How do I get SOLAR WIRES THROUGH my VAN ROOF? | Van Build #10

  • I quickly install a cable entry gland to get my solar wiring from the outside to the inside of my van. I first drill a hole, then treat the edges and then, after sticking through the cables, I glue the gland on top. It's that simple!
    What I used this episode:
    Tools
    Cordless Drill
    Drill
    Various drill heads
    File
    Paint brush
    Materials
    Cable entry gland
    SikaFlex 221
    20m weather-resistant solar cables

    ------------------------- About ----------------------------
I've been living in my 1979 Mercedes-Benz James Cook Campervan for two years now. I loved that van, but it was itching me to do my own conversion; alone and without any experience. I sold my old van and started my very own van conversion!
In this Van Build Series, I will take you along my journey of building my own home on wheels. I will do everything from insulation, cladding, and furniture to the water and electric system. And all that while I'm learning how to do these things on the way. I will go through many hours of work, frustrating moments and defeats in order to achieve the experience of creating things with my own hands. I hope you're enjoying this series and maybe you can even learn something from my ideas & mistakes. - Lenja

Hey everyone! This week's episode is a bit shorter than usual, sorry for that! I'm still struggling to find time to edit since I'm still working on my bachelor thesis... But I thought getting a short episode out there is better than none! Hope you enjoy it anyway! 😊

Cool, thanks for this - amazing what you can find when you search for "van solar wire roof". I'm like you in that I spent 13 years in a commercial RV and wanted to make my own. On Monday, I'm heading on a 870 mile tour to pick up cheap stuff that I found on Ebay!
For anyone interested, that box thing that passes the wires from the roof can be found under "Roof wire entry gland box".

You can use a hole saw. Cheaper and easier to drill than large drill bit and claims to make hole on wood and metal. Or get a hole punch but that gets expensive. Plastic grommet is a good option. Using rubber can decay overtime and eventually start allowing wires to rub on sharp edges.

  • @PMacleod3000

Nicely done Lenja, There is a waterproof adhesive and sealant called CT1 Google it. It's far better for sticking caps on the roof it's bonds so water can't get in. I made a note about it from watching another van life channel so I can't take credit. You also should've used a rubber gromit to go around the hole, as over time the wire moving slightly will wear. Keep the videos coming. Oh yeah, wear googles when drilling metal, no fun with metal in your eyes. I know. I have two eye patches lol.

Does it make a difference drilling from the bottom or from the top?

  • @Russellbeta
    @Russellbeta 4 года назад +7

PLEASE use goggles when drilling, it's even more risky like that above your head but even when you're drilling a small hole under yourself you should wear glasses. I learned that the hard way and you would too if bits of metal get stuck in your eye and it gets infected.
Some more tips that might help:
If you have to drill a big hole, let's say 15mm, start with a small drill bit and work your way up, in this case 5mm>10mm>15mm or something like that is usually better. It will drill easier, not catch as much and be more likely to wind up at the center you started at.
You might want to brush the little bits of metal from drilling off your roof if you haven't already or they will start to rust and that can actually get through the paint.
Clean surfaces with paint thinner or white spirit or acetone before gluing them but give them a very light sand first because it will make for a better bond. It might be ok as it is but if the seal ever fails you'll know what to do. I don't know what glue you used but polyurethane-mastic is great for it(I used to use it at a factory that relied on it for sealing their custom fun fair trailers) and I wouldn't worry about it oozing out the sides a bit because in this case waterproof is more important than pretty.
Nice to see the progress, best of luck and be safe :)

@@cagedavis9334 I'd hardly call the place I went to in eastern europe an A&E 😅The doctor had an incandescent bulb with a pulley string, a magnifying glass on an arm and *i kid you not* a SEWING NEEDLE. "hold still" she said and I never sat so still in my life, I just really wanted it out because it was all infected.
I hear in the west they usually use a magnet nowadays.
