Raids require a judge to sign off on a warrant. It was a raid because he had refused to honor a subpoena and they did not trust him not to provide or destroy evidence.

@@albertosillywhips7281 the reason for the search, which was broadcast by a wide variety of media across the globe, as well as confirmed by the White House and the FBI, is for official White House documents, including classified and secret documents, that Donnie illegally removed from the White House instead of turning them over to be archived, which is what the law requires.
He ASSumed that he owned those documents even though he had been told over and over that everything from his presidency must be archived. He ignored the law, failed to turn over the documents as required, and insisted that any attempt to retrieve them would be construed as a partisan "attack" rather than a simple law enforcement search for documents that he illegally possessed.

I hope the DOJ does everything strictly by the book and not let the case be dismissed because of a technicality. This search warrant is most likely regarding Trump's mishandling of classified documents, a lot of which he did not return when he was supposed to and the DOJ does not want to see the documents destroyed. Flushed down the toilet being a distinct possibility. Mishandling of classified documents is a felony, a criminal offense. A judge would not have authorized this search warrant to a former President's residence if there wasn't just cause.

Well, it has already been proven since 15 boxes have previously been handed over. The search now was to confirm if any secret and top secret material were stored in Trump's Mar-a-Lago. From what I've seen of Garland so far, he seems OVERLY concerned about being cautious, so he clearly had strong evidence to support seeking a court order for the search. A federal judge ALSO saw compelling evidence to sign off on the search. Hopefully the FBI found what they were looking for, which would not be good for Trump.
