Yes, please keep up with the old school techniques! Thank you!
Eric you have hit the nail on the head,we need to keep these techniques alive and recorded for the future,3D Printing has changed a lot of ways of doing things but we still need to be aware of other ways of fabrication for models.
Gentleman, let me congratulate you for having one of the most informative channels on the web. Thank you for sharing with the world what a true industrial designer should be. Thank you for showing that 3D printing is not the panacea of production, but it is just a tool, and that talent is in the hands of people like you.
El Borras Productions Thanks for your kind words and thanks for your comment. All the best to you. Feel free to share on social media.
Love the old school techniques❤
I have two 3D printers but still think this is amazingly useful! 1) because the surface finish is really good and 2) because you can bang out so many part with bondo vs printing. Thanks for these super useful videos!
That was a cool hack,on making that bondo flexible by adding the denatured alcohol didn't know that. Looks like I'll try that next time on a plastic bumper cover repair. Because in bodywork with plastics, they say you wanna you use a filler that has more flexibility, on plastic so it doesn't crack. Just learned something new! Thanks Eric!
Awesome, feel free to share on social media what you learned 😊
You have amazing videos. I learn so much from watching you work. Thank you!!
Schön gemacht!
This was really interesting and useful. I thought it was neat that you learned this from modelers. As a modeler I love scratch building and this could help me out. Thanks for sharing this and I am looking forward to the next part.
Cool, thanks!
This is a really useful series. Thanks
Andy Pugh Thanks for your kind works. Feel free to share on social media and tell folks to "like" Glad you enjoyed it. Next week sanding and finishing of the part.
Excellent tutorial! Thank You
Awesome. I’ve been trying to learn costume and prop making for awhile now. Just found out about bondo. I’m slow. To make the flexible pieces. Is it just normal bondo and the type of alcohol? I can’t spell. And where would you get it? I’m assuming it’s not the same as rubbing alcohol right.
normal bondo!LOL, yes any polyester body filler should work
Nice .
A seller on Amazon sent me 2 gallons of cat hair. Or fiberglass reinforced body filler. And I don’t know what to do with it because we don’t use that in car restoration. But I wanted to use it to make things or use it for something instead of just tossing it in the garbage it’s $80 worth of material. However with fiberglass in it I’m sure it’s not going to be as easily moldable for what I see you’re doing except for maybe the 2x4 in the PVC might work. Thanks!
Good luck!
Great video! Loved the extrusion section, do you have any suggestions on ratio of alchohol to bondo mixtures that work well? Also, to add to the extrusion technique, you can glue a small block to the extrusion guide at the edge that touches the glass, this can help you keep the guide vertical with even thickness on the resulting extrusions.
HatchmanPro I really don't know the correct ratio exactly, I would guess it's the 10% range. You are affecting the chemical make up of the resin in effect with the solvent. A bit of trial an error my be required. Good luck! Thanks for the comment, feel free to share on social media if you want!
When making flexible Bondo components, is there a standard ratio of alcohol to Bondo? Can you vary that flexibility at all by changing the ratio, or would variance ruin the cure? How durable are those flexible pieces once cured, like, how much flex does it impact before the piece tears/snaps?
Test it out and try. Parts stay flexible for several hours at least.
Exactly what I needed right now, thank you so so much.
Awesome stuff!
Amazing channel!!! Thanks for very helpful movies. I'm waiting for more! Greetings from Poland
eric any tips for making reusable mold... i herd of gelatin mold but looking for a mould material that reusable and durable... for one of and that can hold up to exothermic temp of fiber glassing
You can also make the pattern of your extruding tool with a 3d printer than use it to make extruded bondo parts. The interest is that you can make very intricate or special shape.
And also preserving old tech while improving it with new one.
Best of both world really. :)
Yes, that might be possible, good thinking, watch for the extrusion lines
@@EricStrebel if you print the tool flat i believe you won't see the extrusion lines.
Yes, you are correct
Do you work to a general guide to the amount of denatured alcohol you use for the flexible parts?
Brendan Lagather I would say a general rule would be about 10%, experiment from there as needed. Thanks for the comment
What's the difference between the polyester Bondo and the Glazing and Spot Putty? What's the spot putty made out of? I can thin it with lacquer thinner. It also cracks when used in, (inappropriate), thick amounts.
GalaxyStranger01 glazing putty is a higher quality filler for scratches and small holes, it has sort of replaced spot putty. Spot putty is a thick lacquer paint. I will address this in next weeks video about sanding and finishing a Model to get it ready for paint.
Love your channel. Sure would like to "hit" the bell but unfortunately none such exists on my tablet!? Sorry.
David Eblen curious...what platform are you using the RUclips app or a browser? usually once you hit subscribe you get the bell and then you can "hit" it...
Try mavcoat release agent. A pint will go long way for u.
Okay, thanks for the tip
Do you have a link to the shellac you use?
This is more than helpfull.
So was that Johnson’s Paste Wax on the glass?
Brendan Lagather YUP! :-) #Bondiester
Eric, wie klebbar Bondo zu Silicon ist?
Not very, nothing much sticks to silicone except silicone
@@EricStrebel danke schön!
How do I make a mirror duplicate of a model if I need one for left and right
If you have digital data, its easy, if all you have is one then you have to sculpt the mirror image. You could scan it and 3D print it, but you will get replication error or be limited by the resolution of the printer.
but you are bind to how big your glass plate is tooo
Dankie
I cast my own parts for modeling & protos. I was told It will be obselete as 3D printing is taking over if I don't get with it, I will be out of a job & blown away in the dust of the past......I cut off a male plug to a 3D printer tossed it to the project manager & told him to" have fun!" & quit, knowing full well these "engineers" couldn't solder their into strip club, which they were a fan of. My boss, who kept me on in spite of HR & other "engineers" telling him valuable resources are being wasted on me, when they could be spending my budget & salary(nominal compared to these ass clowns), to hire new talent & equipment. My salary was paltry compared to the maintenance costs of maintaining these brilliant 3D printers. My boss stood behind me & told them, "Maybe I can get him back in here, if I can convince him that it would be worth his while & teach these lads to solder as well" They threatened lawsuit against me, to which my boss replied,"Yeah, good idea according to your blokes he's dust in the wind & can you stand the humiliation of a knuckledragger bringing your engineers to its knees, yeah let me know how that works out when your competition finds out"
Thank you for these videos even I am learning new stuff, which I thrive on, old world tech
