    thank you, great video. We have just installed a similar setup in our rehearsal room with singer, guitar, bass and drums and a Zoom L-20. But our guitar player wants his Marshall cab to be mic‘ed, so we get a lot of noise bleed in the voice & guitar mics. We haven‘t converted to IEM, so the bass amp produces additional „noise“. Great idea to have backing track mixed with the metronome click, will try that. Rock on🤘

    Hey Mika, this has been great for me to learn how to use my L20 for our five-piece band. Just wondering how exactly you patch in the Lexicon effects unit to your monitor/headphone mixes. Do you run the signal to and from the Lexicon via one of your stereo channels then just turn up this input in the sends from the channel strips to the individual headphone mixes? Many thanks. Have bought both Tremors and Mountain tones on my iTunes ...love them they are great!

    • @MikaFastfinger

      Hey there! We moved to Soundcraft Ui24 over 3 years ago so I had to try to remember our old setup with L12. We are 3 piece so I had to extra monitor oitputs free. I used those as aux sends for a) reverb b) delay. Lexicon has a dual fx mode so that made this possible. Lexicon signal was simply hooked to one of the stereo channels of L12. so the fx were mixed to our monitor mixes as any other instruments. Hope this helps! Thank you so much for your support! Great video man :) I'm just wondering, do you play always with headphones at rehearsals? Never got the real sound? (exept for the drums)
    If you do a life recording of a gig for example how do you deal with all the sounds the microphones are picking up? Any ideas how to achieve good gig recordings, we play with the same ammount of drum mic's plus 2 mic's for guitar amps plus 2 vocal mic's. thats 12 mics and everyone of them picks up (more or less) the sound of the whole band.

    • @MikaFastfinger
      @MikaFastfinger  3 года назад +1

      We’ve played at rehearsals with headphones on for the last 2 or 3 years. This suits our music well. I don’t miss the times when we rehearsed with amps and i had to wear ear plugs. it was hard to hear the details.
      Live, sure there’s leaking with all the amps aloud, but i never found it to be that hard to cope with it. On our case only drums will have that problem and mainly overhead mics.
      Live I’d still use my cabinet simulation box to record, monitor and to give the front of house live engineer a great guitar tone.

    Thank you for the great video! One thing that I don't fully understand though is how you connect the tom mics to the mixer. It looks like you are running the mics through separate pre-amps and from there into the stereo channels of the mixer. Do you have two pre-amps that have stereo outputs that you connect to two separate stereo channels? And if so, why aren't you using the two pre-amp slots that are still available in the mixer?
    I hope you know what I mean :)
    Cheers man.

    • @MikaFastfinger
      @MikaFastfinger  2 года назад

      Hey, thanks! The way i connected Toms to the mixer. Well, I didn’t mention why i did it like this because i thought it would just confuse a lot of people. Tried to keep the video somehow straight forward. But since you asked 😀 First of all the mono backing and click track took the last 2 mono mic channels of the mixer, we wanted to be able to adjust the levels and panning of these channels to our headphone monitors. Hearing click hard left and backing hard right would not work. So, the Toms mics were connected to two separate mic pre amps (could have been a 2 channel mic pre too) then those were connected to one of the stereo input we still had free. I decided to connect the toms like this because we didn’t have to monitor these tracks when playing but I still was able to capture the toms on on separate tracks. Not sure if this expanation can be followed. Anyways we already moved on to using Soundcraft Ui24r mixer so we don’t need to do such magic tricks anynore. After setting the new system, life is easier and sound is way much better! 👍 Cheers!

I record in L-8 or sometimes H4n and then take it to my PC and it sometimes wants me to format which will of course erase all the tracks, any help with this would be great. Hello! On monitoring inputs going from interface, to PC (DAW), to Monitors (Headphone, PA, Studio Monitors), is there a latency going to the monitors when you use Livetrak? I am planning to get the L-20 version of Livetrak and I am kinda afraid that there might be latency when we're recording. I wish to know if it's going to do well.

      Moi! No ainakin haasteita ilmaantuu kun Släpätään 😀 Kiitos!

    Thank a lot for this video! Based on this Im getting the gear to do the same set up with my band. One question, Do you always need the DI and the Virtual Cabinet? What if I have a guitar and a bass combo, can I plug them directly to the "Zoom Livetrak-12"? Thanks!

      @@MikaFastfinger Until now I was using 2 Inexpensive SM57 copies from Thommann for Overheads, Another one for the Snare and a 58 for the kick.
      I used the snare and kick signal to trigger Superior Drummer and mixed those in to balance snap. Then took the overhead signal into 4 separate channels for the stereo signal.
      2 for cymbals in which i used eq to cut off any freqs below 500 to prevent too much toms bleed.
      The other two I cut eh audio and leave only the parts where the toms are playing and eq and compress to keep most of the drum characteristics.
      It's a lot of work, but it yields a very nice "Live" sound. We are now about to buy a set of drum mics as we will be able to work with 16 channels. Until now we had only 8 channels to work with and as all of our material is free form live improvisation we don't like to add overdubs so everything has to be recorded in the moment. Our bass player uses 3 channels already. XD

      not stereo but multitracking, recoder every on separate tracks. kick, snare, overheads, bass, guitar… otherwise you cannot mix it afterwards.

      i’m not quite sure what you mean. on the SD card there’s folder where every recording can be found as separate numbered wav tracks. Then i just move and place the wav files to Cubase on separate tracks. Are you using the same Zoom L-12 mixer?

    hi guys I have a few questions..
    First, I live in a townhouse so my band does silent rehearsals with everything going direct to an analog mixer and from there usb out to my laptop using NCH mixpad. All our recordings always sound very flat and raw so I am guessing that is because of no room volume. I’m trying to figure out how to get more color or ambiance to the recordings.
    Two, Right now my usb output is only a stereo signal so I am not able to multitrack our rehearsals and wanted to see if there is a way to achieve that without purchasing expensive equipment.
    Thank you!
    Chuck

    • @MikaFastfinger
      @MikaFastfinger  3 года назад

      Our experience is that with headphone rehearsals ambience is higly important. Without it the mix balance feels always off. Get yourself some kind of Fx device, a second hand rack unit that does some ambience / room. You will not regret this, it will make your headphone jam feel and sound more like you play in a room or a venue. Cheap late ’90’s Lexicon, like the one we use here cost almost nothing.
      With your current stereo recordings, atleast what you can do now is add some ambience/room fx in the mastering. add it before the compression/limitlng. This can definetly help the recordings sound more natural.

    So, you record the sound through the mixing desk, how do you transfer that back onto the video?

    • @MikaFastfinger
      @MikaFastfinger  3 года назад

      use any video editor software (premiere, final cut, davinci etc). you will see the original video camera audio on timeline,. place your new stereo mix on another track and make sure it’s in sync with the original camera audio. next mute the original audio. export the video with the new audio and you’re done!

      For this type of thing Zoom L-12 does an okay job. Simple to use, in our use it’s always been solid and worked well. Great easy thing for s small band to get started.
      we just upgraded to Soundcraft Ui24r, it has more inputs. (I wanted to have 3 guitar channels and we can now have room mics as well), it can do a very fine mix on it’s own: channel strips, 4 effects all the groups and advanced routing... but it’s a complitely different thing and more complicated to setup (initially). You need to be a bit of a sound engineer to get behind it.
      But what is best for you, i don’t know about you and your bands needs. And i don’t know that much about all the options out there. Hope you find one that suits you!
