This bus was destroyed in a serious accident in December 2012.
The Rheinische Bahngesellschaft AG Dusseldorf (since 2005 Rheinbahn AG) had a total of 23 MB articulated buses of type O 405 GN2. The buses (No. 6508-6530) were put into service in three series in 1996 and 1997 and replaced buses of type MB O 305 G and MAN SG 242 H.
The first series from the beginning of 1996 (6508-6514) had the old red-white Rheinbahn design, red seat covers with black stripes and dark gray handrails.
The buses had a ZF transmission
The second series (6515-6523) of the O 405 GN2 followed at the end of 1996 with the brand new silver-red Rheinbahn design. They were the first buses without the familiar red and white color scheme.
The interior trim and seat covers were gray, the handrails yellow.
The buses had a ZF transmission.
A third series followed at the end of 1997 (6524-6530). The buses could be distinguished from the second series by the blue seat covers and the Voith transmission.
The O 405 GN2 were located in several Rheinbahn depots. A large number of these buses were stationed in Dusseldorf-Benrath, as well as in Dusseldorf-Lierenfeld.
The MB O 405 GN2 were taken out of service between 2008 and 2013. They were replaced by MAN NG 323 and Solaris Urbino 18 III.
On the evening of December 19, 2012, a few weeks before it was taken out of service, the bus stopped at the "Am Hackenbruch" level crossing (DB route 2324) due to a technical fault. When the barrier booms lowered, the passengers and the driver jumped off the bus. A few seconds later, the bus was hit by a freight train whose class 185 locomotive derailed. A second freight train from the opposite direction drove into the rubble, the locomotives (2 x class 189) and some wagons derailed. A locomotive (189-065) slid down an embankment and destroyed a gazebo.
The freight train route between Düsseldorf-Eller and Düsseldorf-Rath had to remain closed until the afternoon of January 9, 2013.
In this accident, the two train drivers were slightly injured, the driver and passengers of the bus got away with the horror.
Bus no. 6525 was the second articulated bus that got stuck at the "Am Hackenbruch" level crossing due to a technical malfunction and was hit by a freight train.
On October 26, 1979, a Rheinbahn bus (No. 8303, MAN SG 192, built in 1975) suffered the same fate. Back then, too, all passengers and the bus driver were able to get out of the bus in good time.
