Prores 422, it will export at Prores 422?
Maybe a stupid question: Do I need this? Does it give me any advantages compared to FCPX Export Settings? Been thinking about getting it, but just couldn‘t tell whether it‘ll be worth it.
FCP export settings can pretty much get you there, depending on your workload. If you have to edit a lot of videos, then sending them to Compressor while you continue to edit in FCP will definitely save some time/CPU. If you don't have to export multiple videos in multiple resolutions for one client, then you might not need Compressor. I use it to batch export audio from interview clips I've filmed so audio editors can clean it up, and I barely use it. But it is useful for that use-case, so I don't have to individually import video clips into Final Cut and then export them as audio only one at a time.
Latest version, 4.7 SUCKS ! No matter what i do, Compressor stops after 10 seconds. Spent WAY too much time on this BS. The send to compressor command from FCPX works fine and so does compressor but it just doesn't work when i use compressor on it's own. Thanks Apple ! Restart, re-install, tried it all.
Thanks for explaining the "droplet" thingy, it's incredible! What a timesaver for a regular use!

Had this program for years, this video has just made it more approachable 😂 cheers
I've used compressor for over 6 years fulltime and still learned stuff. well done
Great video! It completely changed my relationship with Compressor! Thanks for it!
So great Dylan, now I understand how to use it. Perfect! Thanks
Thank you once more. I used compressor, but now i start to understand compressor even more.
This video has been really needed for everyone using apple products
SUCH a helpful video and SUCH a great tool!
Excellent video! One that makes Compressor useful. I will subscribe. Thanks

All the audio settings look good, but I'd bump the sample size to 24 bits instead of 16.

you should be able to rotate it in the Finder, too. In column-view it's right under the big file icon.

Thanks 👍! Do you know how to export in.mp4 ?
Important question: Does compressor work without Final cut Pro purchased or installed on your machine.
In the built in settings are there ones that can export .mp4 with good quality?
Anyone know a perfect 1:1 export setting to use which produces the exact same file size in the end?

why is my start batch button grayed out?

Isn’t Compressor no longer available or am I confused?
