Excellent lesson, Jay! After 20+ years of playing and being pretty darn decent, I jammed with my friend who is an actual professional guitarist, and I noticed how loose his grip was. My grip, by contrast, came from my teacher who was obsessed with black metal, and it was stiff as hell. I started experimenting with different levels of grip looseness, and different angles of attack, and noticing how everyone picks differently but everyone who sounds good has to be able to *keep it loose*. Suddenly my playing took a massive leap forward. Now I'd say what's going on with my picking hand is way more involved and nuanced than what's going on with my fretting hand, and I'm *constantly* changing my picking as I'm playing. It's only been a few years since this change in my playing, but it's all come together and I finally sound like I've been playing for 20+ years!
It’s crazy how many ways we all hold the pick ain’t it, mine spins sideways and I use one of the sholders instead of the tip your supposed to. 🤘🏽just keep learning 🤘🏽 Never stop playing
This was so needed, thanks so much!!! Quality and presentation were excellent ! I have hundreds of picks in size, material, texture and thickness never completely satisfied with any of them, they all seem to twist and shift in fingers or drop, plus I don't like the feel of textured picks, until I discovered Dunlop Gel picks, they always stay in place no matter the grip pressure and great response time too, Billy Gibbons uses them. Highly Recomended
I was always wondering everything you were saying. I love your playing...your playing is so heart felt so real so true. Your such a inspiration to those who inspire to play with feeling and sincerity. I wish we were close friends that lived close to each other. Blessings bro...
Ironically, you have to be loose to attack with ‘aggression’. You have to stay loose to play fast. Great pointers. Love the detail on the positioning of the finger with the pick. Fluidly using all those techniques is not easy, and it’s the attention to how it works for you that helps you master them. My nail on my ring finger has a shape that catches when I Hybrid/Finger pick. When I tuck, I need to move the pick back under my ring finger, so I have my pointer and middle free. If you use a thinner pick, you can use the shoulder of the pick when you are NOT strumming. Always experimenting with my pick preference? Still adding and refining?
Thanks. Helpful lesson, as always :) Have you ever tried TUSQ picks? I discovered how much they improved my sound - first on my newly bought all solid body acoustic guitar. Then I started to use them on my strat and tele and to me, they add clarity and life to sound. I wonder if anyone here thinks the same?
One more question J. How hard do you pick/strum? I cant seem to be consistent, and i often wonder do i pick it too soft. I need compression to even out my picking in long tremolo picked lines
Are you resting the pic on the side of your index finger, or is the surface of the pic resting on the meat of your index finger, and is it the same for strumming and single notes?
Excellent lesson, Jay!

My favourite series!! Love it jay, keep it up!
Ah yes, the secrets of the Chet Atkins of Funk! Jay, your right hand technique is really something else. Thanks for sharing your wisdom!
Chet Atkins of Funk. I'll take that comment any day of the week :)

Really appreciate it :)
Fantastic!!!
This video should have been 60fps with all that fast strumming :-)
Thanks Jay. Definitely something to work on. Would love to be able to go between the pick and finger picking as usually the pick ends up in my mouth.
Hope it works out for you!

Smile always smile!!! even JlJ’s stank face on a 5 step bend he’ll still be smiling!!
I'd even smile after breaking a string on that 5 step bend too :)
Very very interesting (as usual), Thank you Jay! Mordi

Actually, I have a pack around somewhere! I should find it and definitely give it a try :)
How do you deal with the pick moving around in your fingers when you strum? Thx for this vid btw
I'd say try a thinner pick or a smaller one really and just work your way up from there tbh
Cool drill.
What kind of strings and size are you using on the tele? Thanks for the video
I use the Balanced 10 Set by Stringjoy

That is a beautiful guitar
Thanks!
Jay, what kind of bridge do you have installed? My highway 1 tele is having intonation issues
It's is the Mastery Jazzmaster style bridge. It is the best!
Sir J, what pick gauge and/brand do you use? .88/ 1 / 1.25? Thanks
My JLJ Branded picks are Steve Clayton Acetal .80mm. I also use those Dunlop Tortex .73mm picks too.
Hi Jay! What kind of Supro do you play in your video? Thank you.
It's the Keeley Custom 12
How can we play like Jay when he never drops the details on those knobs?
They are 250k Bournes pots with *61 Reissue SG knobs on them :)
If you take only one thing from this video, “Keep it loose” should be that thing.
Your playing sounds like you have the playback on double speed. Very cartoonish.
