very nice wink to play this music by an orchestra of nicely dressed women. We must not forget that originally the cancan was danced in the disreputable popular balls of Saturday night. The upper middle class and the bosses went to see the workers dancing freely, like old voyeuristic pigs. And the workers lifted their skirts to shock them and especially turned around to show them their buttocks, to all these bosses and business leaders. It was a way of getting revenge, of despising them and insulting them. It was popular music, played by approximate musicians, in a great chaos where it smelled of tobacco, beer and hot sweat, but also a dance where women could free themselves and do what was forbidden to them, a real liberating dance. Offenbach made a masterpiece of it but we must not forget where this music comes from.
