Yes kota stone is preferable as it is much faster and more reliable and doesn't need curing. The concrete slab work depends on the skill of the worker, steel quality, mesh quality, cement ratio, curing time, etc.
This technique was used on an old house I had to add a carport to in strathfield Sydney Australia.The outer walls were covered with chicken wire and barged like this to about 2 centimetres thick .The owner not being the first owner thought that the house was traditional brick veneer!I had to make sure to find the wood frame behind to attach the carport as the veneer of barged up chicken wired wall was not strong enough to attach anything to!The house must have been built when bricks were in short supply.

I think making pillars from aluminium profile and shelf of white marble is easy to make within 2 days and long lasting. Also termite free.
