One thing we forgot to mention: The cameras have been re-worked, both front and rear. They have a very good resolution now, can recommend! Oh and the Diesel is also a 3-cylinder. About "7-Speed-CVT", see remarks about "fake gears" in the driving part.
Have you tried the 1.5 diesel in Sports Tourer version? Tried one today and it was noisy and handling was just as poor as the AGR seat was uncomfortable. Very disappointing.
I’ve got the pre face lift Holden Astra 1.6. 0-100km/h: 6.4 sec. Fuel consumption in the city is 8.2 l/100 km, which is fantastic. Too bad they don’t have the 1.6 engine in Europe anymore.
@Redblade 8.2 L/100km in the city for a car that produces 200hp (or 147 kW) is not bad consumption. However, they still use the 1.6 petrol in the Insignia. I think that they got rid of it because the did not market it well. People did not see the benefit. However it's worth driving the 1.6 yourself to see what I'm talking about. Thx.
Nice to see review from lower segment again. Good point about air conditioning: I also making a lot of adjustment even in automatic climate control. So it is also ok to have manual AC for me.
Great review and super informative as always Thomas. A possible contender to drag me out of my SUV! Astra has very classy styling inside and out, and low noise levels would be a nice change.
Ordered GS Line 1.5d 122hp manual. I doubt if they have the new nice panel but nonetheless there is the firmer suspension, the AGR seats and the 17 inch alloys! And of course MANUAL HANDBRAKE! Also, this is the only really brand new 1.5/1.6 diesel engine in the market for about 5 years, so I believe it's going to be excellent. Hopefuly, reliable to!
I recently got the opel astra 1.4T as a rental. Awesome car, really nice driving experience. After 4 hour drive i even wanted to drive a little more. Have read about cause i would actually concider buying one. . . But reading about it it doesn't score very high on reliability, and that kills it for me. I can forgive small fault and defects but engine problems need to be fixed before I short list it.
As a insignia ct 2018 owner id say this astra is a really good car for the money. I wish the 1.6t was avalible. I havent driven the new focus so I cant say which one is the best but its probably the two best cars in this segment in my opinion. I love this channel in soo many ways 😃👍 now ill go for a drive in my 2.0T CT 😜
Thanks for great video. Just ordered a 2021 model, gonna exchange it for my Alfa Romeo Giulia, need a little bit more practicality. I test drove over yesterday and I was very impressed by how it handled and how the steering felt, very direct. It was between this and the new Citroen C4.
Autogefuhl why are you not mentioning that the door window frames are covered with plastic instead of being exposed metal as EVERY other car in this class ?? This is something that should be pointed and Opel should be greeted for that because it is a nice detail that is only reseved for premium brands - and even much more expensive cars such as VW Tiguan, VW Passat, Shkoda Kodiaq, Shkoda Superb, Hyundai Santa Fe, Kia Sorento, Nissan X-tral, Toyota Rav 4 etc, etc has exposed metal doors which look especially ugly when your car has a bright color. Plastic covered door frames are not only nicer to look but improve sound insulation as well which is very important.
Yes I have noted that from the beginning, same on Insignia, a pity that people do not seem to appreciate such lavish details. VW Golf does not have it and is cheaper than Astra on other minor details as well. just this single detail would make me buy it, top class...
@@autogefuehl no, I'm absolutely not saying this. I think that you probably have not noted this detail but you should. Because especially when the car has a bright paint it is ugly. I have a white metallic 2018 Seat Leon and the ugly door frames are driving me crazy. That's the single most hated part of the car for me. And the front part of the window frame is in the driver's field of vision when driving unlike almost anything else in the car, so I get to see the exposed metal doors almost constantly. This has got to the point that I'm not getting a car with exposed metal window frames no matter what.
Define last few years. Ever since PSA acquired Opel the brand has been doing great in terms of sales and profitability, which is quite an achievement considering Opel under GM hasn't been profitable since the 90's. The Crossland X has particularly sold very well and lately I've been seing a bunch of them on the road. It seems that PSA knows what it's doing with all of its brands.
Full HD, full Screen, full length.... Let's GO.... you Go Thomas... Love when he says this, brings a smile... 😉 Thomas should be cast in a movie just saying those words...
Even the old infotainment has the option to go from AA/Carplay to the car infotainment by pressing the home button. Also if you want to go back, just long press the home button and it jumps to AA/Carplay
What a package. Not the best looking but not ugly either. Automatic with adaptive cruise control sounds like a dream, I'd love a car that just does everything for me. Interior is smart. Great prices for used! Can definitely see myself swapping out my old 2.0 GTC for one of these
Nice review as always. I totally agree with you Thomas; "Tiesto - Urban Train" is a classic tune that showcases how Tiesto used to make great music back in the days. Greetings from Norway.
Me too. Test drove one before looking at youtube reviews so I can have my own perspective first. Unlike the SGcarmart guy who bashed the car with his sloppy and slipshod journalism, this review reinforces my faith that I made a good judgement in selecting this car as my next one. Cheers from SG too.
I'm often changing the climate controls, Thomas. 'Tiesto good times! Just Be'. Thanks for the German lesson. Great driving part - very interesting impressions. Likewise for the CVT. Taunus lovely. Many thanks.
I have cvt in my Honda accord 1.5 vtec T, works just fine, like regular automatic, 0-100 I get in 7 sec., verbrauch average around 7.5l, so cvt in some cars are good. Schőne grusse aus USA.
Hey Thomas. Really superb review, thank you for that. I admit Ive had my concerns when I read that the FL of the Astra only had 3 Cylinders and was kinda irritated that only the diesel engine got the new 9-speed conventional automatic. You only hear bad things about CVT gearboxes, you know, the infamous "rubber band effect". But your Review taught me better, thank you for that. PS: Did you also shift gears manually with the CVT? If yes, how did it feel? If you could elaborate on that I would be very thankful. PPS: Did you also have the chance to drive the diesel engine with the new 9-speed automatic? If yes, could you please sum up the driving experience especially compared to the CVT. Again, thank you very much for your detailed review. I wish you a great weekend!
My '12 Fiat Punto Evo broke down with under 90.000 miles on it. Not the diesel engine mind you, but the timing chain/distribution chain (whatever you call it) just snapped... €1500 in damage. It seems that in an effort to save the planet, all parts are made lighter and weaker to save fuel or something. My '00 VW (petrol engine with 250.000 miles on it) is still going strong after almost 2 decades. You tell me: what is more environmentally responsible? Driving an existing old car till the very end, or having to buy another one because modern stuff just sucks balls? I dont know really...
@@flemmingsorensen5470 I'm sorry. My english skills aren't so good. I gonna try again: "could you put the technal data in the description, please? It would be easier to understand the engine's options avaliable". Great job, Thomas. Thank you for the review.
i was saving money to buy Astra H, but in the last minute i changed my mind and bought corsa D, i dont know how to feel, its like im missing something from the corsa :/ astra H forever in my heart
Autogefuhl please add a 4minute silent driving segment... Thomas is a great presenter but I want to check the car too without distraction... That drive through the trees if it was silent would have been brilliant. Thank you for a great video.
we sometimes do that with performance cars near the end of the driving part. We can also add some with normal ones if you like, maybe 4 mins is too much, but a little
In my opinion, the Astra has always been a decent and honest alternative in the compact segment. Not so nicely processed as the Golf, A3 & Co, but ( my personal opinion, too, based on the long terms reviews ) far more reliable than the latter. Maybe times has changed and Astra became the real people's car, instead of the Golf. It may not have the plushest materials in the class, but the attention to detail is present: the car is aerodynamic, the front seats are exemplary, the engines are economical, just like the Kadetts of the 80's. A small suggestion: let's change the name back to "Kadett" for the next generation to come!!!
No mention about the rear visibility. While it seems that it is far better than the cave the Japanese have built in the rear of the Mazda 3, it does seem to be limited in Astra. Also I think this car really misses a mild hybrid mechanism.
Only had one problem out of the twelve Vauxhall's I've owned, and that was the well documented Meriva random power steering loss. Given the two Peugeot's I owned (two 306's) had big problems (heater matrix leak, ultra smokey turbo, random electronic issues), it'll be interesting to see how the new Vauxhall's hold up.
@@autogefuehl Yes, they have already got the Opel Karl Rocks rebranded as "VinFast Fadil", which has got quite a number of sales since last year. This new Astra is on its way to the market as well, probably in Q2 2020.
@@autogefuehl Thank you for replying Thomas. Not sure if I understand, what's different from Astra to the rest of Opel (some will already have PSA materials I think)? Just curious! Thank you.
@@FiuzA2k Since this Astra came out in it's current generation only a couple years ago, this is just a facelift but cars like the new Corsa are completely PSA while the Combo, Crossland and Grandland are mostly PSA.

Autogefuhl, how does the Astra compair to other rival cars in the small stationwagon-segment, when it comes to sound isolation and a sporty drvie feeling? I would also like to see a review of the Astra Sports Tourer and have your thoughts about the sound isolation and sporty drive feeling in this car, compared to other rival cars. Its like Thomas said in the video. The Astra is great value for money in the compact segment, but do you recommend a different car in the small stationwagon-segment if you top priority is sound isolation, great handling and sporty suspention?:)
@@FireTigerHD Well, yes and no. Also the 1.4 petrol with CVT is an 3 cylinder engine. I think the decision to go only for 3 cylinders must be the efficency in the WLTP test procedure. PSA mentioned several times that they won't pay penalties to the EU in 2021. So I think they don't have a choice atm. Unlike Volkswagen (personal opinion), PSA can not afford to pay high penalties and they dont have enough EVs/hybrids for compensation. So they chose only engines that saves as much CO2 as possible.
Hello, do you have any information about a GSI/OPC version? A version using the 1.6 Turbo engine from the Peugeot 308 GTi would be interesting. Thanks!
I'm kinda confused about the engines and the gearboxes. All the automatic gearboxes are CVTs or just for the 1.4 engine is the CVT? And how's that 7 gears on a CVT gearbox? Thanks! :)
@@autogefuehl thanks again! But what about the other petrol engines? From the horsepower and displacement figures I guess they are Peugeot's, so are they combined with the 8 speed automatic gearbox that Peugeot uses?
In my opinion there are more attractive cars in this segment, but I think that the Astra is a good and comfortable car and I know a lot of people that made more than 300.000km without particular problems. PS. So the new 1.2 petrol engines are not developed by PSA?
I think Peugeot should bring Opel brand to U.S market, Peugeot don't have good reputation in America and Peugeot badge return to U.S will be mistake again for PSA.
Cool video, but funny by the 30th minute, on a small phone screen, due too the similar pants colour, you look like you have 3 legs. It made me laugh. Thank you.
@32:13 Und natürlich auch für Holländische Zuschauer... ;) Ich wohne ganz in der Nähe von Deutschland, und mag sehr gerne mal über die Grenze gehen und ein bischen "herumfahren", ums so zu sagen... ;)
Good to hear that CVTs are getting better. Theoretically it is the most optimal way to transfer power from the engine to the wheels, but the ones I encountered were horrifying to drive. We have an Avensis 1.8 147 with a CVT in the family and the noise it makes when you accelerate is unbearable, let alone the awful fuel consumption. I will miss big Diesel engines though, because you can put a turbo on a small petrol, but you won’t replicate the feeling of acceleration a two or three litre turbocharged diesel with a lot of torque provides (like the 2.0 163 form the Astra J era)
You have to keep in mind that there is still quite a difference in cost, and this is one of the solutions manufacturers use to keep the starting price lower. And also, most of the premium cars that cost double-triple have halogen headlights as standard. Of course the matrix LED headlights are awesome but if you have a problem when the warranty expires, you probably wish you had halogens :)).
I still prefer my old version of Astra K with 4-cylinder engine. I can't imagine me driving without one cylinder. It is like someone stole a piece of heart of engine and car. Moreover CVT gearbox is like driving in playstation games. No fun at all. Manual or automatic gearbox with torque converter is my choice.
I'll explain. The new engines were already in a late state of development when PSA took over Opel, so PSA let Germany finish these engines. As a trade deal, these engines will also be available in the US for GM.

The Astra has a door window frames that are covered with a plastic which improves the look especially when the door is closed and improves the sound insulation from the door windows. Also the Astra has leather lined center console part where the driver/passenger legs will rest and this will be more comfortable than the exposed hard plastics on the Golf
Golf costs more, but has a lot more configuration and engine possibilities. But if you're going to buy a standard golf vs standard astra the astra is a better choice in my opinion. For example there is no comparable Astra to the Golf GTI or Golf R (Interior + engine)
Lots, it will take time to list everything, but will try at a later time. Astra has more space for passengers, higher sitting position, if you want it, much better head space and wider legroom space, the wheel houses take up space for the feet in Golf. Golf is a lot of surface and less content, most big words and boast. - If you ignore more equipment alternatives and just concentrate on the car itself - Then, Astra wins...
It will definitely be more popular with the changes they made and the rise in price could be justified. Gets slowly the beginnings of an Astra. What a disaster lately. This cannot be the wish of German Opel workers. Hopefully Opel soon gets back in hands of Germans. I ask myself what they do at Irmscher's lately. A noble lady raped by a Frensh ututut.
CVT on turbo engines is not bad at all, almost never above 3000 rpm and its very quiet, as you can see in video at 168 kmph 1300RPM...thats insane actually

I still have & daily drive the first generation Astra. I love Opel Astra
A bit slow with the 1.4 engine lol
@@piotr346 true true
I also drive old opel, Calibra turbo, only problem is rust!
Within the PSA family, in Opel you can adjust music volume and air temperature manually. I think it's quite a nice feature.
Such a shame that there’s no OPC version
That's exactly what I thought. And you know what? PREVIOUS generation of Focus also had it but now it's gone in the new one!
"why are you not mentioning" ? Do you suggest we deliberately conceal details to make the car look less good?
This has got to the point that I'm not getting a car with exposed metal window frames no matter what.
yeah ok, i really didnt notice. Re-checked it now with the cars u mentioned
I really hope Opel do well with this one and future cars, I think the Opel brand is strong but the last few years have not been great for them.
That is why Opel is now Peugeot... or should I say PSA.
@@madant7777 sure but is that a good thing? I hope so
Define last few years.
Seems Vauxhall/Opel have hit the mark here with this generation of the Astra, seen some strong reviews for it.

Must be joking mate! It's a crap rather.
Agree!

3 cylinders & no 1.6t petrol.
Bad move opel.
I be buying a nearly new 1.6t petrol 2016-2019 thankyou very much because of this.
Of course, not groundbreaking but I can't wait for the PSA Astra in a few years.
It'll probably be a rebadged 308, just like the Corsa is a rebadged 208. Maybe that's not a bad thing though.
Hello from Singapore. A very good, unbiased review. I enjoyed your detailed coverage of the car. Will pick up a brand new one soon. Thumbs up.
Me too. Test drove one before looking at youtube reviews so I can have my own perspective first. Unlike the SGcarmart guy who bashed the car with his sloppy and slipshod journalism, this review reinforces my faith that I made a good judgement in selecting this car as my next one. Cheers from SG too.

Great review Thomas in top form enjoying himself ,what a good all rounder the opel Astra is.
Cheers! Just drove that one so far. Paddles are not that important with the cvt

On the old astra diesel you can get to 400k km without a problem but these engines will blow up at 200k km
No way an engine lower than 1.6 with a turbo will last a long time in my opinion

You tell me: what is more environmentally responsible? we sometimes do that with performance cars near the end of the driving part.
Hmmm the front looks like the Astra 2004 model.

Nice review very informative!
Nice review! I came here right before the re-branding of the Opel Astra to "VinFast" in the Vietnamese market. Really look forward to it.
VinFast will also collaborate with opel?
@@autogefuehl Yes, they have already got the Opel Karl Rocks rebranded as "VinFast Fadil", which has got quite a number of sales since last year. This new Astra is on its way to the market as well, probably in Q2 2020.

I imagine the CVT is from some japaneese brands... because they initiated it.
CVT is GM
@@worldolivier I doubt it as it works differently than the Japanese ones and GM usually always develops theirs own automatic boxes - regardless of technology.
Everything indicates that it is GM technology, it has been in Astra in the Chinese market for several years.
The CVT is sourced from JATCO, who owns the rights to the CVT and also makes the majority of CVTs in the world.

Hm, sporty handling and insulation is good indeed!
The 1.5 Diesel is also an 3 cylinder engine.
oh, thanks!
Only the 1.2 is 3 cylinder, the rest have 4 cylinders
The new 1.5 Diesel is indeed 3-cylinder, just re-checked
@@autogefuehl that's pretty strange
@@FireTigerHD Well, yes and no. Also the 1.4 petrol with CVT is an 3 cylinder engine. I think the decision to go only for 3 cylinders must be the efficency in the WLTP test procedure. PSA mentioned several times that they won't pay penalties to the EU in 2021. So I think they don't have a choice atm. Unlike Volkswagen (personal opinion), PSA can not afford to pay high penalties and they dont have enough EVs/hybrids for compensation. So they chose only engines that saves as much CO2 as possible.

Very attractive car although I'd rather choose new Opel Astra-e. I hope that Autogefühl will review it as very first.
Why is the passger seat not adjustable?
In my opinion there are more attractive cars in this segment, but I think that the Astra is a good and comfortable car and I know a lot of people that made more than 300.000km without particular problems.

I will miss big Diesel engines though, because you can put a turbo on a small petrol, but you won’t replicate the feeling of acceleration a two or three litre turbocharged diesel with a lot of torque provides (like the 2.0 163 form the Astra J era)
holden astra too
We have no fake exhausts.
But we need something fake!
Put in fake gear shifting.
"We need a CVT that works, so then we solve the problem, we take away the experience that no one likes and create something completely new."
Disappointing that halogen is still the standard fit. It's 2019, time for car manufacturers to catch up.
150 euro is, after all, very cheap for LED, not really a problem.
I actually prefer 3 cylinder engines. They have a more sportive sound!
@@MrSparklespring Sportive sound? Only when connected with another 3 cylinders in V configuration.
Are you sure that the 1.2 was developed by Opel? Because it looks like it comes from PSA.
Yes. Talked to the engineer myself
I'll explain. The new engines were already in a late state of development when PSA took over Opel, so PSA let Germany finish these engines. As a trade deal, these engines will also be available in the US for GM.

Why would someone buy this car, i mean what are its advantages over a Vw Golf say? Genuine question.
Watch full length and you ll know more :)
Well.. An Astra gets less stolen then a Golf. At least here in the Netherlands :p
Danke schön
It will definitely be more popular with the changes they made and the rise in price could be justified. Gets slowly the beginnings of an Astra. What a disaster lately. This cannot be the wish of German Opel workers. Hopefully Opel soon gets back in hands of Germans. I ask myself what they do at Irmscher's lately. A noble lady raped by a Frensh ututut.
So, the last German Astra visually... Oh, and the worst transmission - CVT.

@@vladimirart758 Is there a worse transmission than CVT they could have installed? Droning, motor/pedal disconnect...
