I COULD LISTEN TO THIS ON REPEAT FOR YEARS THIS IS SOME STRAIGHT FIRE SOMEDAY PEOPLE WILL RECOGNIZE CHRISTOPHER OWENS AND ILL BE ABLE TO SHOW THEM THIS SONG AND BE LIKE "LET ME SHOW YOU SOME REAL SHIT"
@tanemahuta33 the first chord on the bit 'like a river' is E minor, and after that you have a point, it stays in Dmaj (arguably B minor). although the song has a really minorish feel to me. as far as proggy goes it just sounds really ELO - which to me is proggy.
@ryancduncan There's a difference between being derivative because the music is utilising a particular guitar pop/rock idiom and just being creatively lackadaisical. Or to put it another way, there's a difference between saying, "I know all the good ideas have been used but I'm still going to try to do my own thing" and saying, "All the good ideas have been used so all I can do is pick amongst them." Nirvana, The Stooges, VU, MBV, RATM and The Beatles were all derivative in the former way.
@nickfromCO It's actually quite funny, Owens said in an interview that with every song he wrote he had some other song in his mind. Since then I've been trying to figure out what that other songs are, and now you made me realize this one was is defintely 'don't let me down'. Thank you
"Love Like a River" has a verse structure, chord changes, and tinkling piano arrangement almost identical to the Beatles' "Oh! Darlin", which was itself a direct rip of songs like "Blueberry Hill" - the folks at pitchfork evidently have tin ears. this is minor chordsy proggy glop like 90% of extant indie
@josephscott80 there already is an alternative, it's called The Needle Drop. He gives far more rational video reviews, is willing to accept when he's wrong by actually communicating with the audience and justifies his claims in an entertaining and, I'd say, insightful way. He gives you the big picture, pretty much, rather than pretty prose and anecdotal bullshit. Been following him for a while and, honestly, I've been turned onto so many bands it's unreal. Look him up, his name's Anthony Fantano
@10ccalanarkush Agreed. Also, highly-rated reviews like the recent one for the new Girls LP make it really, really hard to take Pitchfork seriously. At least when they give a release like 'MBDTF' a 10 I can put it down to over-excitement and at least they're praising music that, despite its MANY faults, is TRYING to be unique and idiosyncratic instead of content to be a good imitation. At this point, I think if a worthy contender appeared many people would abandon Pitchfork altogether.
@Sn4zzl3 There's nothing mythical about hipsters, but that discussion is irrelevant to what I originally wrote in response to daddyfatsaxohten. With regards to originality, see my response to ryancduncan. In short, I agree with you that nothing is truly original. But that doesn't mean art should be made as if the only way it can come close to possessing individual expression and invention is by lazily appropriating the work of others.
@tanemahuta33 by which i mean something like this - Em/////A//D//G//Bm7 (instead of completing the cycle and returning to Dmaj). srsly, don't mind me i'm just one of the many who are upset rock and roll doesn't generally hew to a raw power template. i'm super narrow minded, quite a nazi really. i was angry at the pitchfork review because when it contextualizes songs within the sonic framework of oh darling and blueberry hill, you think you'll hear some of that exuberance, except you don't.
@josephscott80 I disagree, sir. Anthony Fantano often disagrees with Pitchfork, but then again he also agrees with them periodically, which saves him from the trap of being a Pitchfork-hater. Because it's those people, the ones who dislike 'conventional music' that are perpetuating the myth of the hipster. Nothing is original, not really. Just different takes on what's been done.
Surely someone else must hear Etta James' 'I'd Rather Go Blind' here. Unfamiliar with the record, I assumed they were covering it when I saw them live.
@daddyfatsaxohten That site appears to be just another music blog, it's reviewing and praising pretty much the same stuff as Pitchfork, and its writing (and overall presentation) is quite amateurish. My biggest problem with Pitchfork is that it favours conventional music in underground, intellectual and ironic clothing over genuinely inventive/idiosyncratic and less fashion-conscious music. However, despite what I wrote in my previous comment, I recognise the former is what the majority want.
who the fuck cares if it sounds the chord progression sound like down let me down slowed down. dont let me down probably sounds like a song the beatles listened to
It's a good solo, but listen to: Stairway to Heaven, Free Bird, Comfortably Numb, November Rain, One, or Crazy Train and tell me this song's solo is better than those.
Love love love love love this song..
I bought this record on a whim, had a good feeling 'bout it
I like being right.. but i like this album more!

@10ccalanarkush Agreed.

I will cry myself to sleep now.

The love of my life broke up with me, he's dating a new girl now. And I wish he wanted to stay and he realize I could make him happy.

Someone really needs to do a fan video of this with River Song from Doctor Who.

Say mermaids twice post this on two other videos and touch water
@10ccalanarkush Minor chordsy? Proggy? I take it you're not a musician.
lol the lead singer said to imagine justin bieber singing this song and it would be better
if this album is in pitchfork top 5 then this year sucks big time for music and its definitely a beatles rip off.
I know...seriously worst news ever.
