    "From A to backward R"
    As a Russian, I was surprised to hear that line, considering how few people will get it. For those of you wondering, the backward R is Я ("ja"), which is the last letter of Russian alphabet.

      That’s an old soviet joke. But here’s how the original one goes: Soviet union has 3 channels. When the news broadcast comes, the bored man watching tv switches to the 2nd channel to find something interesting; the same boring news is on that channel. Then he switches to the 3rd channel, it’s the same thing. Then he switches to a fourth channel with a KGB officer saying: “Hey, you better stop switching channels and watch your news.”

      The Russian cartoons are full of human emotion, at least the Soviet ones were. Often a little too dark for kids. Didn't like them as a kid. Exceptions are the Russian Vinnie the Pooh, Nu Pogodi, etc.

    • @NeuroticPixieSlasher
      @NeuroticPixieSlasher 8 лет назад +21

      Eh, I wouldn't say so. Sure, the most famous (and most memorable) animations are the ones that adults can appreciate more (like Bardin's or Norstein's works), but there were plenty of cartoons for children. A lot of them just aren't as memorable for that very reason. Adults can relate to "Vovka v Tridevyatom Tsarstve", for instance, because his "Eh, it's fine as it is!" approach is something we see every day in the work place (I actually saw a girl with one of the Vasilisas tattooed on her arm yesterday). But cartoons about bogatyrs, Seraya Sheyka, the snowman who became Santa's assistant, "Shaybu! Shaybu!", the wolf and the fox who went fishing - these are all very kid-friendly. Personally, I don't see any adult appeal in them. And that, I think, is what made them forgettable.

    Shoe and Shoeless shows the solidarity that is cooperation among the working class. While both unique, and both have a function, they form unity under one to add value that can be given elsewhere (like putting them to your feet). Even though the shoeless is the minority with less mass, he is treated as equal for the end goal of utopia and a better world for the people.

      When I think of Africa I think of poverty and very poor farming soil. With many starving children asking for a simple sip of water to quench their thirst in a desert like environment. I imagine myself in the far future sending a can of water to an African village. Sadly because they breed like rabbits the water will not be enough for an entire village. Fighting over the 1 can of water, maybe even killing each other. Not even that is the end, there are diseases like crazy. Vaccines are probably not a thing, unless a charity comes in. In the end, I think the cake was pretty good.

      Nonsense you are saying.
      There are plenty of western cartoons that we knew in Soviet Union. And we had plenty of European and American films shown on TV or film Theaters. In fact Soviets knew allot more foreign films then you do!
      Yes, we, Russian did see Star Wars back in 80's. And we DID have our own first 3D film with red/blue glasses, which was actually pretty cool for 80's. I wish I could find it.
      About someone being sent to Siberia- you are confusing it with 1920's-1940's - Stalin's Era. But he mostly sent real criminals there or accused enemy of the nation. After death of Stalin in 1950's, nobody was sent to Siberian jail, except for serial killers. Gulag was gone in mid 50's.
      Jeez, you Americans know NOTHING at all about Soviet Russia, yet you try to pass as experts. Very lame.

      What I find interesting is how they brought in some western arcade games and then had their engineers reverse engineer them to make ones better suited to communist ideals. Heck, there's still some of those that survive today, but it's getting harder to maintain them due to the secrecy that was involved for their construction.
