Hi Brother, Thank you for the awesome comment, learnt this technique from an old whiskey maker he just did 210l drums at a time filled with Charcoal. The neat thing about making your own is that the you can control how much filter action you have larger pieces less filtration smaller gives you more cleaning action.
This is a very well done video!!! Thank You for taking the effort!!! The only thing you didn't mention is you need to use lump charcoal not the brickettes. You did an excellent job of explaining about how the size of the particles of charcoal is important, one thing you might address is how to use a charcoal filter bed to finish your spirits. It should be done slowly to give the charcoal as long as possible to contact anything in the spirits you are trying to remove.
I know it would be easier just to purchase activated charcoal but this is a hobby. From start to finish it takes me one month to still a good liquor. Then I age it a year before I drink it. In the mean time, I need something to do to fully incorporate my hobby. Making charcoal to filter out my tails is something I can use. Thank you for the video.
good point. To take it further, think about gathering wood, building a retort and produce your own coal first. Not that hard if your neighbours far enough...
Hi Steve. Agreed to buy activated charcoal will be a lot easier, but with this technique you can control the amount of filter action by controlling the size of the charcoal
@@stevevet3652 no offence here... there are tons of videos showing build & use. Still wouldn't try it next to the neighbours porch or midsummer in the woods...
comparing the granules/pellets offered to buy with the variety in size you'll achieve in your own "production" I'm totally with Steve, it's about stretching the hobby. I appreciate the idea of "having the control over each step", but I doubt we can reach the same filter efficiency. Different size of the parts opens drain channels, leading fluid to pass instead of soaking. But thats only thoughts, I'm far from your practical experience.
we did this experiment in high school. put a piece of wood in the can heat it up then light the gases that come out of the hole in the lid. make your own charcoal..this was in the 60s.
Great video very well presented, often thought about BBQ charcoal, and you've answered all my questions. As we're approaching Autumn here in South Wales UK. charcoal is selling very cheap. Thanks again.
Baie dankie Beaver vir die wenke. Ek het in die verlede rooi warm kameeldoring kole in water gedompel, en so my eie houtskool gemaak. Dankie vir die idee hoe om die houtskool weer te hernu, om dit weer te gebruik.
Thank you for your videos. I've got my first batch of spiced rum in and it is still fermenting after four weeks, can that be right or did I mess it up?
A lot of people on the internet are spreading false information about activated charcoal, you cannot make it from scratch, you need synthetically produced calcium chloride to activate charcoal
I never even thought about residual oils and resins in the charcoal. Thanks for making this video!

@@BEAVERDIY That's so cool that you can tailor the charcoal size to what you want to filter like whiskey vs. vodka.
@@BeardedBored hey sir do you you filter all your spirits with charcoal or just sometimes?

You are a awesome teacher!
Thanks for this video. I've been contemplating doing a sort of DIY charcoal filter tube and have just started my research.
Awesome love your channel
Awesome, thanks Beaver! Great explanation.
Thank you,

We use to do it with wood chips to do that so cool,
Thank you Beaver
Another great video, like Bearded & Bored said I never thought about the oils in the charcoal.
Thanks for the information. I will use this.
Thank you for this!!!!
Thanks Beaver, great vid! Going to run some faints and re distill. Maybe get them to neutral.

Yet again #BeaverDIY blows my mind. I had no idea that the charcoal had to be 'prepared' first. Though it was just ready to go 🤦
lekker day is a SOUTH AFRICAN word, awe bra, thanks for the video
For us in the states we can only distill "water" if you catch my drift 😉 my still is on the way as I write this
Awesome welcome to creating the water of life.

Do you think using a ultra-sonic device during the hot water soak would make a difference in water penetration into the charcoal?
Thanks a lot man
No problem!
So the granulated charcoal I'm using from the brewing shop I can just boil that and dry it out and reuse it yeah🤔
Thank you for your videos. I've got my first batch of spiced rum in and it is still fermenting after four weeks, can that be right or did I mess it up?
Would distilled water be better than tap water? Curious.
What kind of wood do i burn to get charcoal?
can use this for air filter odors?
I live in an apartment. Can I microwave the charcoal instead? Is it safe? 😅
Would it also be possible to grill the charcoal on a gas grill?
Mooi man❤
Thanks
Is this what they call activated charcoal?
Boil the charcoal for 30 min???
My vrou sal my bliksem😂😂😂🍺🍺🍺
Why not just get a tin with a hole in the airtight lid and just make coals?
Baie interessant. Mens leer elke keer iets nuuts met jou videos.
Why don't youmake activated charcoal from scratch. It's very much the same process from hard wood on a coffee can on the fire.
A lot of people on the internet are spreading false information about activated charcoal, you cannot make it from scratch, you need synthetically produced calcium chloride to activate charcoal
HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF PEOPLE EATING CHARCOAL AND COAL DUST IS IT SAFE TO EAT OR IS IT HARMFUL TO A PERSONS BODY CAN YOU LEAVE ME A MESSAGE
