I went the opposite and so did my sister and husband. We were all Conservatives until we were in our 30's in the 90's and we all became more liberal. On the whole we are in the middle but vote Dem as we see what the right is doing and don't like t one bit. I believe that the trend these demographics portend is why the right has become increasingly authoritarian. They realize time is not on their side, so they believe they must destroy democracy if they hope to maintain power and privilege.

“More conservative as you grow older” isn’t so much a rule. It’s more a combination of two trends: “more conservative as your _wealth_ grows” and “society keeps moving, and views that were progressive a decade or three ago _appear_ conservative by comparison with the new line of progressivism, even if they didn’t change.”

Younger generations aren’t following this trend less because, thanks to efforts over the last 50-60 years, we are less wealthy in a real-world sense than equivalent periods of life of previous generations and we have less to look forward to.

I feel like us Gen Zers get a really bad rap. Our stereotype is that we are spoiled, lazy, out of touch, and tech addicted (I really don’t think that last one is in any way unique to our generation). Truth is, while Gen Z is growing up with many advantages older generations didn’t have, we are also stuck with new problems that make a lot of things way harder for us. Climate change is going to get worse in the coming years, and our generation will be responsible for the brunt of dealing with it. College costs and mortgage costs have increased significantly, leaving a ton of us in debt and unable to buy houses, while older generations could often buy houses with high-school graduate jobs within a few years. Work is becoming more and more advanced, so we are left with little choice but to seek higher education, which is way more expensive. Since the assault weapon ban expired in 2004, school shootings have increased exponentially, and now, students have to partake in regular active shooting drills, where we hide in the corners of dark, locked rooms in case someone comes to our school with an assault weapon, ready to massacre us. Conservative policies don’t cut it for what we have to deal with. The Democrats are by no measure perfect, but they have proven themselves worlds better at empathizing with our problems, and they have pushed policies that would greatly help Gen Z, such as student debt relief, so that we don’t have go bankrupt ourselves just to earn living wages, climate change action, so that we don’t spend the future in an unmanageable climate catastrophe, and gun control, so we can be safe from massacres when we’re trying to learn. Republicans, on the other hand, are openly scornful and mocking of our problems. Instead of dealing with the reality of climate change, they opt to deny empirical evidence, and attack world saving and job producing technology like renewable energy, just so that fossil fuel execs can continue to line their pockets with billions they don’t need, at the expense of future generations. Gen Z is the most diverse generation in American history, with 48% of us being non-white, but Republicans role their eyes at the importance of diversity and ending discrimination and inequality. Gen Z suffers from more mental health issues than before, and when we try to seek out ways to deal with it, Republicans actively try to take those solutions away from us. In the face of constant shootings that massacre countless children at goddamn schools, Republicans opt to spit in the faces of victims further by celebrating the weapons that massacre our friends and family, and worsening the problem by loosening restrictions, just to satisfy fringe groups and lobbyists. Basically every problem young people face, Republicans either dismiss it, or go out of their way to make it worse. So yeah, there’s good reason why so few of us vote red.

The question on when demographics catches up to the Republicans has been on the table a long time. It's not difficult to see the handwriting on the wall when the Republicans have won the Executive branch with a minority of the popular vote for the last few election cycles either, and at some tipping point, the won't be able to get enough of the vote to overcome the reality of the demographics. Probably. The fact is that our Constitution and system of elections favors land and minority voters. This is exacerbated by the fact that the difference between rural and urban voters has gotten to the point where it's red vs blue instead of the mix it has historically been. In any case, there is another factor at play here which never gets mentioned in these articles - the fact that the rural population itself is dwindling as industrialization continues to move the place of employment needle. No one seems to be asking the question on how voting districts will fare when the rural/urban distribution gets even further out of whack. Assuming it remains the so called equal representation, what happens when 95% of the population lives in a state's urban areas and massively Blue, how can the Red rural areas maintain their lock on state and federal representation, as is the case in some places already?

Beau had (in my opinion) a much better take on 'people get more conservative as they get older'. He suggested that people actually don't change all that much. But the needle for each generation of young people (baring some terrible disaster) tends to swing toward more progressive. So yea, each generation that gets older is a little to the conservative side of the the one before it. But not because they changed, but because the next generation did. And normally the parties adjust for that along the spectrum - progressives with the newest ideas, democrats with ideas that survived the initial thrash in progressives circles, conservatives with the generations after that. But for whatever reason the mechanism broke recently (tea party which then became trumpism which them became the main body of the GOP). Conservatives set anchor with the oldest ideas and refused to adjust for the incoming 'older Americans'.
So yea, the most extreme conservatives in the country will be super-happy with them and will turn out in greater numbers. And it will look like there's this terrible change coming from the left... but its because they built a damn against the normal flow of ideas and then pointed to the resulting floods as 'the great threat'. Their balance point is so off kilter from where it should be that yea, the stuff on the left seems extreme to them - because they've blocked any of the diluted ideas they were supposed to have integrated over the past decade. Most Americans at this point support the right to abortion. Most Americans (including gun-owners) support reasonable gun-control. Most Americans support reasonable taxes on the rich and attempting to avoid the incoming climate disaster. This includes Americans who would have been in the GOP now - those in their 40s and 50s. But the GOP stance is still pushing the nostalgic GOP views of those in their 70s and 80s as the Only way to go. I had actually joined the young republicans when I was in my 20s (for a little bit) and have generally been apolitical until recently ('all parties are the same'). Now I'm looking down the barrel of the second half of my life, so I Should probably be becoming conservative... but I look at the GOP platform like something between a historical drama and a horror show I'd expect out of a Taliban-run country. Just... no. Ew. No.

Yep, and the more the Republicans succeed at passing legislation and attacking popular culture, the less popular they become. The old Republicans used to know this and were careful not to be too insulting to the other side because they understood they need some of the center and the left in order to win at the ballot box. But the echo chambers of conservative media have dumbed down the current center of mass in the Republican party and they think they can win without appealing to anybody but their most loyal factions, which limits their ability to grow their constituency. A fatal flaw if you want to win a popularity contest.

We have to ask ourselves why do Gen-Z voters support Democrats overwhelmingly? I graduated from a very high ranked and affluent Maryland high school in 2019 and I had a pretty nonpartisan and traditional education. The school focused on STEM and had very high graduation rate (I think it was like 95.6%) Teachers brought up politics but they never endorsed a candidate and tried to be neutral (this was during the 2016 election and most of Trumps presidency). Two years later in 2020 the curriculum at that high school had completely changed and all of a sudden the school district passed bathroom bills, allowed transgender girls to play in girls sports, introduced teaching materials from the 1619 project (which key aspects of the initial argument have been discredited by many prominent historians), etc. This was a sudden radical shift that took place in a period of two years during the Covid-19 Pandemic. And now the school district and the county in general is only getting more radical and partisan. They have banned certain "hateful" symbols such as the Gadsden flag, they have started teaching sex ed to 4th and 5th graders (I started sex ed in 6th grade but I really didn't take the fully detailed course until 9th grade), and the libraries in every elementary and middle school have books like Gender Queer which has graphic descriptions of sex. This would be acceptable for a high school student and you could make the argument that it could be acceptable for an 8th grader to read but these books DO NOT belong in elementary schools. And it's not because it talks about gay sexual intercourse, any book describing graphic sexual intercourse or rape should be limited to at a minimum 8th grade or above. Personally I also support the books being held in a special section that requires parental consent to check out. And this is just the beginning... This isn't just happening in my county in Maryland, it is happening all over the World (mainly in the West)

Just because they were friendly doesn't mean they shared each other's positions...kind of like George Bush and Obama when they became friends...Biden said of Thurmon, “it turns out one of my closest friends ends up being Strom Thurmond, a man whose background and interests, at the time I came, were considerably different than mine". Biden found a way to work with people in the Senate whose views were far different from his own. In his eulogy more than 15 years ago for Thurmond, who later became a Republican, Biden said "I went to the Senate emboldened, angered and outraged at age 29 about the treatment of African-Americans in this country, about everything for a period in his life Strom represented. But then I met the man," Biden said at the time. While their “differences were profound,” he got to know him and “watched him change, oh so subtly." So now you know why Biden gave those two eulogies.
