"From A to backward R" As a Russian, I was surprised to hear that line, considering how few people will get it. For those of you wondering, the backward R is Я ("ja"), which is the last letter of Russian alphabet.
In Russia there's only two channels, the first one is Soviet propaganda, and the second one is your KGB officer telling you to switch back to the first one.
That’s an old soviet joke. But here’s how the original one goes: Soviet union has 3 channels. When the news broadcast comes, the bored man watching tv switches to the 2nd channel to find something interesting; the same boring news is on that channel. Then he switches to the 3rd channel, it’s the same thing. Then he switches to a fourth channel with a KGB officer saying: “Hey, you better stop switching channels and watch your news.”
I don't remember the show. I don't remember a lot of things. Spent most of my childhood drunk, wrestling bears. Don't judge me. How else could I get a unicycle?
No, the joke was a parody of a legendary piece of Russian animation called "Hedgehog in the fog". It's a shame it's not featured in this compilation - but it's understandable
The Russian cartoons are full of human emotion, at least the Soviet ones were. Often a little too dark for kids. Didn't like them as a kid. Exceptions are the Russian Vinnie the Pooh, Nu Pogodi, etc.
Eh, I wouldn't say so. Sure, the most famous (and most memorable) animations are the ones that adults can appreciate more (like Bardin's or Norstein's works), but there were plenty of cartoons for children. A lot of them just aren't as memorable for that very reason. Adults can relate to "Vovka v Tridevyatom Tsarstve", for instance, because his "Eh, it's fine as it is!" approach is something we see every day in the work place (I actually saw a girl with one of the Vasilisas tattooed on her arm yesterday). But cartoons about bogatyrs, Seraya Sheyka, the snowman who became Santa's assistant, "Shaybu! Shaybu!", the wolf and the fox who went fishing - these are all very kid-friendly. Personally, I don't see any adult appeal in them. And that, I think, is what made them forgettable.
