  • Rats, cockroaches, mouldy cells, and high levels of violence and self-harm. The Chief Inspector of Prisons says the "filthy" conditions at HMP Bedford are some of the worst he's ever seen.
    (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News...)
    Tonight, we report on another Victorian jail - HMP Wandsworth in south London. It's one of the most overcrowded prisons in England and Wales, and among those the Chief Inspector says should be closed down.

    What's really disturbing about all of this is that British society is that it's instinctively punitive, from school onwards. It's not enough to be unemployed, but we will make you jump through all sorts of hoops just to get money that we know won't sustain you anyway. If you commit a crime, it's not enough to take your liberty, but we are going to humiliate the prisoner as well by not even showing society's decency. Then there was the Postmasters scandal. The instinctive move wasn't curiosity, but punishment before anything else. I think all this making others feel like nothing is a zero sum game. It's nothing more than a cover story for societal and political failure. What are apparently rational people expecting by sending prisoners out homeless?

    • @lovealways729
      @lovealways729 7 месяцев назад +16

      So true, it is extremely punitive and it feels a sense of joy and pride in being punitive... it is really very strange.. as the world knows and understands punishment does not work, but our justice system with the judges wearing those ridiculous wigs or whatever... they so relish in that kind of dynamic.. it is weird!!

    A society needs to be judged on how it keeps prisoners, this is typical of what happens every time the tories get into power. The question “they are prisoners, what does it matter” is such an important one. All the tories care about is to be seen to be being tough on crime without making sure that it’s the right person being convicted. The damage the tories do when they get into power is just shameful and it’s always the same story, no matter who it is that gets into the cabinet or when. Then when the opposition gets into power they have to over spend to put it right. We just go round and round. When will we learn?

If the toilet is overflowing it is most likely the prisoner has plugged it with contraband or is protesting by flooding. It showed in the clip a prisoner laying on the floor who clearly had work boots on covered in paint what you couldnt see was him painting. Officers who mistreat prisoners are suspended under investigation. Prison in real life is not like the movies they are not heroes they are for the most part very bad and violent people.

The problem with civilian staff is that the prisoners are on their best behaviour around them and civvies don't have access to their files so it is very easy for them to be manipulated. When I first started in the job I was very wet behind the ears and took them at face value but after a while you realise why alot of the people are there. The governor can't even read or write. When it was 40 degrees outside in cells in Trinity it was 70 degrees in one cell. The governor sent an illiterate letter telling prisoners to soak their bedsheets in water and sleep in wet sheets to not die in their cells. This was when a young man tried to hang himself in the prison. He was pushed my about 20 staff into the observation cell in K wing 2s landing, and when K wing prisoners asked what happened, a member of staff imitated someone hanging themselves then soiling themselves in an extremely mocking way, and laughed. This is is after a CHILD hung themselves in this prison and died, who was in prison for steeling sweets. The prisoner was in constant observation and before he went in he told the staff that he planned to set fire to himself. Within 30 minutes he did and we watched him melt as the observation cell does not have a mist hole to put out fires. Chunks of his flesh melted from his body and the WHOLE prison saw. Staff not only failed ACCT procedures, failed to search him properly, but were part of this STATE SANCTIONED MURDER. Disgusting prison but what can you expect from this backwards country. The Prison and Probation Ombudsman is refusing to speak to any of us witnesses about what happened, and nor is the local coroner's office who won't even confirm if he died.
