“True” metalheads are insufferable. I’ve met so many cool older guys at deathcore shows that appreciate the genre moving forward. My dad was born 1963 and he was an early metalhead, and he told me when I was playing metalcore for him back in 2009 that he’d be into it if was my age too. Was it his taste at the time, not really; did he appreciate metal was alive and well, absolutely. His favorite I played for him was Killswitch Engage, which is always a happy memory because Killswitch is absolutely fantastic and still a favorite of mine. You can just like a genre of music and not be an elitist. I’m a kpop fan but I still go back to metal all the time, I like country music and rap and pop and punk, metal’s my favorite genre but I like to expand. The dorks arguing about Metallica vs Megadeth in 2023 are bigger posers than anyone who likes a few Linkin Park and Slipknot songs. Metal has a real exclusivity problem, and I hate it.

True metalheads are just insufferable tight wads who will only allow you in their little click if you listen to some boring djent song or some early thrash or death metal or prog metal music from like 40 years ago. All in all not worth it.

The real litmus test for me is when I meet someone who listens to metal, I ask them if they like any other genres. I find most of the metal elitists tend to be completely insular in their tastes. And yeah, you're right, dudes arguing about dumb metal shit from 1980 are the biggest poseurs. They try so hard to hold onto their identity as a "metal head" when in reality nobody gives a shit. More people now than ever have diverse music tastes. Just sticking to one genre is goofy AF.

That only listens to the old stuff thing reminds me of the time I accidentally found my favorite album ever (at the time). This is embarrassing. Roughly 20 years ago I had just eaten at chipotle and en route to my car there was a cd on the ground face down. Was in great shape. No text on the front, only graphics. No idea who or what it was. Grabbed it, popped it in my cd player, and was in audio ecstasy from beginning to end. Was 100% how I imagined every band I've been in sounding, and it even rekindled my interest in joining bands.
    It was Avenged Sevenfold's debut.

I actually disagree with your opinion of production quality. I get that raw, low-fi production can make an album sound grittier/rougher. But, on the other hand, more professional production can give it much more impact. Case in point: “Sons Of Northern Darkness” by Immortal. Which IMO benefits greatly from its excellent production.

Its the same reason a comedians’ earliest special;s) are usually their strongest and get weaker over time. When you’re pressured to pump out new material every 12-24 months it just wont be as strong.
Besides, the vast majority of artists aren’t an infinite well of artistic expression, even the best artists just kind of run out of shit to say after awhile🤷‍♂️.

There have been numerous bands over the past few years that have absolutely blown up on social median and youtube and built a massive following there so when they decided to do a few shows they immediately sell out theaters. They never had to suffer through the phase where you make no money while touring. They build the following so that shows sell out immediately. Why would you do it any other way? Which does make sense because look at all the guitar RUclips channels, you have John Mayer fans which make up 30% of them and the other 70% are metal players. "Their old stuff is better" is the only thing he's wrong on. I lost count of the bands with 1 or 2 great albums that totally drop off afterwards. It's not necessarily their fault, I mean you spend all this time writing your breakout album that gets you attention, but it's not easy to do that when you've got a record deal and have to produce on a schedule on top of touring. Of course there are exceptions but they don't disprove the rule

The whole notion that women are only into metal because of men is ridiculous. The first popular music that I heard was Supertramp, then Abba, and then Kiss (the Dynasty album). I hate Kiss but in the mid-80s got into NWOBM and a few years later, industrial metal. I'm female and a bit older than Finn. Some people need to get out more lol

i fw you finn but saying metal is the “fakest” genre is straight up wrong. yeah a bunch of bands program drums and bass and record guitars three notes at a time but the majority of bands dont do that. and how many pop artists/rappers dont write their own music or dont even use their real voice?? saying metal is more fake than anything other genre is a literal lie

I actually do think comparing metal to classical is really cringe. Some bands have very interesting harmonies, but a lot of harmony in metal is just power chords and doubling a melody at a 3rd or something like that. No real counterpoint, which was a huge part of what makes most classical music what it is. Don't get me wrong, I love power chord chugs, but it's not "complex harmony".

I think it’s ironic because I think Bradly is kind of like the poster boy for those type of metal fans. He just happens to have a RUclips channel and he can play guitar but so can 3/4 of the metal fan base.
I’m not saying that it’s not cool to go to school from music and get a degree but I’ve noticed everyone that has and I think it’s because of Cliff Burton I really do because in those Metallica interviews back in the day It’s mentioned a lot that Cliff actually went to school to study music and I think it’s great that he influenced people to do that in the world of heavy metal but on the flipside of that everyone that has that has a RUclips channel starts off every video like this:
“ Hey, this is my top 10 (insert metal albums, or metal bands, or metal songs) and some of you aren’t going to like the list but I don’t subscribe to the heavy metal group think tank. I’m not close minded like some of you are I just like what I like”……. And goes through his list and the video is constantly reminding you that if you don’t agree with him, you’re an idiot”.
And I don’t mean Bradly specifically, but it seems like they’re sure are a lot of people that play guitar that went to school that really think their opinion means more after they give a speech telling you how everyone is going to have a different opinion . The most annoying thing is like especially when you’ve got bands like Metallica where there isn’t a living member in the band that did go to school for example, or even bands like slayer how they can’t wait to point out how “something isn’t right because in school, we learned for this to actually makes sense you have to blah blah blah” dude if it sounds good to my ears I’m going to like it. If it doesn’t I’m not going to you went to school you can be the biggest fucking stuck up snob in the community on RUclips. Congratulations.

I have to say, I'm a huge metal head that appreciates all kinds of metal. I do have my preferences, but calling someone a poser for listening to mainstream or popular variations of it is ridiculous. The people that call other people posers should take a look at themselves before putting someone down. Honestly, relax.

  • @24-7annihilation5

My take on these things: the whole “metal fans are smarter, metal is basically modern classical music” that’s just probably those pretentious wankers who listen to progressive metal talking rubbish again.
Question, so how far back does all of the fake musicianship (programmed instruments, edited vocals) go?
“Metal is dead” oh it will never die, but none of the newer bands ever seem to get as big as the old ones, but that’s because in metal the influential ones get put on the pedestal, it’s almost like the opposite problem to pop music where an artist is really big at one time then a couple of years later they’re really washed up and almost “irrelevant”.
With the female metal heads one, I was thinking more of “but girls don’t want to listen to gorgasm” sort of thing rather than listening to metal just to hook up with guys.
The touring one I think is also because that’s just tradition. But other than that I’d pretty much agree with everything else you had to say, even though I don’t like metalcore and deathcore I don’t go around saying it’s not metal.
