Chapter 30 excerpt: "Invasion" Mark lay in his bed, thinking about the events of the last few months have made him question a lot of things. He leaned up and looked at his partner, who sat in silence as well, petting his cat, who rubbed against his large muscular body purring. Mark was just about to open his mouth when the lights suddenly turned off. His blood ran cold and he leaped to his feet, slamming the door open and ran into the hallway. His partner Franky followed behind him, reaching into his suit, he retrieved the handgun and held it up, closing the door gently, making sure Sprinkles the cat didn't get caught in the door. After a few minutes, red emergency lights came on, and the hallway was flooded with various members of the D.O.D. ranging from Handlers to Alpha members. Before long a voice shouted out on the intercom: "attention all personnel! This is not a drill! Enemy invasion on ALL sectors is imminent! D.O.D. personnel, report to your battle stations immediately! SWEET TEETH HAVE INFILTRATED ALL SECTORS! I REPEAT, SWEET TEETH HAVE INFILTRATED ALL SECTORS!" The warning kept repeating as Mark gave a blank look at Franky, who simply just grabbed his sunglasses and slid them on his face. Screaming ensued as the various D.O.D. members scrambled for their weapons or to find a place to hide. Mark ran down the hall, heading towards the chow hall, using his small size to his advantage to slip by everyone else. Franky struggled to keep up, shoving people out of the way, Franky called out, "where are you going?" But Mark could barely breathe. He had finally understood what he felt for those Alpha kids... and it was attachment. "To get Zeus!" He called. Franky didn't say anything else. The intercom opened again: "SECTOR 7 IS OFFLINE" "SECTOR 10 CRITICAL" "ATTENTION SECTOR 1 PERSONNEL, SWEET TEETH HAVE BEEN SPOTTED ON THE WEST WING, CURRENTLY MOVING TOWARD CATHERINE'S OFFICES NEAR THE CHOW HALL!" "Mark! We gotta stop this, it's suicide!" Franky called, as the crowd of people thinned out behind them. But Mark picked up speed, he unbuttoned his trench coat, and let his arms rest, sliding daggers into his hands as he bolted toward the chow hall. The sounds of screaming and inhuman screeching began ringing. Men's voices cried for help, children's voices screamed in agony. "MARK!" Franky practically shouted at the top of his lungs, but Mark did not stop. _they_ were in danger. He busted through the eastern doors, and the sight almost was too much to bear. A sea of black creatures, the Sweet Teeth, screeching and howling as they moved like a horde of mindless but bloodthirsty monsters, anyone who lost their footing would be eaten down to the marrow within seconds. This was the largest horde of Sweet Teeth Mark had ever seen. Their numbers were simply impossible to count. They appeared only to be a sea of Teeth and claws, screeching for blood and reaching for various people as they chased the humans down like wolves and lambs. Mark thought quickly and threw a dagger into the sea, killing one instantly, he heard screaming as one of the engineers was slammed around tables, blood splattering all around the chairs as the Sweet Teeth swarmed on the unfortunate man. Mark threw a dagger into his forehead, causing him to go slump and quiet. Mark called out, "Hera, Zeus, Cortez are you in here?!" Franky quickly jumped onto the table and began shooting around, every shot, a Sweet Teeth creature fell, dead on the spot. Flames erupted from behind the counter and Sweet Teeth screeched and flew backwards. Mark ran over and reached behind his back and teased out a grenade, he pressed the button until he heard it beep to engage and he threw it to the left of the counter, he yelled out "Cortez, freeze the counter now!" And almost immediately ice began coating the countertop as Mark leaped over the counter top. He waited as the explosion died down, before sighing. "You kids ok? We gotta move. Hera, you're on point. Cortez, keep our backs covered. Zeus, can you get us all over to the east wing? Some of the D.O.D. members are going to try and hold the Core for the Sector there. Everybody understand?" Then he looked at them in the eyes, and Mark saw them for what they were. Children. Young teenagers born and bred to be tools with no independence on their own. Yet they were scared, they didn't want to die. They didn't sign up for this like Mark or Franky did. Mark leaned in and snapped his fingers as the children freaked out over the sounds of the people dying and the sickening sound of bones crunching as the Sweet Teeth consumed every bit of flesh and bone they could. "Hey-hey! Look at me kids.... lo-look at me! We cant afford to freeze up right now. We gotta move!" A spike of a tail broke through the ice and hissing was all they could hear, aside from Franky shooting. Mark picked up Hera into his arms and reached into his side pocket and retrieved a small compact automatic gun, and began blasting through the ice, the screeching of the Sweet Teeth was confirmation his bullets found purchase. "On three, we go. Ready?" Mark looked back at Zeus and Cortez. Zeus nodded, his brown eyes round as saucers. No older than 15 years. Cortez wiped away his tears and yelled his confirmation, but his lip quivered nonetheless. "1." "2...." "3!" With that, Cortez slapped the ice wall and it melted away as Mark, Zeus, and Cortez sprinted towards Franky, who was holding a large rifle and was holding fire along with a few other D.O.D. members. Upon seeing them, Franky yelled "Let's move!" And they each stopped firing and booked it across the room toward the door they had come in. Hera held out her hands and flames erupted from her tips, instantly roasting anything her flames touched. Mark practically threw her through the door and Franky and the other soldiers peeled away, one by one. There, they held the door line for as long as they could. But the Sweet Teeth closed in with their superior numbers. Once all the members were on the other side, Franky and Mark slammed the doors closed and Cortez froze the doorframe solid. While they weren't safe yet... everyone took a second to breathe..... *end of excerpt*
