Louie in his prime! All that and he was a fine composer as well. And talk about endurance! Above all, a humble gentleman with a beautiful, joyous spirit!

Many great jazz drummers from the past & present exist but I believe Louis Bellson was truly the only serious competition to Buddy Rich. An innovator of the double bass drum & master of parradiddles on bass drums with just a single foot pedal on each bass drum NOT the single pedal w/two mallets they use often today. His confidence, control, orginality & mastery was incredible. Even playing with FOUR sticks!! Even Buddy Rich respected him and Buddy was not one to compliment very often.
Also let's not forget that Belson and Buddy Rich were basically very close friends. Belson on occasion would fill-in for Buddy Rich I'm gigs that buddy Rich could not play for.
No ofence to those who are fans of Buddy but I was never impressed by him. My al time favourite is master Louis Bellson. I was mesmerized when I frist heard in in those TV series with Oscar Peterson. He was a genius at accompanying Oscar... RIP Louis Bellson
Hitting as many drums as possible with not much rhythmic variety is not as impressive as playing a four piece kit but playing so many different rhythms and all the while never losing the beat or the tempo. That to me is the big difference between Bellson and Rich. The second approach is also way more musical and less about showing off. When I see Bellson it is more like a display of look at me as with Rich it is more of an expression of musical prowess and emotion and musicality.
One of the best drum solos I've ever heard. Bravo!
Bellson and rich. My two favorite drummers ever.

For me Louis Bellson wins.
I have two heros... Louis Bellson and Dave Weckl. Different styles, I know but they are masters.
RIP Louis
To say that buddy Rich Just respected Louis Belllson Is an understatement.
He's really the "bridge" between the classic "jazz" drum soloist, and the modern arena-rock drum soloist. :)

Shhhh, camera con not keep up with him, his hands move so fast it just blurs em
wow can even reach to all the cymbals he has lol?? :p ..... but yeah he is an amazing player!!
This video at least to me proves that Belson was just as fast as Buddy Rich and had just as good of technique.
