how does N change if it asked compounded quarterly / semi-annually? would i multiply by 4 or 2 or do you usually just multiply N as no. of years x 12?

It depends on the calculator you use. For example, the TI-nspire has N be the number of payments. Not necessarily number of years (unless of course you have 1 payment or compounding period per year, then N = years).
