I'd like to say, a big thanks to you for making this video. my EV-C3 had the issue with the arm popping loose. it is now fixed. Also checked the main filter cap on mine after you brought it up in the video. It's leaking and I'll be replacing that too.
Great video, love your overhead camera setup, the time when we did lots of video repair, were the time when we could make a living out of this trade, keep up the good work
Can't make a living out of repairing stuff these days. Lucky to make a couple hundred bucks a month. Enough to go out for dinner a couple times a month.
Great work , hoping to learn a bit from your videos. I have a Sony ec-v100 that loads the tape, then shuts down. No eject, no play. just cycles the arms around the head when I disconnect and reconnect power. I'm GUESSING mode switch or power supply caps- tape counter is very dim as well.
Wonderful, informative breakdown! I have an ev-c100 hi8 deck I’m trying to revive with similar issues. Finally removed, cleaned and reassembled mode switch on mine. The end result 100% exactly the same loading mechanism behavior as in this video. All parts in place and gears aligned, but loading acts completely disoriented. Anxious to see if you’ll continue on this video!
This is a cliff hanger man. Dude. Gotta fix it. I threw one of these away a few years ago. So silly but 99% of the tapes I get to teansfer are hi8 so useless other than as a rewinder. Best wishes from England Uk
A friend of mine when I handed him the pre-amp pulled on one the capacitors loose from the connections. I see that you replaced all the capacitors in these units. (Lines on screens) so they would need to be replaced for sure. I can either send the pre/amp. By itself or the whole unit. Wasn’t sure of your location on how close you are to me. Shipping into Canada can be expensive. I remember you saying that the value needed to be $20 or under for to prevent a lot of charges. Maybe you can enlighten me on the best way to handle my situation. My preference would be to just repair the preamp if possible. I can reinstall the unit back myself. I realize that it might not solve all the issues with the unit but I’m willing to live with that. I have another unit that I’ve gotten recently that I will be using to due my copying from. (Sony - EVO 510. I know this is getting long but wanted to give you as much information as possible. Kinda of wanted to try to solder the caps myself but need to find a place that will sell them singularly ( don’t need 15 of each). By watching you has given me courage to try. I’m very mechanical and have common sense and always wanted to improve myself. Let me know, where I would have to send it to for I live in Seattle. Thanks Ted
@@12voltvids Understand. Where would I have to send it. Realize that if you just do the caps it would be impossible to see if that fixes it. Problem is the friend broke off one cap so I figure that might as well get all 11 or 12 of them replaced. Plus the preamp is small and would be inexpensive to ship. Not sure what the whole unit would be to ship
You replied to me earlier and I appreciate it. Sony ev-c3 apparently has the capacitors in the preamp need changing (lines in screen and awful volume. Would you need the whole Sony, or could you just replace the capacitors? Believe if I had the correct capacitors, I could probably do it by myself. Really don't know what to do at this time. I have all these 8mm tapes and want to make them digital. Running out of options, and just wondering what the best plan on getting it fixed. Please let me know. I live close to the Seattle area. Could send just the preamp or the whole unit, but everything worked great except the streaky picture and broken volume.
I figured that if I could change out the preamp I would install it back in my unit. Everything else seemed to work (loading, forward& reverse works fine as well as lp so). Willing to send just the preamp for capacitor. Do you happen to know what the shipping charges would be from Seattle (98038) would be. I’ve watched your channel and I know I can install it back. My son in law dad was an electrical engineer and now retired. If problems arise he is there. Thanks for any response
I didn't realise you loved torture so much, at least you got some time out on the motorbike. That sony is a bloody nightmare of problems created by other people.
Well I have 10 days off next week I intend to ride it around as much as I can if the weather is nice after all it's been sleeping for the past 6 months I've only had it out a couple times this year.
EVC3 The mini series. What a mess. Now you have a challenge ahead to get that pos working. I don't blame the design, it is the people who worked of this unit before.
I was adjusting the left roller guide on my vhs player and my tool slipped. Broke on of my heads and i almost cried. The came to a dead stop on the screwdriver against the head slot.
I hate those ribbon connectors as well, hopeless things, always trying to fall apart on you at the slightest chance. I think that thing would have had a big hammer through it by now if it were mine, far to fiddly to work on and those ribbon connectors girrrrrr!
I have one of these bought brand new in the early nineties. Need left the house and is in excellent condition. Now it won't play and the tape is very slow to load and move the loading arms. Is this a lubrication issue or issue with one of the small motors?? Any insight is greatly appreciated.
You want to read the data sheet on that type of ribbon flex cable! They are made for 1 single insertion and are never supposed to be reused, not even once!
What do you want me to do about it. No longer available. Can't change even if I wanted and even when they were available they were bloody expensive. 20 to 30 for a single flex board.
@@12voltvids Sorry if you misunderstood me. I'm not criticising you. I'm just pointing out that the cables are designed to fail during repair attempts. It was the beginning of the end for repairable consumer grade electronics. Then they did away with the socket and soldered the cable straight to the board and the throw away society we have now was born.
@@lstein3372 Thank companies like Walmart for that. They demanded cheaper products so they could flood the market with cheap crap and the race to the bottom began. I do it as a production opertinity so i can make videos of repairs or at least attempted repairs as I make more from the advertising revenue than the actual repair. Fortunately some people are passionate about repairing electronics. Myself i an not one of them. Thanks for this video, my EVC3 works great but is BW for the first 10 min then turns to color and stays color till I leave it unplugged for a while. :)
Cold solder joint making contact once warmed up or like stated above dried out capacitor. You can take a hair dryer and try warming things up to narrow it down.
Put it in a box and mail it to me. Keep in mind that not every unit can be economically fixed. I try but no guarantee that i can fix it because there are many parts like plastic gears that are not available and i don't use 3d printed parts for the sinpme reason that every time i have tried they didn't hold up
I have two of these units both have a jammed tapes. They worked last time I used them as I recall but that was many years ago. I wanted to start digitizing my old analog tapes.I have about 175 Mini dv’s and about 100 8mm tapes. I dislodged the tape on one of the units but don’t know how to eject the 8mm cassette now. Do you still have an interest in fixing two more of these.
Hi, they gave me a sony ev-C3E, it turns on but inserting the cassette sometimes turns but you see everything confused. The back and forth starts but the pins move briefly, the tape often unwinds, often only the left pin turns ..... I tried to clean the rubber pads with isopropyl alcohol but I didn't solve it. What could I do in your opinion? Thank you
No analog video only. There was only 2 stand alone decks that could read digital. GV-D200 and GV-D800 where the only 2 I am aware of. One had the flip up screen and the other didn't.
There isn't one yet. It has been sitting for months and i have not made any more progress. Don't even know if the owner wants to proceed as it is really involved at this point. From what I have learned someone attempted to fix it and make it worse than it originally was so I am chasing not only original problems but problems caused by a botched repair. Have to draw the line sometimes.
Wow you are really patient. I could never fix micro components on these things. Experience repairing this equipment really is a must

Thats the road I wanted to go down initially.
Well done so far, can't wait to see the next episode 👍
I'll get on it again in the next day or so. Suspect that the mode switch isn't being read by the micro.
