I have been a big fan of the original Os Cariocas for years, when a friend who traveled often to Brasil introduced me to their wonderful music. Now I am happy to see the next generation lives on, in Quarteto do Rio. But since my second language is Spanish and not Portuguese, I would so much love to see some English subtitles. Thank you all the same - the music however... is always great!!!

This IS Brazil. Bossa Nova is the heart and soul of this country and no one does it better than those born there. Via Brazil/Via Bossa Nova !!!! May you last forever

    • @robynrishe2310
      @robynrishe2310 Месяц назад

I used to agree with you, but I've learned, Bossa Nova is far from the heart and soul of Brazil. It exists there, but competes with a lot that is really inferior yet often wins out in popularity. Thank goodness there are still young performers carrying forward the tradition of Bossa Nova, so it is in no danger of dying out, although it will probably remain peripheral. If you haven't heard of her, search the Web for Analu Sampaio, probably the youngest performer continuing the Bossa Nova tradition. In fact, here's a link pairing her with Roberto Menescal, one of the orignators of Bossa Nova. Talk about bridging the age gap: She's 12 in this video; he's 84.

Thanks, I will check her out. It was Bossa Nova that brought the attention of the world of Brazilian music. However, just like the Amazon River, there are so many "tributaries". I've explored the native Bossa Nova sounds AND as many tributaries as I could to this wonderful music (I've avoid the junk like Elvis' Bossa Nova Baby LP which is an insult to the music itself). From Nara Leao to Nelson Nascimento to Jobim there are so many "offramps", it might take a lifetime to discover them all. Sorry, but I must disagree with you, Bossa Nova IS the heart and soul because IT brought world focus to the music of Brazil, which did lead to other discoveries of the countries' music, however, the "road trip" began there.

    • @robynrishe2310
      @robynrishe2310 Месяц назад

Interesting analogy, comparing Brazilian music to the Amazon River. You're right that Bossa Nova introduced the world to Brazilian music. But to me the criterion for being the "heart and soul" of Brazilian music is not its effect on the world, but its place within Brazil itself. I've been in Brazil three times. Bossa Nova style music exists in the coastal areas of southern Brazil, although somewhat peripherally. (I've never been on the northern coast, including Bahia.) It is virtually unknown in the interior.
I never heard of Bossa Nova Baby by Elvis, so I checked it out. Just Elvis doing his usual thing. Why he even used the words "Bossa Nova" is beyond me, except I guess it was during the big Bossa Nova craze in the US. I extremely doubt Elvis would claim that this number actually WAS Bossa Nova.
In comparison, I have a large personal database of Brazilian music. The great bulk of it is performed by Brazilians, but I also have significant numbers of non-Brazilians from all over the world, conveying this music exceptionally well. Here's a sample:
      ruclips.net/video/xKyDeC9g_Mot/видео.html
Alba Armengou and Joana Casanova, from the Sant Andreu Jazz Band, Spain, led by Joan Chamorro.
      Alagoas (Djavan)
      ruclips.net/video/6ajz8HOmRNM/видео.html
Yvi Szoncso, Austria. With a band coming from all over Europe (and one member from Brazil).
A Rã (João Donato, Caetano Veloso)
      ruclips.net/video/imljitIgofc/видео.html
Stacey Kent, US. Performing with Marcos Valle (as she has many times).
Stacey sings excellent Portuguese, but I'm throwing in a track in English.
The Answer (original Portuguese, "A Resposta")
(Music by Marcos Valle. English lyrics I think were by Ray Gilbert, who also wrote English lyrics for several Jobim songs.)
      ruclips.net/video/97zzdAunFCw/видео.html
Gabriela Kozyra, Poland. She studied Brazilian music in Brazil. Here she performs with the Brazilian composer, Guinga.
Bolero de Satã (Paulo César Pinheiro, Guinga)
      ruclips.net/video/tj2CFIgYXhk/видео.html
      Antoine Chante Brassens, France
Eu e o Meu Amor / Lamento no Morro (both by Tom Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes)
      ruclips.net/video/NzGa8qdSPiI/видео.html
Sarava Music, Israel. The group name, using "Sarava", implies that they play mostly or only Brazilian music.
Canto de Xangô (Baden Powell, Vinicius de Moraes)
      ruclips.net/video/YWc7oqMEyak/видео.html
Dandalunda Brazil Project, Bulgaria. (Another group that probably plays mostly or only Brazilian music.)
      Chove Chuva (Jorge Ben Jor)
      ruclips.net/video/RFH_qsVEr_k/видео.html
      HeeKyung Na, South Korea
      Desafinado (Tom Jobim, Newton Mendonça)
      ruclips.net/video/pNiTp3Q4NNU/видео.html
Group: BandazZ, Italy. Their stated objective is to promote and spread the knowledge of Brazilian music.
É Preciso Perdoar (Alcivando Luz, Carlos Coqueijo)
      ruclips.net/video/9zYHj4ZsI5c/видео.html
Caroll Jo, Indonesia. Note that the backup singers wear the Muslim scarf in this most populous Muslim country in the world.
(Frankly, I'd rather see the scarf than those tennies that Caroll is wearing. Those do not belong on any stage!)
E Vamos Lá (João Donato, Joyce Moreno)
I was going to restrict to 10, but here is one more just to acknowledge that, of course, Portugal also sings Brazilian.
      ruclips.net/video/Iqgc1ft3VGo/видео.html
Tiago Nacarato. Onde Anda Você (Vinicius de Moraes, Hermano Silva)
(Following this debut, Nacarato became a professional and has performed to appreciative audiences in Brazil.)

@@robynrishe2310 Many thanks for the Brazilian music links. Yes, my analogy to the Amazon was to demonstrate that, like the Amazon, the music has many offshoots and tributaries that leads one to who knows where. Travel up that "river of music" and see what you find. Yes, Elvis clearly used the word "Bossa Nova" in his title to capitalize on the Bossa Nova craze at the time (Roberto Menescal HATES that Elvis made that LP). One artist I can suggest to you is Gracinha Leporace (now wife of Sergio Mendes). Excellent voice. Growing up in Brazil, Gracinha was a member of the group Gurpo Manifesto with her brother Fernando Leporace. She later met Sergio and moved to America, becoming a member of Brazil 77. I met her once (with Sergio) after a concert near San Francisco, very nice person. I think is far more important in day to day life than it ever was in America, and I see this when I see the mother and her children singing in their homes as they work (often the same songs!!!). Thanks again for the links and best of luck to you

      @@GeeBee909
      Hello BeeGee,
I do know of Gracinha Leporace. I have several tracks of her in my database, including ones with Sergio Mendes, but I didn't realize she was his wife. My favorite recording of hers is incorporated into a video that you might not have seen, about Baden Powell. Her part starts at 4:14, but the entire video is worth watching (and not long, just 10 minutes).
      ruclips.net/video/EVCqO2qSPP0/видео.html
For a very different take on the same song, check this out:
      ruclips.net/video/fTbuXKjItmg/видео.html
I'll let you discover who the artist is, but will mention, she's one of the recognized world masters of her unusual instrument.
Regarding Robert Menescal's hatred of Elvis's "bossa nova" - I'm sure he (Menescal) was joined by a LOT of other Brazilians!
As for the Amazon River with all its tributaries, I've actually experienced some of that, and am proud to say that I have SWUM in the Amazon River. I'm a trained swimmer so just could not resist, but my great swim lasted about 5 terrifying minutes! The current was unbelievably strong. Nevertheless, it's no lie to say that I swam in the Amazon River. And the strength of that current makes your analogy with Brazilian music more apt than you probably imagined!
