Hi, Peter. I’m hi-ing from Bourton On The Water, in the beautiful Cotswolds, Gloucestershire, UK. Whoever assembled that motor, needs a poke in the eye, with a plastic daffodil!

Great video and one I've been waiting for. As for the black build up underneath the crown, from what I've seen and experienced that's caused by oil burning on to it caused by the crown overheating due to the engine being to lean. Also, rotax says the 503 should be completely overhauled at 300hrs or every 5 years. Maybe a good decarbon and new rings and new PTO bearing and seals you'll be good, Id personally just overhaul it if money is no matter.

The Rotax service center owner I spoke to mentioned that the carbon buildup on the under side of the piston is normal for this engine that is mounted inverted. He gave it a clean bill of health after looking at the photos I sent him, with the exception of the outer PTO bearing, which is smooth running but a little noisy. I've ordered the replacement bearing from him, and when it arrives I will install it, decarbon the engine, then reassemble the and run up the engine.

@@challenger2ultralightadventure yeah I don't think I've seen a 2 stroke engine without a little build up on the underside. Cant wait to see her flying. Now to get back to my maintenance on my challenger.

Why I quit using oil injection on my outboards had a hose get plugged up seized up 3 of the 6 cylinders. After speaking to a few guys who race 2 stroke outboards boats they all said everyone removes the oil injection systems just one more thing to go wrong mix the oil in the gas you know the correct oil is always there. I know it's very convenient to just fill a tank with oil and not have to worry about mixing oil. I could not think of anyway to create a system that could monitor that oil was actually mixing at the proper ratio in the fuel.

I will be assessing the oil injection verses premix options very closely. One deciding factor is the known failure rate of this system. I don't have any data on that, so I will have to find that out before I make a final decision. I am leaning towards premix though.

@@challenger2ultralightadventure Thanks for the video. Hope all works out for you. I have several Rotax engines, 503s and 582s. Use oil injection on two and premix on a 503. The oil injection system on the 582s works well, but you must be careful of check the system. Mark the oil level in the tank and check it often. Also, if that pipe was trapped between the manifold and the cylinder, then you would probs have a weak mixture, due to air leaking in.

It was trapped between the ignition coil and the mounting plate. Fortunately just enough oil was passing through to not damage the engine.

Not a pro but definitely ditch the oil injector. I had boat with a 4 cylinder 2 stroke outboard and spun a bearing do to the injector being shit.
