I use the technique of focusing on the main subject if I don't mind other things being out of focus. However, like with most things, if you want the best results, you can't be lazy. This goes for photography too. So if you want an image that is absolutely tack sharp from front to back there is just no getting around focus stacking. Folks need to forget the idea that this is going to magically happen in a single frame. Today's cameras and lenses are way better than they used to be but even with that, they just can't get everything in focus in a single frame. So for all the folks that say they hate post processing and don't want to spend time in front of the computer, you're going to have to get over that and bite the bullet and take multiple shots. Each shot has to focus on a different point in the frame. Once you finish shooting, the magic happens in Photoshop when you stack the images. This is the only way I know to get absolutely tack sharp images front to back and not just "acceptably sharp" images. Sorry to burst the bubble.

In the first 2 pics it doesn't bother me the background isn't sharp.
