What Ioved about the original Cinderella movie was her perseverance to be kind and caring despite being an abuse victim as well as saving herself in the end by telling the birds to get Bruno to scare the cat away, who had trapped Gus with the key so that she could free herself and try on the slipper. Also in the original, Cinderella defeats the Stepmother by revealing that she had the other slipper when the original one broke, whereas in the third movie, the Prince saves Cinderella by deflecting the magic spell cast by the Stepmother and turning her into a toad.

    Ariel is always gonna have a soft spot in my heart and same goes for most people I know who like Disney princess films. I’m pretty biased towards her. I don’t really like the argument that she gave up her life for a man because it was well-known throughout the first half of the film that she already wanted to explore the human world. The first scene she’s in and “Part of Your World” both make that very apparent. Yes, while she did take interest in Eric, that wasn’t her only motivation. She’s a lovestruck 16 year old and Ursula took advantage of that after Triton destroyed her collection of knickknacks, including her statue of Eric. She gave up an important part of herself to get the life she desperately wanted. Ultimately, Ursula convinced her how men don’t like girls who chat too much anyhow, so doubt and suspicion weren’t as prominent after that whole verse in “Poor Unfortunate Souls.” I do like her development with Eric as well. In the end, he did save her, but that point also helps with the fact that Triton now knows he’s a good human and changed the trajectory of the story at the end. But that’s a whole different topic altogether. That’s just my take on Ariel though.

      Little Mermaid 2: Ariel is a mom, but we see how even she's not a perfect angel. She becomes similarly overprotective of her daughter as much as her dad was.
      Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginning: Prequel. Way before Eric, Ariel doesn't even think about a boyfriend, her goal in that movie is to persuade her dad to unban music. We see she (and even her sisters) was always rebellious and spunky. She sneaks out against her dad's wishes, finds a secret cavern, tells her sisters, and they turn it into a club. Their nanny hates Ariel. She finds the cavern, reports it to the King, and the girls all get in trouble. Despite that, Ariel still goes to unlock Sebastian and his bandmates from jail.
      Little Mermaid show: Even more Eric-free content. Still spunky. She gets captured several times, but she's not a pussy coward. She also is very accepting of others including a deaf mermaid friend.

      Depends if you're contextualizing a real person from a modern or historic perspective. Historically speaking, arranged marriages were primarily used to ensure political security between two parties. If Stephen and Hubert weren't already friends in "Sleeping Beauty," their argument during the "Skumps" song would have probably resulted in a war. If you were a commoner in Merida's kingdom and learned that she caused a conflict in your home by putting her own needs first, you might have a different perspective on the situation. It's the kind of mentality one associates with the French Revolution.
      I don't expect historical fantasy films in general to be historically or even culturally accurate, after all, "Kung Fu Panda" is a well-loved film in China in spite of its Western misconception of dragons in Chinese culture, but it I do expect it to feel like it's set in a different era. Like with Mulan, the main reason she had to disguise herself was because it was illegal for women in her era to go join the army, but these days, women with military careers are more commonplace.

    I disagree with your takes on Jasmine and Ariel.
    Jasmine and Aladdin's chemistry is one of the best in any Disney film. They learn from each other as much as they complete each other. They essentially come from two different worlds and act as foils to each other. Aladdin has all the freedom he wants, but doesn't have a stable life. Jasmine has a stable life, but no freedom. In the end, they find the best of both worlds and enter a new life as equals.
    It's actually quite poetic. Not to mention the fact that Jasmine's feisty and sassy nature really works well with Aladdin's trickster characteristics.
    And I don't get the complaint about Jasmine's outfit. I know it's not something an Arabian princess would wear, but none of the Disney Princesses wear authentic outfits. I mean, why is Elsa in a sexy sequin dress during the Victorian era? Why is Aurora exposing her hair and feet during the middle ages? Why is Pocahontas wearing a minidress?
    Jasmine was designed to resemble contemporary teenage girls. And teenage girls do often wear a crop top, depending on the climate.
    And Ariel didn't "give up her voice for a man." She gave up her voice to desperately get away from her borderline abusive father so she could finally have a chance to live on the surface. Eric was just the cherry on top, and even then, she was genuinely interested in getting to know him.

    • @OpticalSorcerer
      @OpticalSorcerer 5 месяцев назад +4

      The outfit debacle is something I've seen frequently brought up for Jasmine and Pocahontas. The European girls get less criticism (though I have seen some) because their locations are "generic European"--a common location for fantast stories in any medium--whereas the POC princesses are often from specific locations, so people go harder on them. I recall someone daying they hated Jasmine's outfit not just for cultural inaccuracy (I think they were Middle Eastern), but because they said in the heat, she'd get a terrible sunburn like that.
      Jasmine is definitely an underrated Disney princess because she's the only one who the story doesn't revolve around. After watching therapists react to "Aladdin," I am less impressed with Aladdin since he did lie to her until the end; I think it would've been (slightly) better if he just lied to the sultan and told Jasmine the truth.
      And so many people misunderstand Ariel; IDK how that keeps happening when "Part of Your World" happened BEFORE she met Eric.

    • @vetarlittorf1807

      @@OpticalSorcerer "she'd get a terrible sunburn like that." Only if she falls asleep outside. But there's a reason why most Arabs have brown skin and thick hair and eyebrows. On top of that, Jasmine doesn't go outside that much because she's confined to her palace. So it wouldn't matter either way.
      About Aladdin's lie, that is a flaw in the character, not the writing. When Jasmine reveals to him that she's a princess, he is overwhelmed with shame because he doesn't think a street rat like him is worthy of her affection. So naturally, when he becomes a prince, his self-esteem becomes dependent on his newfound wealth and power and more importantly, he thinks those are the only things that give him the chance of winning Jasmine's heart. But when he does win her heart, he thinks he is even less worthy of her affection than before because he lied to her.

      @OpticalSorcerer 5 месяцев назад

      @@vetarlittorf1807 It doesn't take long to get a sunburn, to be fair, and Jasmine hasn't been outside the palace walls, so it's entirely possible that being outside on the grounds is the closest she has to being free (of course, she may wear less revealing outfits, such as the purple one from right before Aladdin tries to tell her the truth).
      Not really saying it's a writing issue, just that I don't like that character flaw; I would've preferred if he at least tried to tell her earlier, but perhaps there was always an interruption or Jafar manipulated events to make there never be a moment where he can tell her--or simply bring up the fact that if they knew HOW he got this far (Genie), he'd be concerned about them using his powers for bad things.

      @@OpticalSorcerer Well the European princesses still have specific settings yet it's only considered bad when Aladdin blended multiple cultures. But Little Mermaid, Cinderella (France), Sleeping Beauty (France), Tangled (Germany), and even more specific ones like Pinocchio and Beauty and the Beast blended aspects of different cultures in there. Never do I see whining that Pinocchio is wearing lederhosen in Italy. Never do I see complaining about how Disney handles Tangled. Tangled being in Germany is quite clear especially with the names, but a lot of people think it's Italy, France, Hungary, and Poland. Even Disney can't make up its mind, they put Corona in France's spot in one episode of the cartoon, the book Disney Princess Journey Through History claims it's "Central Europe", and notice how despite all the German names (the old kind was called Herz Der Sonne, the most obviously German of all the German names in the franchise), Disney really doesn't want to admit it's Germany but they're willing to outwardly call Snow White German for some reason....

I don't necessarily trust the "Journey Through History Book" simply because each person can have a different opinion (unless it's a writer's note saying where they planned the film to be set in). For instance, "The Little Mermaid" was inspired by the Mediterranean, but last year's graphic novel specifically said it was set in Denmark. And I recall hearing that Mary Costa claimed Disney wanted them to use British accents to exhibit "Sleeping Beauty" took place in England, though I'd have to double check that.

    The criterias for a Disney Princess character to officially count as part of their lineup is as followed;
    1. Has to have a prominent role or the protagonist in their first feature film
    2. Be human or approximately human-like (thanks Ariel)
    3. Be either;
    - Born into royalty or respected as one in a tribe
    - Marry into royalty, or...
    - Completed a heroic act, cause some cultures treated heroes like royalty
    4. Film needs to be moderately successful in terms of box office (not official, but it is a trend for all of the films in that lineup)
    While the word "Princess" is mainly involving royalty, but in some cultures people respected family members of trible leaders as their equivalent of royalty. It is not all pretty dresses with tiaras. The Disney Princess lineup is quite broad with cultures as an excuse for getting parents to buy dresses for their little girls to dress up to make some good bucks.
    Some good things to note. Aurore from _Sleeping Beauty_ counts as a princess even though she practically slept for a good chunk of the film cause she fits in all 4 criterias. Merida is part of the Disney Princess lineup since _Brave_ is a Disney Pixar film, making her the only Pixar Princess. Pocahontas, Moana and the recently added 13th Princess - Raya from _Raya and The Last Dragon_ are all daughters of chiefs which they all fit the "respected as one in a tribe". Yes, this lineup does get updated often and people seem to forgot about Raya existing.
    From what we have seen, Asha from _Wish_ is on the list to "likely" become the 14th Princess in the lineup. While Asha isn't born into royalty or a tribe, I have a feeling that she may end up being part of the lineup due to her heroic act of standing up against the king and changing the community in the kingdom. So she is likely to be just like Mulan where it's the "heroic act treating the hero like royalty". Yes, I know Mulan is not a traditional princess as you say, but she does do a very "heroic act" that makes her stand out in her community. I kinda like that not all princesses are all just girls with dresses that act as being the damsel in distress. It shows off great inspiring messages for the little girls in dresses that watch films about princesses.
    Now you're probably wondering, what about Elsa, Anna, Mirabel, and... whoever that princess in the red dress is? First thing to note, that princess in the red dress is Elena from the TV film _Elena and the Secret of Avalor_ and the _Elena of Avalor_ series. While these do appear on Disney+ and in parks, they're considered Honorary Princesses. Associated with the brand, but not actually part of the lineup, and you can tell if you look at the criterias again. Elsa and Anna's debut film Frozen was overwhelmingly successful, but both of them do end up being Queens, not Princesses. Mirabel's case is a bit odd, but she isn't a princess because the film was overwhelmingly successful, but also the Madrigals are more like a family with special powers rather than a tribe or royalty. The villagers just treated them like a normal really well bonded neighbours. Oh, what about Elena? Well, she debut in a TV film, not a feature film, and she ends up being a queen instead of a princess. Her being forgetable does kinda raise questions of how successful her TV series ended up being if she is still around at parks.

      Since the Disney Princess thing has been going since 1999 (my birth year), there's bound to be a few females that were part of the lineup that got departed off the lineup and are now called Former Princesses.
      - Tinker Bell from _Peter Pan_ . Don't ask me what the logic was with adding a tritagonist in the lineup, cause she ended up getting removed in the mid-2000s when the Disney Fairies franchise was born, which let's be honest... it exists.
      - Esmeralda from _The Hunchback of Notre Dame_ . She was featured for a fair bit until 2008. She is a deuteragonist (secondary character). But that wasn't the main thing that got her off the lineup, it is actually the film and her appearance that got rid of her. FIrst of all, the film is incredibly dark, but also her outfit is suggestive which would probably raise parents eyebrows when little girls wear that outfit. Plus her age and appearance is leaning towards more adult rather than late teens.
      - Jane from _Tarzan_ . Bye the way, these 3 were added in 1999 but got removed in the 2000s. While she is also a deuteragonist, she is not really a princess to say. But what made her get off it is the fact that she is the protagonist in the film's sequel _Tarzan and Jane_ . My guess is that Disney didn't exactly know what sort of rules the Princess lineup has to be at its inception, but they eventually got it stuck in once Tiana from _The Princess and The Frog_ got added. With Jane being a protagonist in the sequel and not her debut, she isn't in that lineup. She didn't survived that long in the lineup. She practically disappeared in 2002.
      And of course, we have almost Princesses. They were almost going to be part of the lineup but never made it in for some logical reason.
      - Vanellope from _Wreck-It Ralph_ . Despite being seen with Disney Princesses and was considered to be one, there's definitely some gaps in her coding that prevented her from being part of the lineup. It is obvious, she does not have a prominent protagonist role in her debut. She's a deuteragonist (secondary character) in a film that is titled after her new best friend. So she literally just became a princess once again the first film and broke into a website in the second film. Whoever in Disney thought that Vanellope was a great candidate for the Princess lineup clearly had a glitch in their system.
      - Alice from _Alice In Wonderland_ . She is the main protagonist in the film, and was one of the characters that were considered early on in its inception, but never made it in when Disney finalised the criteria. And Alice fits absolutely none of those criterias. Also, it doesn't help that she's practically a little girl herself. When it comes to the Princesses in their lineup, their ages are usually late teens like 14, 16 or 18 which is why a lot of them look young. Alice looks more like 12 which wouldn't fit well.
      - Megara from _Hercules_ . Another tritagonist. Megara was thought by many that would see her fit well in the Princesses lineup, but much like Jane... she appeared less frequent with the other princesses to the point that she practically disappeared. While we don't exactly know why she disappeared all of a sudden, the likely reasons is that she is very sensual like Esmeralda and she never became a princess since she never married Hercules.
      - And finally, Kida from _Atlantis: The Lost Empire_ . The princess/queen of an underrated gem that was flopped REAL hard when the film was released. Out of all of the almost Princesses, Disney REALLY wanted Kida to be part of it since they wanted to show more diversity in princess themes, but the problem is that Kida just blends in rather than standing out compare to the other princesses. They tried redesigning her to make her look modern with a similar style to Pocahontas in 2013, but no matter how much Disney tries, Kida does not fit at all in the lineup in terms of appearance. I think the logical reason why Kida is REALLY tricky to add into the lineup is primarily due to her film failing which people are now seeing it as being underrated, but also her age is like 1,600 or something. Her white hair makes her look like an old queen with a very youthful appearance.
      And that's all there is about Disney Princesses.

      I think it's less the lack of a romantic interest and more the historical context. Arranged marriages were primarily to ensure political security between two parties. Take "Sleeping Beauty," for example, if Stephan and Hubert weren't already friends their argument in the "Skumps" song would have resulted in a war, so Aurora's engament to Phillip could be interpreted as a means of keeping the peace. Phillip can casually brush off the engagement because he's already aware of their friendship, Aurora, on the other hand, didn't even know that she was a princess. If you were a commoner in Merida's kingdom and learned that she brought a conflict to your home to fulfill her own needs, you'd likely would have a different opinion. An ideology often prescribed to the French Revolution.
      Generally, I don't expect historical fantasies to be all that accurate on any level, after all, "Kung Fu Panda" is a beloved film in China in spite of the Western misconception of Chinese dragons, but it does still have to evoke a sense that the characters are from a different timeline. Like how Mulan had to disguise herself because it was illegal for women to fight in the war, but women with military careers are more commonplace these days.

    I agree with a lot of this. My opinions mainly differ with just a few:
    CINDERELLA: I would actually put her much higher on the list. She had gone through a lot (her mom died, her father remarried a monster then HE died leaving her to be raised by the monster and her monstrous daughters, the aforementioned monstrous woman essentially makes her a slave) but despite it all, she still gets up in the morning and finds something to give her a reason to smile. She went out and tried to make a dream come true, but when that dream was LITERALLY and SAVAGELY torn away from her, only then did she get help from an outside source. In the end, she even saved herself by keeping the other glass slipper. For me, Cinderella is S Tier. ❤
    TIANA: I would put her above Rapunzel. Neither went out looking for love, but both found it in the course of a day with two men that was essentially kindhearted scoundrels. The difference is, Rapunzel had a dream to see the lights while Tiana had a dream to own a restaurant. Both dreams were goals to achieve, but Tiana spent all of her adult life trying to reach hers while Rapunzel just dreamed about it. Tiana played an active part in fulfilling her wish, Rapunzel didn't. Tiana made her dream come true, not by her husband bankrolling her funds, but by him standing at her side. That was HER money that she earned to pay for the building, not his. She just need him (and Lewis) to be there to back up the fact that a woman of her "background" did in fact have what it took to own that rundown building. SHE did that! She rescued herself AND him, because it was her kiss that turned them from frogs to human. Granted, it only worked because the kiss was to seal their wedding vows, so I guess they technically saved each other, but I'm still going to give her credit for that. And to me, her love story was as convincing as Rapunzel's, but Tiana was the more interesting princess. ❤

    Several wrong things:
    Ariel wasn't only into Eric. She was interested in land BEFORE Eric. Keira Knightley is NOT a good source on "feminism".
    Naveen changed mostly of his own free will. Also the Naveen that wanted Lottie was NOT NAVEEN, you need to rewatch the movie because that was his butler in disguise. Remember, the Shadow Man turned the butler into Naveen and it was the butler who only wanted money. Naveen thought he was a Romeo, yes, but he ultimately had a good heart and when push come to shove he didn't care what would benefit him. Tiana was not the only thing that changed him, she was part of his journey.
    Cinderella was again strong, strength doesn't mean violence and verbally abusing people. Ignoring the constant victim blaming that even some abused people I've seen use on her, she did have shades of being stronger than she seems in the first one with her going "that clock! Get up you say!", calling out Lucifer several times, helping the mice when they got stuck in traps or were being chased by Lucifer, and got her dog and the birds to unlock the door because she knew it was NOT POSSIBLE to open it herself. It may not have been super obvious and more subtle in the first one but if you want to see her strength become more obvious, you need to watch the sequels. Also Cinderella is not a "damsel in distress', that term is often misused. A damsel is actually in danger, is actually being harmed. I.E. kidnapped, r*ped, in danger of death. Not a girl who is being bossed around, you defended Cindy but then pulled the "damsel" claim. Snow White is actually in danger. She's more of a damsel (again not her fault she's abused too). Aurora WAS a damsel for about 2 minutes. Merryweather changed the spell so she specifically WOULDN'T die. Again simply being under a spell isn't a "damsel" moment. In fact most of the princesses people don't call damsels are more damsels because they actually do get in danger. Rapunzel? Kidnapped, then almost drowns, then actually tied up as Gothel tries to drag her away. Belle? Attacked by wolves, then in Enchanted Christmas she almost drowns. Merida? At one point she needs to be helped by her mom when the bear overpowers her. Pocahontas? In the sequel she gets locked in the dungeon and then Ratcliffe tries to stab her.
    And all the non-princess girls who never get accused of being damsels even though again they often get in danger. Wendy? First half is Tink and the mermaids trying to murder her. Second is getting taken hostage by Hook. Alice? Almost gets her head cut off. Jane Porter? She gets in danger in the movie but also gets kidnapped a lot in the cartoon. Olivia from Great Mouse Detective? Kidnapped multiple times. Tiger Lily? Also kidnapped. Esmeralda? The whole movie has her being chased by a guy who wants to force himself on her and then tries to murder her when she rejects him. No "weak damsel such bad role model" complaints there, gee I wonder why?
    So my opinion on your list is, it's fine except you got some facts wrong and you use the "girls who mainly want romance or don't get physically violent to prove they are strong are weak damsels and bland and boring" feminism, the fake feminism. All girls are valid. So a woman wants love or needs help? So what? No less valid than a warrior soldier woman. Warrior soldier women aren't the only woman that's worth anything and ironically the feminists who believe this want women to be more masculine, even though they criticize men.

      exactly snow white took shelter in the dwarves cottage, all because her own stepmother wants to kill her, than she got protected by the dwarves until they went to work in the mines, than the queen disguises herself as a witch gave her an apple not knowing that an act of true love's first kiss will awaken her and than aurora even though she was cursed didn't notice or know Philip until she was saved by true love's kiss.

    I think you did Auora dirty here. Sleeping Beauty is a high-context cultural film where a lot of the events make sense knowing the honor system of the time, the idea of duty before personal desire, and the fact that a ton of the budget was put into one of the most visually stunning films of all time so time became an issue. You also are judging her based on the performance of a film with traditional classic role models released during a time of great social upheval with political agendas being pushed that have had seriously negative long-term effects on modern relationships.

    One thing I found hilarious about you disqualifying Mulan is that Tinker Bell, Alice (in wonderland), and Esmeralda were all at one point considered part of the Disney Princess brand. However Tink eventually got her own series (which has since fizzled out). Alice was axed after the Live action remakes started to get popular. And Esmeralda... Well... That's a can of worms best left alone...

      @justkittensbeingkittens5892 I think they should have just made the series into an episodic monster of the week show like they did with Aladdin and Hercules. I personally wish there were more straightforward shows like that.
