  • Today, we're going to see if it's possible to plaster walls SUCCESSFULLY with 1 coat of plaster. I have made a video like this in the past but I've improved the method.
    Now, this is a very controversial topic but I'm not doing to to cause a riot amongst the traditionalists out there. I'm doing it because if there's a way to reduce the work load in plastering then I want to find it.
    It's a very tough trade and it's not great for anyone walking into it. So I want to find a more sustainable way to plaster...but is this the way.
    Check it out and let me know what you think! We'd love to hear from you so let us know what you think by commenting below. And please like and subscribe to our channel for more up to date ways to render and plaster.

    Thanks for watching. I'll see you one the next one.
    Cheers.

    I can put one thicker coat on and keep it on the wall. I’ve seen people do two coats and take loads off throwing it in bags. It’s all experience as long as the required thickness is on and you know how the plaster behaves in different situations. It can all be done. Put 5 coats on if you want

    Hi Blaine i did a domestic job with a site plasterer last weekend & he used a similar technique apart from we coated up then went back on with a second coat straight away,flattened then sponged.& got a fantastic finish......

    Haha, my old Tradesman when I left school was a lazy one coat man, and he worked for a huge building company as well.
    All it done was made it more difficult for me to learn and apply an even coat.
    Now I've been out the game for years I tried one coating a couple walls recently and It was a shocking effort! not gonna lie.
    Glad it was my own house and no one else's.
    Getting far better results doing it properly

    If people are one coating on site that does explain why quality of new builds is shite. Cutting corners , cutting out whole processes…
    If ur a not working on site always 2 coat. Your quality is all that matters. The last thing you want is customers calling you back because of cracking plaster because it’s too thin.
    Just stick to doing the job right.

    It can be a great method......especially in this weather 💯 I'm doing some really old walls at the moment which are sucking the life out of the plaster even with 3 coats of strong pva 😂 I'm doing 2 coats with the same mix though as if I was to do it traditional then by the time I've flattened down quickly and cleaned my tools then made another mix it'll be too far gone 😂 plastering is an amazing trade there's so many ways of doing everything 💯

    Controversial but it can work I’ve seen it done but ur right in that u do need to sponge it back in to life to then b able to flatten it that first coat always seems to pick up quicker than the second so if ur only doing one the sponge will liven it back up and buy u the time

    Im a big fan of mixing too much plaster, apply first coat wait for it to go a little bit. Knock the bit up in the bucket and 2nd coat with the same mix. Goes off quicker to speed the process up but gives the same finish as a 2 coat. Obviously you cant do it on bigger walls and ceilings but for smaller bits thats my go to.

    How long do you leave between flattening & sponge floating? And wouldn't it be better to use a long metal edge spat after sponging, to get a flatter surface & quicker results?

    Hi Blaine, loving all your videos mate! Been using an ox fine sponge float with mixed results, do you use a coarser sponge? And which brand would you recommend ? Appreciate all your knowledge sharing anyway 👍🏻

      First sponge float I used was fine, and I found it didnt dig into the plaster enough. Bought a course one and it made a huge difference.

    why do plasterers always build the walls out so far. I just knocked the plaster of a wall and some areas had 5cm of cement render and 2 cm of plaster, thats 7cm of room space. With the addition of tiles (1cm) and waterproofing and adhesive 0.5cm all around an entire bathroom it literally shrinks your room. can both your cement render and plaster coat be rather thin or should i skip the hardwall plaster when tiling?

    Would it be possible to create (or does anyone have a link to) a video on how to blend plastered surfaces. There are areas in my house which don't have a cut off but are too big for me to plaster in one go. It's mainly the walls parallel to the stairs where I can only think of doing it in two go's. Any advice is appreciated.

    You said one coat , weakens the set , a sponge float , really does weaken the set , sponge float and multi finish doesn’t go together, it’s not designed for that, sponge float,brings up the fat , in lime , there is no fat in multi finish

  • @christophersmith5606
    @christophersmith5606 Год назад

    Realistically no…1 coat isn’t advisable….too many variables in play and quality will more than likely suffer. 1 mix but 2 costs is a different matter….

    • @NiktheEnglishGreekCypriot
      @NiktheEnglishGreekCypriot 9 месяцев назад

      That’s the traditional way, lay it on then go straight back round and lay it down. Most people use the same mix for both coats, either by wetting it up (which can be a pain with lumps and going off like a rocket), or being quick enough to spread it before it’s going off

    british gypsum one-coat exists, much better to use that, it is thicker and stickier.

    Hi Blaine, I think in small amounts 1 coat is passable but when your doing big gauges I think 2 coats is always the safer/better way 👍

    I had a spell of it when I fell out of luv with the trade for a while and you av to skim all the joints and beads first or it don’t work and then when painted I noticed on the board joints the plaster had shrunk too much so no not brilliant just to save you half hour but I never sponged so went back to 2 coats and no comebacks

    You don’t do one coat simple as that not if your a professional tradesman

  • @frankiez7414
    @frankiez7414 5 месяцев назад

    I can do it without sponge floating. We used to use a plastic float in all angles and any bumps in the wall. It’s all about the timing , suction and amount of water and when. It’s all practice more than any trade.

  • @frankiez7414
    @frankiez7414 5 месяцев назад

    Jeez when are we going to catch up with the rest of Europe ?They use one coat plaster all the time. It’s a far nicer plaster to use and a far nicer finish. All the processes you are using are used on one coat.

    Ok so im not a plasterer, i started a reno and my m8 who is a plasterer helped me free of charge. He one coats and says one coat is fine for finishing boards but not other backgrounds. He taught me to plaster. I do 2 coats cos it gives me room to correct, he one coats. My two coat and his one coat look about the same.
    So id say an experienced plasterer can one coat, at least on a good base, but a less able plasterer should two coat. BUT a professional plastering for money should always 2 coat, as its the proper finish.

    It's OK in the right environment. Problem isn't how many coats.
    It's more about who applies the plaster and how much they care about end results. 🤔👍🏻

    Site managers only want one coat these days...... quick and cheap... not the best but the trade has changed in my experience. Forget British gypsum guidelines..... remember when they introduced the stuff that didn't need PVA?!!!

    Hello Blaine. I've never plastered before but I am gonna tackle re-rendering my house. ie. Chip of the old render, re-scratch coat and then top coat with pebble dash finish. My one question is.... I'm measuring out my mix 4-1 in 1 gallon buckets. So I've 5 bucket worth in the mixer. How much SBR Bond and how much Waterproofer agents do I need per mix.?? Is 250ml from both agent's to much? Should I use 100ml ?? It's something I'm unsure about. My house is built from a mix of concrete and ash. All advice will be gratefully received. Best wishes, Dave from Northern Ireland 👍👍

    Blane I have been following and watching for months, subscribed on here and via emails… Iv been ripped off 3 times by so called tradespeople and now have no choice but to have a go! I’m stuck on starting because of the way the builders have left the doors and windows in the new build.
    Is there a video to show how the boards should be up to windows and doors. Do I just skim up to UPVC frames? It’s a new build so to speak block wall extension conservatory
    The windows have been fitted in between the block pillars … expands foam to fill the gap and boarded, some have gaps with block.
    Iv searched many videos but they don’t show me what I need to know.
    How to board and plaster new build window and door detail
    Thank you

    I've done this a few times but at selective moments .the guy i work for is a great traditional plasterer from the old times but close to retirement however has taught me a lot. but he will not take on the new ideas easily.,for instance the speed skim which is going to give you a good gauge ( how can it not ?) Dying to try it out. .but hey on to original thought .I think the sponge works so well on bubbles or blebs as we call them is because it breaks the surface and let's them out .done a thoughrogh brushing In the past for same reason. No matter how experienced you ate you will get caught out now and again .oh and love the vids bro 👍👌
